This book compares selected Indian novels with their Western models, to trace the differences appearing in them to the traditions of thought and understanding that had influenced the respective world-views. Beginning with a survey of the rise of modernity in India, this book presents a comparative review of Western and Indian ontological interpretations of the major themes governing these novels. These novels in Bengali, Hindi and English experiment with the form of the Western psychological novel to portray the individual’s private thoughts and experiences realistically. They represent that body of fiction which dwells on the different aspects of the rise of the modernist Indian temperament under British influence. The novels map nearly half a century of the individual’s struggle for meaning and freedom in a society trapped between history, tradition and westernization. Using free translations, this book illustrates the novelists’ methods of improvisation with Western themes, styles and techniques to portray the Indian understanding of selfhood, art, and reality. The concluding comparative poetics discusses in a comparative perspective, the poetic principles underlying the novelists’ assimilation, comparison, and parody of the Western texts. A mutual comparison of the Indian novels illustrates the diversity that characterizes the cross-cultural experience of Indian modernity. How did thousands of Indians who migrated to the Pacific Coast of North America during the early twentieth century come to forge an anticolonial movement that British authorities claimed nearly toppled their rule in India during the First World War? Seema Sohi traces how Indian labor migrants, students, and intellectual activists who journeyed across the globe seeking to escape the exploitative and politically repressive policies of the British Raj, linked restrictive immigration policies and political repression in North America to colonial subjugation at home. In the process, they developed an international anticolonial consciousness that boldly confronted the British and American empires. Hoping to become an important symbol for those battling against racial oppression and colonial subjugation across the world, Indian anticolonialists also provoked a global inter-imperial collaboration between U.S. and British officials to repress anticolonial revolt. They symbolized the hope of the world's racialized subjects and the fears of those who worried about the global disorder they could portend. Echoes of Mutiny provides an in-depth and transnational look at the deeply intertwined relationship between anti-Asian racism, Indian anticolonialism, and state antiradicalism in early twentieth century U.S. and global history. Through extensive archival research, Sohi uncovers the dialectical relationship between the rise of Indian anticolonialism and state repression in North America and demonstrates how Indian anticolonialists served as catalysts for the implementation of restrictive U.S. immigration and antiradical laws as well as the expansion of state power in early twentieth century India and America. Indian migrants came to understand their struggles against racial exclusion and political repression in North America as part of a broader movement against white supremacy and colonialism and articulated radical visions of anticolonialism that called not only for the end of British rule in India but the forging of democracies across the world.

The author Seema Kazi questions the way in which the rise of the Hindu right-wing has led to a tightening of the interpretations of Muslim women’s rights and freedoms, along with the subordination of Muslim women’s concerns to the demands of Muslim communal identity. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Chemistry - Bio-chemistry, , course: Biochemistry, language: English, abstract: Antioxidants are vital substances protecting cells from oxidative damage of biological molecules like DNA, proteins, lipids and maintain normal homeostasis in cell by scavenging free radicals. Oxidative stress is one of the major source of free radicals and causing disorders like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons, cardiovascular diseases, and other degenerative disorders. Antioxidants finds application in medicine as they, act as immunoregulators, fight against ageing and also reported to induce apoptosis, cell cycle arrest against some cancer cell lines. Antioxidant also finds application in cosmetic industry and even as topical formulation. They are used as a preservative and also to increase the shelf life of frozen fish, canned mushrooms, meat, juice and general foods. Studies suggested that medicinal plants are a potential, inexpensive and safe source of antioxidants as they are enriched with bioactive compounds. Berberies aristata is commonly called as Daruhaldi or Chitra belongs to family Berberidaceae. The use of root extract as antipyretic, antiseptic, in the treatment of conjunctivitis, ulcers and hepatic disorders have been reported in earlier studies by various workers. The plant has been used for treatment of skin diseases, inflammation, diarrhoea and jaundice. Medicinal plants in the present study were screened for their antioxidant potential against different radicals like DPPH, superoxide, hydroxyl and peroxide. Among them ethanolic roots extract B.aristata exhibit highest antioxidant ability and least IC50 value. Thus further, the ethanolic root extract of B.aristata was subjected to activity guided isolation of antioxidants. Upon liquid-liquid fractionation ethyl acetate fraction exhibited highest radical scavenging activity against DPPH and peroxide radicals. In addition, the IC50 for DPPH radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation were significantly less compared to crude ethanol extract indicating quality of antioxidants in ethyl acetate fraction.
