We all say that we care about children. We all know that millions of children around the world, including in the United States, are suffering physically, materially, and emotionally and are unable to reach their full potential. Moreover, their material deprivation and physical ills often prevent them from responding to the gospel. Most of us conclude that we cannot do anything significant to help the impoverished children living in our own backyards let alone those living in the slums of Nairobi or the hinterlands of Haiti. We can, however, do much to improve their lives materially and spiritually. Through praying, giving generously, sponsoring children, volunteering with aid organizations, living more simply, investing and shopping more prudently, and advocating more zealously in the political arena, we can make a difference. We can prod politicians, business executives, and church leaders to prioritize aiding destitute children. We can support one of the hundreds of organizations that are working effectively to help indigent children have better lives. Suffer the Children describes the plight of poor children and provides many practical ways we can participate in one of the most important crusades to improve our world. The authors have assigned all their royalties to organizations working to aid children.

Included in the book are the 'sociological stories' of protests against the war in Operations RAW and Dewey Canyon III: the successful effort to place post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Third Edition (DSM-III), of the American Psychiatric Association; the building of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., despite fierce opposition; and the long-running controversy over the herbicide Agent Orange. In the last chapter the author details the sociological thinking that informs his stories, and develops the implications for understanding social movements in general and veterans' issues in particular.

The American Civil War, 1861-1865, was the culmination of many complex causes and factors. Slavery was not the direct or proximate cause of the war; rather, it was intertwined with these other complex issues and factors that led to the war (see Appendix A). But it is not much of a stretch to say it was also about the American West--fought to determine the future control of that part of the United States. Although most of the battles took place in the east and southeast, the American West held much political and economic value for both the North and the South. The ports of California would allow the Confederate States to avoid the Union blockade of Southern ports. The gold and silver of the West could provide additional funding sources for the war for both sides. Last but not least, all of the territories and states held value for their present or future legislative votes in both chambers of Congress. What role did Colorado play in the Civil War and what role did Confederate Veterans play in development of Colorado? Two Colorado Governors were Confederate Veterans--James B. Grant, the third governor of Colorado served in the 20th Alabama Light Artillery Battalion, and Charles S. Thomas, the eleventh governor of Colorado served in the Georgia State Militia. Georgia Confederate Veterans William and Joseph Russell discovered gold on Little Dry Creek along the Platte River that began the "Pikes Peak or Bust" Gold Rush in 1858. The brothers founded the town of Auraria on Cherry Creek, which became the first permanent settlement of what would later become Denver. Confederate Veterans also served as senators, a congressmen, as well as officials in towns and municipalities all across the state. These prominent Colorado Confederate Veterans are listed in this book, along with the positions they held. Additionally, there are 506 known Confederate Veterans buried in Colorado. These Veterans are detailed in this book, with their names, ranks, units, and the location of their graves. The Civil War radically changed the role of women on both sides of the war. Women filled positions previously held by men, and many women found themselves working outside the home and earning money for the first time in their lives. Most of the Southern women served on the home front, but many also served the Confederacy as nurses, spies, couriers, and dignitaries, while some even served in uniform. You can read about some of their exploits in this book. Native Americans also served in the Confederate States Army. Their units and achievements are detailed herein.

This book examines the role of religion in the story of Oliver Cromwell's invasion and subsequent occupation of Scotland. Analysis of the printed propaganda produced by the Scots and the English makes it clear that both nations defined their positions, and gained support, in overtly religious terms. During their decade-long occupation of Scotland, the English Commonwealth actively sought to undermine Scottish Presbyterianism. Public disputes, public preaching and Scotland's printing presses were all used to weaken the influence of the Kirk, while eager English soldiers and chaplains tried to convert Scots to their own particular religious sects. Policies of the Scottish Kirk and State in the previous decade had ostracised a significant portion of the Scottish people. As a result, English missionaries found some Scots eager to hear alternative forms of Protestantism preached. Dispelling myths that the sectarian presence had little impact on Scottish religion, this book describes the endeavours of the Independents, Baptists and Quakers to gain converts, with varying degrees of success.

Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don’t have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same “gospel-shape” that is found throughout the Bible. Avian Surgical Anatomy: Thoracic and Pelvic Limbs by Orosz, Ensley and Haynes, was published in 1992 and has served as a standard guide for those performing orthopedic surgery on birds. That foundational work is out of print but the need for a concise source of avian surgical anatomy has not changed. Our objective in this edition has been to recapture the musculoskeletal anatomy of the original work and to expand the scope to include comprehensive coverage for the clinical management of common fractures of the long bones of birds, primarily raptors. The procedures described have been honed over two decades of development and refinement by clinicians at the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. In addition, we have included details of the vascular anatomy of the limbs, further informing the surgeon and clinician. The class Aves includes thousands of species with countless anatomic variations. Although it is impractical to represent every species, birds commonly encountered in private practice and rehabilitation medicine including poultry, pigeons, parrots and birds of prey were chosen for this book. Details of the vascular anatomy of the limbs were obtained by high resolution digital computed tomography imaging of the appendicular skeleton of several diverse bird species. These images provide a unique comparative aspect that clinicians will find useful in conducting surgical procedures. This new information is intended to help the reader better understand skeletal and vascular anatomy, and thus improve interpretation, reporting of findings, treatment and teaching. This new information is intended to help the reader better understand relationships between musculoskeletal and vascular anatomy, helping the surgeon preserve vasculature during complex orthopedic procedures. It is our hope that it will enrich the interpretation, reporting of findings, development of treatment methods and the teaching of management procedures for orthopedic issues in birds. Since publication of the first edition, numerous advances have been made and published relative to avian orthopedics. In this edition, you will find comprehensive discussion of orthopedic conditions, and clinical management that represents best treatment options and current practices. The title of the book has been changed to reflect inclusion of that information. As our knowledge of avian anatomy, health and disease progresses, so does the need for improved resources that convey this valuable information. Over time the information contained herein will also need to be expanded and updated. The authors humbly submit this work to the veterinary and scientific community for review and scrutiny. We hope that it will contribute to the betterment of avian care.
