This chapter first reviews the current use of multimode fibers with short-wavelength VCSELS for short-distance applications. Standards are in place for 100Gb/s applications based on 10Gb/s optics and are being developed for ∼25Gb/s optics. Light propagation in multimode fibers is briefly discussed to explain the DMD measurement and the metrics developed to qualify OM3 and OM4 fiber, including calculated effective modal bandwidth (EMBc). Bend-insensitive multimode fiber is presented, explaining how the new fiber achieves high bandwidth with low bend loss. New fibers for short-distance consumer applications and home networking are discussed. Finally, fibers designed for high-performance computing (HPC) are reviewed, including multicore fibers for optical interconnects.

This book presents a theory of creativity that addresses some of the many hard problems which must be solved to build a creative computer. It also presents an exploration of the kinds of goals and plans needed to write simple short stories. These theories have been implemented in a computer program called MINSTREL which tells stories about King Arthur and his knights. While far from being the silicon author of the future, MINSTREL does illuminate many of the interesting and difficult issues involved in constructing a creative computer. The results presented here should be of interest to at least three different groups of people. Artificial intelligence researchers should find this work an interesting application of symbolic AI to the problems of story-telling and creativity. Psychologists interested in creativity and imagination should benefit from the attempt to build a detailed, explicit model of the creative process. Finally, authors and others interested in how people write should find MINSTREL's model of the author-level writing process thought-provoking.

Colonial America presented a new world of natural curiosities for settlers as well as the London-based scientific community. Parrish shows how scientific knowledge about America, rather than flowing strictly from metropole to colony, emerged from a horizontal exchange of information across the Atlantic. Although hierarchies of gender, class, institutional learning, place of birth or residence, and race persisted within the natural history community, the contributions of any participant were considered valuable as long as they supplied novel data or specimens from the American side of the Atlantic. Thus Anglo-American nonelites, women, Indians, and enslaved Africans all played crucial roles in gathering and relaying new information to Europe. Recognizing a significant tradition of nature writing and representation in North America well before the Transcendentalists, American Curiosity also enlarges our notions of the scientific Enlightenment by looking beyond European centers to find a socially inclusive American base to a true transatlantic expansion of knowledge.
