The Confederation Poets were a group of Canadian English-language poets of the late nineteenth century whose work expressed the national consciousness inspired by the Confederation of 1867. Their transcendental and romantic praise of the Canadian landscape would go on to dominate Canadian poetry until the twentieth century. They were also called the Maple Tree School due to how their verses portrayed a touching love for the Canadian landscape. Scott's aim was to present the complete story of flagellation and its attendant mixture of cruelty, eroticism, superstition, voluptuousness and persecution. All the historical, sociological, psychological and anthropological aspects of the practice are examined, in order to understand the full significance of flagellation as a social phenomenon. The physical, psychological and pathological effects of corporal punishment, including the effects of flagellation on sexual health, are also analysed. The book is divided into four parts - the psychology of flagellation, penal flagellation, religious flagellation and the case for and against corporal punishment - with illustrations and a useful bibliography. Written in 1938, this remains an authoritative work on the subject.

These letters and diaries allow the reader to trace Haig's career and developing character. What they reveal may well surprise his critics. Field Marshal Lord Haig will remain a hugely controversial figure due to his pre-eminent role during The Great War. He was a hugely popular public figure in the post WW1 years and revered by those who served under him. His death in 1928 was a major occasion for mourning. Only later was he heavily criticised for the slaughter of the trenches.
