Over the last decade, the topics of corruption and recovery of its proceeds have steadily risen in the international policy agenda, with the entry into force of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2005, the Arab Spring in 2011, and most recently a string of scandals in the financial sector. As states decide how best to respond to corruption and recover assets, the course of action most often discussed is criminal investigation and prosecution rather than private lawsuits. But individuals, organizations, and governments harmed by corruption are also entitled to recover lost assets and/or receive compensation for the damage suffered. To accomplish these goals of recovery and compensation, private or 'civil' actions are often a necessary and useful complement to criminal proceedings. This study explores how states can act as private litigants to bring lawsuits to recover assets lost to corruption.

Before the Arabo-Muslim conquest of 698, the Jews lived peacefully in North Africa with the other inhabitants of the region, except for a few brief periods of Roman and Byzantine rules. Under Islam, life was at times so good that some of the most important religious works since Babylon were written by North African Jewish scholars. Often, however, the Jews suffered because of the dhimmi status that the Muslims imposed upon them and through which they were discriminated against and even persecuted. Consequently, they welcomed the French colonization of their country from 1830 to 1962. Their enthusiastic adoption of everything French - among which the rejection of religion - came with a high price: the almost total loss of their Jewish identity, which caused them to feel so alienated in their native land that when the French left, so did they, mostly for Israel but also for other countries.

The digitization changes qualification demands of knowledge workers and opens new forms of collaboration. Solutions are required for enhancing acquisition and transfer of knowledge as well as training professional skills such as critical thinking, communication and cooperation. Peer Learning (PL) provides potentials for coping with these demands. However, it faces practical challenges as its reusability is low, collaboration expertise is required, and lacks leveraging digitization potentials. In contrast, the body of Collaboration Engineering (CE) literature, provides insights as it is an approach to designing collaborative work practices for high-value recurring tasks and deploying those to practitioners to execute for themselves without collaboration expertise. In this light, three research questions shape the structure of the thesis. First, the thesis shows an analysis of the application domain and develops a teaching-learning approach for creating conditions for PL in large scale lectures. Second, it proposes an approach to designing reference processes for enhancing PL. Third, it presents three studies that illustrate the design, instantiation and evaluation of reference processes for enhancing PL in the field. As methodological approach the thesis uses Design Science and develops, instantiates and evaluates re-usable reference processes for enhancing PL.

On 18 July 1943, one-hundred and twenty Jews were transported from the concentration camp at Drancy to the Lévitan furniture store building in the middle of Paris. These were the first detainees of three satellite camps (Lévitan, Austerlitz, Bassano) in Paris. Between July 1943 and August 1944, nearly eight hundred prisoners spent a few weeks to a year in one of these buildings, previously been used to store furniture, and were subjected to forced labor. Although the history of the persecution and deportation of France’s Jews is well known, the three Parisian satellite camps have been subjected to the silence of both memory and history. This lack of attention by the most authoritative voices on the subject can perhaps be explained by the absence of a collective memory or by the marginal status of the Parisian detainees - the spouses of Aryans, wives of prisoners of war, half-Jews. Still, the Parisian camps did, and continue to this day, lack simple and straightforward descriptions. This book is a much needed study of these camps and is witness to how, sixty years after the events, expressing this memory remains a complex, sometimes painful process, and speaking about it a struggle.
