But what happens when they cover their face with a mask? Permanently, as a second face. The phenomenon can be found in the mainstream as well as in the underground. The mask does not break with the ideal of authenticity. Rather, depending on how it is staged, it refers to the most diverse discourses, can appear cool or grotesque, become a logo or create anonymity. The essay uses mainly two examples (Sido, Slipknot) to show how the mask constructs the persona of pop stars - and thus reveals structures of pop music.

This book explores how a group of Victorian liberal writers that included George Eliot, Walter Pater, and Matthew Arnold became attracted to new theories of religion as a function of race and ethnicity. Since the early modern period, British liberals had typically constructed religion as a zone of personal belief that defined modern individuality and interiority. During the 1860s, however, Eliot, Arnold, and other literary liberals began to claim that religion could actually do the most for the modern self when it came as a kind of involuntary inheritance. Stimulated by the emerging science of anthropology, they imagined that religious experiences embedded in race or ethnicity could render the self heterogeneous, while the individual who insisted upon selecting his or her own beliefs would become narrow and parochial. By rethinking the grounds of religion, this book argues, these writers were ultimately trying to shift liberal individualism away from a classical Protestant liberalism that celebrated interiority and agency and toward one that valorized eclecticism and the capacity to keep multiple values in play. More broadly, their work offers us a new picture of secularization, not as a process of religious decline, but as the reinscription of religion as an ordinary feature of human life—like art, or politics, or sex—whose function could be debated.

La COVID-19 comenzó como una emergencia sanitaria, pero está evolucionando rápidamente hacia una crisis del empleo. Todavía existe incertidumbre sobre la gravedad del impacto económico de la pandemia. Sin embargo, el lastre para el empleo en la región podría prolongarse más que la propia pandemia. Más allá del impacto inmediato sobre el nivel de empleo, la crisis está profundizando y acelerando la transformación del empleo, anticipando el futuro. Efecto viral: COVID-19 y la transformación acelerada del empleo en América Latina y el Caribe se enfoca en las tendencias subyacentes que han estado cambiando significativamente el mercado laboral en la región: la desindustrialización prematura, la servicificación de la economía y los cambios en las habilidades requeridas en los empleos a medida que avanza la automatización. Las conclusiones de este informe tienen varias implicancias importantes para la política económica. Algunas de estas implicancias están relacionadas con los desafíos de productividad a los que ya se enfrentaba América Latina y el Caribe después del final de la Década Dorada en 2013. Otras implicancias políticas podrían comenzar a ganar relevancia por la crisis de COVID-19. A medida que los sectores se ven afectados de diferentes maneras y el trabajo a distancia se vuelve más común, los Gobiernos deben responder con medidas que apoyen una transformación fluida de los puestos de trabajo, que sean socialmente aceptables y que contribuyan al crecimiento de la productividad, incluida la inversion en el capital humano de la fuerza de trabajo. La transformación acelerada de los puestos de trabajo exige un nuevo planteamiento de la normativa laboral y las políticas de protección social. Los países de América Latina y el Caribe desarrollaron una arquitectura institucional orientada a los trabajadores asalariados del sector formal, que rápidamente se está volviendo anticuada. El informe, por ende, refiere a una agenda política que se ocupe de la regulación flexible de las formas emergentes de trabajo de manera que incentive el empleo y apoye la formalización, ampliando así la cobertura de la protección social a segmentos más amplios de la población.

2020 Blues Hall of Fame Classic of Blues Literature Jimi Hendrix called Earl Hooker “the master of the wah-wah pedal.” Buddy Guy slept with one of Hooker's slides beneath his pillow hoping to tap some of the elder bluesman's power. And B. B. King has said repeatedly that, for his money, Hooker was the best guitar player he ever met. Tragically, Earl Hooker died of tuberculosis in 1970 when he was on the verge of international success just as the Blues Revival of the late sixties and early seventies was reaching full volume. Second cousin to now-famous bluesman John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker was born in Mississippi in 1929, and reared in black South Side Chicago where his parents settled in 1930. From the late 1940s on, he was recognized as the most creative electric blues guitarist of his generation. He was a “musician's musician,” defining the art of blues slide guitar and playing in sessions and shows with blues greats Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, and B. B. King. A favorite of black club and neighborhood bar audiences in the Midwest, and a seasoned entertainer in the rural states of the Deep South, Hooker spent over twenty-five years of his short existence burning up U.S. highways, making brilliant appearances wherever he played. Until the last year of his life, Hooker had only a few singles on obscure labels to show for all the hard work. The situation changed in his last few months when his following expanded dramatically. Droves of young whites were seeking American blues tunes and causing a blues album boom. When he died, his star's rise was extinguished. Known primarily as a guitarist rather than a vocalist, Hooker did not leave a songbook for his biographer to mine. Only his peers remained to praise his talent and pass on his legend. “Earl Hooker's life may tell us a lot about the blues,” biographer Sebastian Danchin says, “but it also tells us a great deal about his milieu. This book documents the culture of the ghetto through the example of a central character, someone who is to be regarded as a catalyst of the characteristic traits of his community.” Like the tales of so many other unheralded talents among bluesmen, Earl Hooker, Blues Master, Hooker's life story, has all the elements of a great blues song—late nights, long roads, poverty, trouble, and a soul-felt pining for what could have been.

Networks are convenient mathematical models to represent the structure of complex systems, from cells to societies. Sebastian Watzl shows that attention is a central structural feature of the mind. The first half of the book provides an account of the nature of attention. Attention is prioritizing, it consists in regulating priority structures. Attention is not another element of the mind, but constituted by structures that organize, integrate, and coordinate the parts of our mind. Attention thus integrates the perceptual and intellectual, the cognitive and motivational, and the epistemic and practical. The second half of the book concerns the relationship between attention and consciousness. Watzl argues that attentional structure shapes consciousness into what is central and what is peripheral. The center-periphery structure of consciousness cannot be reduced to the structure of how the world appears to the subject. What it is like for us thus goes beyond the way the world appears to us. On this basis, a new view of consciousness is offered. In each conscious experience we actively take a stance on the world we appear to encounter. It is in this sense that our conscious experience is our subjective perspective.

Danielewski's Only Revolutions (2006), Paul Beatty's Slumberland (2008) and Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day (2006)-and argues that they create different 'subjects of the event' that are empowered with ?reagency.? The ?subject of the event? and its empowerment, what this book calls ?reagency,? implies that subjects only evolve out of their confrontation with the revolutionary impetus that events propel. Unlike a humanist capability of having agency, reagency is defined as a repetitive subjective praxis that is contingent upon events, which is given a concrete literary form in the novels under investigation.
