The army of Frederick the Great of Prussia is generally known as an efficient fighting machine based on brutal and strict drill procedures that led to broken but fearless soldiers as well as glorious battle victories. In analysing the mentalities of the men who established Prussia's great power status, Prussian Army Soldiers and the Seven Years' War fundamentally challenges this interpretation. Drawing on a vast array of primary sources (including the writing of regimental chaplain Küster, who could probably be called the first modern military psychologist) and presenting the first English translation of 12 letters of common Prussian soldiers from the Seven Years' War, this book shows that the soldiers were feeling individuals. They were loving husbands, vulnerable little brothers, deeply religious preachers, and sometimes even bold adventurers. All these individuals, however, were united by one idea which made them fight efficiently: honour. In Prussian Army Soldiers and the Seven Years' War, the different elements of the Prussian soldiers' concept of such honour are expertly analysed. The result is a nuanced, sophisticated, and much-needed psychological history of Frederick the Great's army.

The work concludes with a discussion of the most striking literary development of the time—the emergence of the Tamil novel.

Attracted to the rich ceremonial life and unique architecture of the New Mexico pueblos, many early-twentieth-century artists depicted Pueblo peoples, places, and culture in paintings. These artists’ encounters with Pueblo Indians fostered their awareness of Native political struggles and led them to join with Pueblo communities to champion Indian rights. In this book, art historian Sascha T. Scott examines the ways in which non-Pueblo and Pueblo artists advocated for American Indian cultures by confronting some of the cultural, legal, and political issues of the day. Scott closely examines the work of five diverse artists, exploring how their art was shaped by and helped to shape Indian politics. She places the art within the context of the interwar period, 1915–30, a time when federal Indian policy shifted away from forced assimilation and toward preservation of Native cultures. Through careful analysis of paintings by Ernest L. Blumenschein, John Sloan, Marsden Hartley, and Awa Tsireh (Alfonso Roybal), Scott shows how their depictions of thriving Pueblo life and rituals promoted cultural preservation and challenged the pervasive romanticizing theme of the “vanishing Indian.” Georgia O’Keeffe’s images of Pueblo dances, which connect abstraction with lived experience, testify to the legacy of these political and aesthetic transformations. Scott makes use of anthropology, history, and indigenous studies in her art historical narrative. She is one of the first scholars to address varied responses to issues of cultural preservation by aesthetically and culturally diverse artists, including Pueblo painters. Beautifully designed, this book features nearly sixty artworks reproduced in full color.

Focusing on the continental avant-gardes of the nineteen-tens and twenties, Sascha Bru's original and provocative book fundamentally revises our understanding of modernism's cultural and political history. Bru brings together a wide range of European experimental writers and provides detailed analyses of Italian futurist F.T. Marinetti, German Dadaist Richard Huelsenbeck and Belgian expressionist Paul van Ostaijen. Bru locates these writers within their exceptional democratic context and demonstrates how the modernist avant-garde, during the First World War and the upheavals that followed, found itself caught up in a series of 'states of exception'. In such states legal democratic institutions were bracketed and set aside, and 'literature' as an autonomous realm was temporarily suspended. The prevalence of anti-Semitism in Russia is well known, but the issue of race within the Jewish community has rarely been discussed explicitly. Combining ethnography with archival research, Jewish Russians: Upheavals in a Moscow Synagogue documents the changing face of the historically dominant Russian Jewish community in the mid-1990s. Sascha Goluboff focuses on a Moscow synagogue, now comprising individuals from radically different cultures and backgrounds, as a nexus from which to explore issues of identity creation and negotiation. Following the rapid rise of this transnational congregation—headed by a Western rabbi and consisting of Jews from Georgia and the mountains of Azerbaijan and Dagestan, along with Bukharan Jews from Central Asia—she evaluates the process that created this diverse gathering and offers an intimate sense of individual interactions in the context of the synagogue's congregation. Challenging earlier research claims that Russian and Jewish identities are mutually exclusive, Goluboff illustrates how post-Soviet Jews use Russian and Jewish ethnic labels and racial categories to describe themselves. Jews at the synagogue were constantly engaged in often contradictory but always culturally meaningful processes of identity formation. Ambivalent about emerging class distinctions, Georgian, Russian, Mountain, and Bukharan Jews evaluated one another based on each group's supposed success or failure in the new market economy. Goluboff argues that post-Soviet Jewry is based on perceived racial, class, and ethnic differences as they emerge within discourses of belonging to the Jewish people and the new Russian nation.

First, the explanatory power of the transaction cost theory, the resource-based view, the structural contingency approach, strategic choice theory, resource dependence theory, organisational ecology and principal agent theory to answer this question is surveyed. A deeper analysis using transaction cost theory, resource-based view and structural contingency approach is employed to develop three models of alliance structuring. Propositions related to the models are then tested on a sample of 101 strategic alliances in the ICT-industry. The findings suggest that there exist five influential factors: (1) the existence of alliance-specific investment by the partners, (2) the number of functional areas contained by the alliance, (3) a limited duration of the alliance, (4) the type of resources contributed by the partners, and (5) uncertainty of the tasks of the alliance. These factors are then recombined to form one integrated model. The success of this approach and the usefulness of such a modelling approach in general are discussed alongside future directions for research.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Hannover (Philosophisch Fakultaet), language: English, abstract: Men find themselves searching for their position in a world in which gender conceptions are drastically changed and redefined. The past discussions of women’s roles have left their male counterparts in an undefined, blank space. Modern popular culture, such as the movie industry, uses the elusiveness of modern gender conceptions to question the antique hierarchy of the white male protagonist as the hero and savior of the world. Walter Hollstein (Was vom Manne uebrig blieb - Krise und Zukunft des straken Geschlechts) and R.W. Connell (Men and the Boys) investigate in their works the shift within masculine identity. In their research they make an attempt to answer the questions whether men need to be heroes, what roles their bodies play and how childhood (in regards to the parent-child relationship) effects the individual conception of masculinity. Chris Holmlund explores The Masculinity as Multiple Masquearde as the reinforcement of hegemonic power relations. And in Hard Bodies – Hollywood Masculinity in the Reagan Era Susan Jefferson provides a detailed observation of the beginnings of openly emphasized masculine body images in the 1980s. The result, is the strive of movie directors to create protagonists who are the representation of such a lost, white, heroic individual. Does this description of a lost, masked, lonesome hero sound familiar? Indeed, Director Christopher Nolan shapes this character in his Dark Knight trilogy. But how did he manage to change a cultural icon from the 20th century, a man in purple tights, into the dark cynical postmodern anti-hero? My Bachelor thesis is: Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy cinematicly denounces Batman as the agent for the masculine crisis in modern Hollywood. In order to proof this thesis, my paper scientifically analyzes the effects used in the trilogy to highlight the change of masculine gender conception and where it fails to accomplish this goal. First of all, the paper starts with the cinematography, Nolan uses to reinforce the theme of an orphaned, masked, vigilante superhero questioning the hierarchy of society. Low key lighting reinforces the dark, cynical mood transmitted in the movie. The various ways of framing the shots that underline a hero who physically flies above the roofs of Gotham and metaphorically above the law. Speed and length of shots draw a clear distinction between Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman. Further more, the director's use of the mis-en-scene...
