The H∞ control has been one of the important robust control approaches since the 1980s. This book extends the area to nonlinear stochastic H2/H∞ control, and studies more complex and practically useful mixed H2/H∞ controller synthesis rather than the pure H∞ control. Different from the commonly used convex optimization method, this book applies the Nash game approach to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the mixed H2/H∞ control. Researchers will benefit from our detailed exposition of the stochastic mixed H2/H∞ control theory, while practitioners can apply our efficient algorithms to address their practical problems.
This book provides the reader with a comprehensive introduction to functional analysis. Topics include normed linear and Hilbert spaces, the Hahn-Banach theorem, the closed graph theorem, the open mapping theorem, linear operator theory, the spectral theory, and a brief introduction to the Lebesgue measure. Applications in optimal control theory, variational problems, wavelet analysis and dynamical systems are also highlighted. ‘A First Course in Functional Analysis’ will serve as a ready reference to students not only of mathematics, but also of allied subjects in applied mathematics, physics, statistics and engineering.
Gravity models describe, and hence help predict, spatial flows of commuters, air-travelers, migrants, commodities and even messages. They are one of the oldest and most widely used of all social science models. This book presents an up-to-date, consistent and unified approach to the theory, methods and application of the gravity model - which spans from the axiomatic foundations of such models all the way to practical hints for their use. "I have found no better general method for use in applied research dealing with spatial interaction... It is against this background that the present book by Sen and Smith is most welcomed." Walter Isard
An up-to-date, rigorous, and lucid treatment of the theory, methods, and applications of regression analysis, and thus ideally suited for those interested in the theory as well as those whose interests lie primarily with applications. It is further enhanced through real-life examples drawn from many disciplines, showing the difficulties typically encountered in the practice of regression analysis. Consequently, this book provides a sound foundation in the theory of this important subject.

Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous (systematic) disease that exhibits high levels of robustness against various therapeutic interventions. Due to the complex, heterogeneous, and evolving nature of cancer, it is essential for a system-oriented view to be adopted in order to understand the pathogenic mechanism of cancer which will eventually lead to the drug discovery and treatment of patients. This book not only provides new insights from system modeling and large scale experimental data, but also will allow the reader to perceive the systematic characteristics of cancer under some micro-environments. Based on the systems biology method and genome-wide high throughput data, the book presents the PPI network, gene regulatory network and epigenetic network as an integrated genetic and epigenetic cellular network of lung cancer, bladder cancer, thyroid cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer to investigate their core signaling pathways of the carcinogenesis process to identify their corresponding significant carcinogenic biomarkers as drug targets for systems drug discovery and design. Consequently, the book presents the design of a multiple-molecule drug that can target these biomarkers for the therapeutic treatment of cancer with fewer side effects.
Investigations into the zero-temperature phases in various frustrated and random Ising models in a transverse or tunnelling field have caught attention very recently in the context of quantum magnetisation of glasses and other frustrated systems. This book gives a detailed discussion of the various theoretical techniques developed for the study of transverse Ising models and of the results of these studies with regular and random frustration, dilution, randomness, etc. Recent developments in the studies on their (quantum) relaxational dynamics, such as in quantum hysteresis, are also treated. The detailed presentation of original results and the reviews given here are expected to inspire further research in the exciting field of quantum many-body systems with randomness and frustration.

This book presents a survey of the relatively new research field of gradient inequalities and their applications. The exposition emphasizes the powerful applications of gradient inequalities in studying asymptotic behavior and stability of gradient-like dynamical systems. It explains in-depth how gradient inequalities are established and how they can be used to prove convergence and stability of solutions to gradient-like systems. This book will serve as an introduction for furtherstudies of gradient inequalities and their applications in other fields, such as geometry and computer sciences. This book is written for advanced graduate students, researchers and applied mathematicians interested in dynamical systems and mathematical modeling.
Robust and nonparametric statistical methods have their foundation in fields ranging from agricultural science to astronomy, from biomedical sciences to the public health disciplines, and, more recently, in genomics, bioinformatics, and financial statistics. These disciplines are presently nourished by data mining and high-level computer-based algo
Power system oscillations without a big disturbance occur spontaneously in a power system and if they are not damped out properly may lead to grid failure. In this book we examine the methodology to study this phenomenon from several angles. Modeling the system to investigate these oscillations is given top priority along with physical interpretation of the phenomenon. The book covers low frequency 1-3 Hz as well as sub synchronous oscillations in the 10-50 Hz range. The latter are called torsional oscillations. Design of Power system stabilizers as well as damping techniques for sub synchronous oscillations are discussed. Modeling and design of FACTS devices is included. The small signal analysis of multimachine systems along with the selective computation of Eigen value(s) of interest in a large system is presented.
Most of the methods described in this book can be used with cosmetic modifications to solve transfer problems of greater complexity. All attempts have been made to make the book self-contained.
