It has become almost accepted knowledge within international policy circles that efforts against drug trafficking and drug abuse violate human rights, and that the entire international drug control regime needs to be changed (or even discarded altogether) to adopt a more 'rights respecting' approach. Though this view has been promoted by many prominent figures and organisations, the author of this book uses his expertise in both human rights and drug control to show that the arguments advanced in this area do not stand close scrutiny. The arguments are in fact based on selective and questionable interpretations of international human rights standards, and on a general notion – more and more clearly stated – that there is a human right to take drugs, and that any effort to combat drug abuse by definition violates this right. There is no such right in international law, and the author objects to the misuse of human rights language as a marketing tool to bring about a 'back door' legalisation of drugs. Human rights issues must be addressed, but that in no way means that the international drug control regime must be discarded, or that efforts against drugs must be stopped.

Hydrogels are crosslinked polymeric networks containing hydrophilic groups that promote swelling due to interaction with water [1]. While hydrogels are heavily used in the field of regenerative medicine, their application to biomedical systems is not new. In fact, it has been suggested that they were truly the first polymer materials to be developed for use in man [2]. They have been in use for clinical applications since the 1960s, initially for use in ocular applications including contact lenses and intraocular lenses due to their favorable oxygen permeability and lack of irritation leading to inflammation and foreign body response, which was observed with other plastics [3]. Before the concept of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine had gained traction, hydrogels were used for cell encapsulation [4]. They have also been utilized extensively in the clinic for wound healing applications due to their oxygen permeability, high water content, and ability to shield wounds from external agents. Perhaps the largest research focus and utility of hydrogels has been found in their use as controlled release systems. This combination of controlled release and cell encapsulation has led to increasing uses of hydrogels in regenerative medicine applications.
Modern Surgical Pathology, 2nd Edition presents today's most complete, current, and practical assistance in evaluating and signing out surgical specimens. Nearly 3,000 high-quality color pathology images provide a crystal-clear basis for comparison to any sample you see under the microscope. Clinical, gross, microscopic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features are integrated as appropriate for all tumors and tumor-like lesions, addressing all of the investigative contexts relevant to formulating an accurate diagnosis. Edited by four leading surgical pathologists - Noel Weidner, MD, Richard J. Cote, MD, Saul Suster, MD and Lawrence M. Weiss, MD - with contributions from more than 70 other experts, Modern Surgical Pathology, 2nd Edition delivers the well-rounded, well-organized, richly illustrated, user-friendly guidance you need to efficiently arrive at confident diagnoses for even the most challenging lesions. Contributions from many leading surgical pathologists give you well-rounded, expert answers to any question that you may face. Clinical, gross, microscopic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features are correlated as appropriate for every type of surgical pathology specimen, addressing all of the investigative contexts relevant to formulating an accurate diagnosis and thereby ensuring a completely accurate surgical report. Nearly 3,000 brand-new, high-quality color pathology images provide a crystal-clear basis for comparison to any specimen you see under the microscope. A completely rewritten section on the female reproductive tract offers many more illustrations of common entities to help you more easily distinguish between tumors and tumor-like lesions. Expanded coverage of non-neoplastic diseases and disorders makes it easier to recognize benign conditions that can mimic malignancy. The latest classification schemes and criteria for malignancy, incorporated throughout, enable you to include the most current gradings in your reports. A new, more consistent organization explores anatomy/histology, gross and microscopic appearance, adjunct techniques, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis for each neoplastic or non-neoplastic lesion, facilitating rapid consultation in the reporting room. An increased number of differential diagnosis and classification tables expedite diagnosis.
To what extent do the justices on the Supreme Court behave strategically? In Strategy on the United States Supreme Court, Saul Brenner and Joseph M. Whitmeyer investigate the answers to this question and reveal that justices are substantially less strategic than many Supreme Court scholars believe. By examining the research to date on each of the justice's important activities, Brenner and Whitmeyer's work shows that the justices often do not cast their certiorari votes in accord with the outcome-prediction strategy, that the other members of the conference coalition bargain successfully with the majority opinion writer in less than 6 percent of the situations, and that most of the fluidity in voting on the Court is nonstrategic. This work is essential to understanding how strategic behavior - or its absence - influences the decisions of the Supreme Court and, as a result, American politics and society.
Part of the popular Biopsy Interpretation Series, Biopsy Interpretation of the Lung, Second Edition, is a concise, practical resource with a strong focus on diagnosis and management-oriented ancillary testing. It provides superbly illustrated coverage of the full range of neoplasms and non-neoplastic entities arising within the lung. Focusing on the daily tasks and needs of the general pathologist, this updated Second Edition is an excellent bench reference for the interpretation of the most common lung biopsies and is also a helpful resource for surgical pathologists, pathology residents, pathology fellows, pulmonologists, pulmonology fellows, and thoracic surgeons.
Psychology exists all around us. It influences politics, policy, social interactions, teaching and learning science, and even workplace practices. Some of the world's leading research scientists in the field have contributed to this new book on malaria vaccine development. The book examines various strategies being pursued against the different stages of the parasite (the sporozoite, asexual erythrocytic stages, and sexual stages). It describes vaccines that combat the parasite directly, vaccines aimed at preventing disease, vaccines based on attenuated parasites, and vaccines based on small, carefully defined synthetic peptides. The book provides a compendium of current approaches, lists of preferred antigens, and the results of vaccine trials to date. Molecular immunology involved with both the natural immune response to parasites and with the constraints on inducing immunity are emphasized throughout the book. Views on how vaccines may be tested and then integrated into malaria control programs are also discussed. Molecular Immunological Considerations in Malaria Vaccine Development will be useful for researchers and students in immunology, parasitology, biotechnology, vaccine design, and tropical and public health.
Using a balanced approach, Social Psychology, 2e connects social psychology theories, research methods, and basic findings to real-world applications with a current-events emphasis. The issue of human security comes into play in nearly every important policy debate in global politics, and the protection of human rights is now recognized as one of the main functions of any legitimate modern state. How can the international community best ensure that human rights are protected while simultaneously protecting state security? Who should intervene in cases of mass, gross violations, and when are military actions justified? This book seeks to address and explore these difficult and pressing questions by presenting the differing views of commentators from various ends of the spectrum. Human Rights, Human Security, and State Security: The Intersection consists of three volumes, with each focusing primarily on one of the three broad areas while also drawing connections between them. A powerful resource for policy makers and practitioners in national governments, members of international organizations, and scholars, the innovative thinking presented will give readers a deepened understanding of the various international issues and help them to formulate effective policies in today's complex international landscape.
