This book analyses the discourses of Orthodox Christianity in Western Europe to demonstrate the emerging discrepancies between the mother Church in the East and its newer Western congregations. Showing the genesis and development of these discourses over the twentieth century, it examines the challenges the Orthodox Church is facing in the modern world. Organised along four different discursive fields, the book uses these fields to analyse the Orthodox Church in Western Europe during the twentieth century. It explores pastoral, ecclesiological, institutional and ecumenical discourses in order to present a holistic view of how the Church views itself and how it seeks to interact with other denominations. Taken together, these four fields reveal a discursive vitality outside of the traditionally Orthodox societies that is, however, only partly reabsorbed by the church hierarchs in core Orthodox regions, like Southeast Europe and Russia. The Orthodox Church is a complex and multi-faceted global reality.Therefore, this book will be a vital guide to scholars studying the Orthodox Church, ecumenism and religion in Europe, as well as those working in religious studies, sociology of religion, and theology more generally.

The concept of "innovation systems" has gained considerable attention from scholars and politicians alike. How can prospective outsourcing clients prepare their internal organizational workflows to meet the challenges associated with an outsourcing venture with little penalty in time, cost, and effort? Along this guiding question, the author empirically investigates the ways in which several factors of the client company's internal organizational context affect the outcomes of their outsourcing efforts. The investigated factors represent the client's IT capability, the explicit knowledge in form of business process documentation available within the company, and the level of alignment between the client's IT and business domains. Based on qualitative and quantitative empirical data, S. F. Martin demonstrates that each of these client-specific factors has a significant inter-organizational impact, affecting the quality of the relationship between client and provider, the vendor’s performance, and outsourcing success.

Scholars have noticed the importance of innovation for a nation's wealth; and the possibility that some nations could be better at innovating than others. This study takes the Confucian Dynamism dimension of national culture as focal lens to investigate how cultural values influence the innovativeness of societies. A theoretical model is developed and tested with data from 19 countries for the years 1996 to 2006. The results indicate that Confucian Dynamism does influence national innovativeness. The results also lead to a revised model of how Confucian Dynamism could influence national innovativeness. In addition, this study offers possible explanations of how Confucian Dynamism influences innovation on the individual- and firm-level.
Programming languages that use the object-oriented approach have been around for quite a while now. Most of them use either a static or a dynamic type system. However, both types are very common in the industry. But, in spite of their common use in science and practice, only very few scientific studies have tried to evaluate the two type systems' usefulness in certain scenarios. There are arguments for both systems. For example, static type systems are said to aid the programmer in the prevention of type errors, and further, they provide documentation help for, there is an explicit need to annotate variables and methods with their respective types. This book describes a controlled experiment that was conducted to shed some light into the presented matter. Which of the type systems can live up to its promises? Is one of these better suited for a particular task? And which type system is the most supportive in a problem solving? The main hypothesis claims that a static type system is faster in a problem solving in use of an undocumented API. Thus, in the study, the participants need to solve different programming tasks in an undocumented API environment with the help of the static type system (Java), and the dynamic type system (Groovy). The author starts with a short introduction to the topic, the experimentation, and the motivation. Then, he describes a list of related works, and proceeds to the description of the experiment, its evaluation, and finally, the discussion of the results. This book should prove interesting reading for anyone who is interested in the mechanics that drive programmer productivity and performance that depend on the kind of technology used, as well as for anyone who might be interested in empirical research in software engineering, in general.
This book presents a new approach to examining the perceived quality of audiovisual sequences. It uses electroencephalography (EEG) to explain in detail how user quality judgments are formed within a test participant, and what the physiological implications might be when subjects are exposed to lower quality media. Systems of production today face an increasing need to respond to diverse societal challenges. This development has resulted in the need for a transition from a fossil- and mineral resource-dependent paradigm towards a path that takes advantage of bio-based resources. In this context, wood is going to be an important feedstock and an essential enabler towards the transition from a fossil-based to a bio-based society. However, wood is not available infinitely. Hence, increasing the efficiency of the processing and utilization of wood is an imperative. In this context, interorganizational IT plays a decisive role. Therefore, this cumulative dissertation sets out to offer insights into the circumstances and causal mechanisms of IT usage behaviors in the wood industry. Encompassing rich empirical data, the thesis provides answers to research questions surrounding the fields of interorganizational IT adoption and interorganizational IT value. The insights provide implications for practitioners in the wood industry on how to promote the adoption of interorganizational IT and how to design structures and processes to effectively profit from investments in IT. In addition, the thesis also provides guidance for academics studying the phenomena of IT adoption and IT value with regard to sector-specific characteristics.
