Pierre Bourdieu conceptualizes the social as an economy. With an empirical example of free water transfers between 'water rich' and 'water poor' neighbours, this book demonstrates the relevance of moral considerations in habitualized everyday practice. Using Luc Boltanski's work on Justifications, the analysis introduces economic imperfection into Bourdieu's 'perfect' Economy of Symbolic Goods. By presenting a Poltiical Ecology of the neighbourly waterscape from the perspective of water consumers, this book is a scientific plea for a holistic analysis of water beyond the scale of policy making"--Publisher's description
The study approaches the Refutatio omnium haeresium by "Hippolytus of Rome" from a completely new perspective. It offers a detailed analysis of the genre of the writing, which is identified as a protreptikos, a promotional writing for Christianity. One focus is the elaboration of the intention and working method of its author against the background of the method of authors of the imperial period. It is shown how the author creatively changes and compiles his original sources to suit his needs. Passages through the special material make it likely that it is largely a literary product of the author. This is followed by an extensive study of the so-called Peratics, which combines structural analysis and thorough examination of content.
Rethinking Metonymy is the first monograph to confront and resolve issues surrounding problematic appropriations of metonymy in the humanities. By developing a ground-breaking new definition based on analysis of examples in Greek tragedy and lyric poetry, it sets an agenda for far-reaching reconsiderations in literary studies and beyond.
The utilization of thermodynamic and mobility data plays a major role in phase-field modeling. This work discusses different formulations for the thermodynamic quantities of a grand potential model along with practices to determine parameters from datasets. The framework is used to study solidification of Al-Si-Mg for a variation of composition, diffusivities and surface energy anisotropies. To verify the simulations, they are compared with solidification theories.
By implementing a European approach, the study offers a new view on the controversial pontificate of John XXII. Through examination of the correspondence preserved in the papal registers, classic topics like the dispute between papacy and empire can be interpreted within a broader context while case studies ranging from the British Isles to the Mediterranean reveal the mechanisms and actors of papal politics in late medieval Europe.
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
This essay argues that we can only develop a proper grasp of Kant's practical philosophy if we appreciate the central role played in his thought by the notion of the interests of reason. While it is generally acknowledged that Kant does not regard reason as a purely instrumental faculty, but sees it as endowed with its own essential interests, this book is the first to explain how the notion of the interests of reason lies at the heart of his philosophical project - and how it allows us to make sense of some of the most puzzling aspects of his practical philosophy.
In Germany at the turn of the century, Buddhism transformed from an obscure topic, of interest to only a few misfit scholars, into a cultural phenomenon. Many of the foremost authors of the period were profoundly influenced by this rapid rise of Buddhism—among them, some of the best-known names in the German-Jewish canon. Sebastian Musch excavates this neglected dimension of German-Jewish identity, drawing on philosophical treatises, novels, essays, diaries, and letters to trace the history of Jewish-Buddhist encounters up to the start of the Second World War. Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, Leo Baeck, Theodor Lessing, Jakob Wassermann, Walter Hasenclever, and Lion Feuchtwanger are featured alongside other, lesser known figures like Paul Cohen-Portheim and Walter Tausk. As Musch shows, when these thinkers wrote about Buddhism, they were also negotiating their own Jewishness.

The German writer and art critic Carl Einstein (1885–1940) has long been acknowledged as an important figure in the history of modern art, and yet he is often sidelined as an enigma. In Form as Revolt Sebastian Zeidler recovers Einstein's multifaceted career, offering the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Einstein in English.Einstein first emerged as a writer of experimental prose through his involvement with the anarchist journal Die Aktion. After a few limited forays into art criticism, he burst onto the art scene in 1915 with his book Negro Sculpture, at once a formalist intervention into the contemporary theory and practice of European sculpture and a manifesto for the sophistication of African art. Einstein would go on to publish seminal texts on the cubist paintings of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. His contributions to the surrealist magazine Documents (which Einstein cofounded with Georges Bataille), including writings on Picasso and Paul Klee, remain unsurpassed in their depth and complexity. In a series of close visual analyses—illustrated with major works by Braque, Picasso, and Klee—Zeidler retrieves the theoretical resources that Einstein brought to bear on their art. Form as Revolt shows us that to rediscover Einstein's art criticism is to see the work of great modernist artists anew through the eyes of one of the most gifted left-wing formalists of the twentieth century.
// A humanist, ecological, and technological call to action - designed as a bilingual e-book in German and English. English Change today is happening faster than ever before. We are overwhelmed by new technologies and an excess of information, and we feel that we and what we used to think of as society are being suffocated. Those who drive this change pursue primarily two goals: profit and power. They lure us with clickbait and abuse us as a data pool, reducing our existence to one of human resource and consumer. In doing so they threaten our democracy, our diversity, even our humanity itself. It doesn t have to be like this, thinks humanist and entrepreneur Christopher Peterka. Instead of basing our ambition on purely economic yield, he pleads for a radical new dialogue about being human: Who do we want to be? How do we want to live together as a society? What meaning is our ambition meant to have? We have to consider these questions afresh, because if we don t do so, others will. But this means leaving behind short term solutions, and taking a stance against the current system to throw off the shackles that tie us down. Your Choice is a call to action that encourages us to challenge the status quo and to bring lasting change as progressive optimists. To carry its global appeal across geographical boundaries, this book is designed as a bilingual e-book in German and English.
This volume contains parallel texts and translations of all Bach's church and secular cantatas that have come down to us complete. The volume also includes a short glossary of geographical and mythological names, a list of dedicatees of the secular cantatas, a list of the poets with their dates, and an introduction to the cantatas by Martin Neary, formerly organist of Winchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.
