USPOCO BOOKS is proud to present No. 3 in The Travvis Largent Chapbook Series: Queen and Stranger, by Sara Jeanine Smith. In Queen and Stranger, Sara Smith explores the inner and outer landscapes of being alive in the world-at once planetary and domestic, secular and sacred, these poems are spatial meditations on the broadest possibilities of heart, hearth, and home. Enter this book and feel what's there-a singular and authentic voice, expansive, but ever rooted in the rhizome of her matriarchal line. Tiny hymns of truth and grace, absent of artifice and pretention, take us beyond words and show us how to be at peace in the "nowhere quite tangible." This mother, granddaughter, sister, friend, and spiritual seeker is wise and alert to the nuanced rhythms of her home, which includes the "backwater" wilds that are always present, like a "swamp that once reigned and still creeps, unruly, into the margins of the subdivisions." Jamey Jones, Poet Laureate of Northwest Florida
Im no expert. I dont have a degree, just experience. I have a story to tellabout what feels like a lifetime spent being abused, not by one but two different men. Despite broken relationships and all types of abuses and a big confidence problem, I still stand. I want people to hear my story, not because of what I have been through but because of what I have come through. I am not a victim. I am a winner because I stand. After finding myself and staying loyal to me, I realized nobody is going to love me until I love myself first. I looked inside myself and saw just how beautiful and loveable I really am. Ive gone from wanting to hide, someone telling me to sit down and shut up, to God telling me to stand up and speak up. And by the grace of God, I can do just that.
One young family faces the adventure of a lifetime in Sara Elizabeth Smith's sprawling historical drama, Sanctuary on Saint Simons Island. The year is 1736, and Matthew and Emily Adam decide to move with their two young boys, Richard and William, from London to the wild lands of America. Led by the charismatic James E. Oglethorpe, the eager group of settlers soon finds a home on St. Simons Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. As Matthew and Emily attempt to carve out a new life for themselves in the midst of the Georgian outback, they soon befriend the Johnson family: Peter, a skilled carpenter, his wife, who becomes the children's beloved teacher, and their daughter, Jane. The two families forge a close bond as they face obstacles unique to their colony, the southernmost post of the British empire. Its position places it, and them, directly in the path of brutal Spanish enemies entrenched in St. Augustine, Florida, and Cuba. As time marches on and a new generation blossoms into adulthood, the road ahead remains fraught with peril as they discover the courage and sacrifice it takes to tame a wilderness.
Although film noir is traditionally associated with the mean streets of the Dark City, this volume explores the genre from a new angle, focusing on non-urban settings. Through detailed readings of more than 100 films set in suburbs, small towns, on the road, in the desert, borderlands and the vast, empty West, the author investigates the alienation expressed by film noir, pinpointing its motivation in the conflict between desires for escape, autonomy and freedom--and fears of loneliness, exile and dissolution. Through such films as Out of the Past, They Live by Night and A Touch of Evil, this critical study examines how film noir reflected radical changes in the physical and social landscapes of postwar America, defining the genre's contribution to the eternal debate between the values of individualism and community.
Brings political geography to life—explores key concepts, critical debates, and contemporary research in the field. Political geography is the study of how power struggles both shape and are shaped by the places in which they occur—the spatial nature of political power. Political Geography: A Critical Introduction helps students understand how power is related to space, place, and territory, illustrating how everyday life and the world of global conflict and nation-states are inextricably intertwined. This timely, engaging textbook weaves critical, postcolonial, and feminist narratives throughout its exploration of key concepts in the discipline. Accessible to students new to the field, this text offers critical approaches to political geography—including questions of gender, sexuality, race, and difference—and explains central political concepts such as citizenship, security, and territory in a geographic context. Case studies incorporate methodologies that illustrate how political geographers perform research, enabling students to develop a well-rounded critical approach rather than merely focusing on results. Chapters cover topics including the role of nationalism in shaping allegiances, the spatial aspects of social movements and urban politics, the relationship between international relations and security, the effects of non-human actors in politics, and more. Global in scope, this book: Highlights a diverse range of globally-oriented issues, such as global inequality, that demonstrate the need for critical political geography Demonstrates how critiques of political geography intersect with decolonial, feminist, and queer movements Covers the Eurocentric origins of many of the discipline’s key concepts Integrates advances in political geography theory and firsthand accounts of innovative research from rising scholars in the field Explores both intimate stories from everyday life and abstract concepts central to contemporary political geography Political Geography: A Critical Introduction is an ideal resource for students in political and feminist geography, as well as graduate students and researchers seeking an overview of the discipline.

Imagine a world in which the excess energy from one business would be used to heat another. Where buildings need less and less energy around the world, and where “regenerative” commercial buildings – ones that create more energy than they use – are being designed. A world in which environmentally sound products and processes would be more cost-effective than wasteful ones. A world in which corporations such as Costco, Nike, BP, and countless others are forming partnerships with environmental and social justice organizations to ensure better stewardship of the earth and better livelihoods in the developing world. Now, stop imagining – that world is already emerging. A revolution is underway in today’s organizations. As Peter Senge and his co-authors reveal in The Necessary Revolution, companies around the world are boldly leading the change from dead-end “business as usual” tactics to transformative strategies that are essential for creating a flourishing, sustainable world. There is a long way to go, but the era of denial has ended. Today’s most innovative leaders are recognizing that for the sake of our companies and our world, we must implement revolutionary—not just incremental—changes in the way we live and work. Brimming with inspiring stories from individuals and organizations tackling social and environmental problems around the globe, THE NECESSARY REVOLUTION reveals how ordinary people at every level are transforming their businesses and communities. By working collaboratively across boundaries, they are exploring and putting into place unprecedented solutions that move beyond just being “less bad” to creating pathways that will enable us to flourish in an increasingly interdependent world. Among the stories in these pages are the evolution of Sweden’s “Green Zone,” Alcoa’s water use reduction goals, GE’s ecoimagination initiative, and Seventh Generation’s decision to shift some of their advertising to youth-led social change programs. At its heart, THE NECESSARY REVOLUTION contains a wealth of strategies that individuals and organizations can use — specific tools and ways of thinking — to help us build the confidence and competence to respond effectively to the greatest challenge of our time. It is an essential guidebook for all of us who recognize the need to act and work together—now—to create a sustainable world, both for ourselves and for the generations to follow.
Intimate Geopolitics is the story of love and territory in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, in India's Jammu and Kashmir State. This book takes on global processes of "demographic fever dreams," which animate political movements, by understanding them in a deeply rooted local context and through the lives of ordinary people making decisions about love, babies, and the future.
This collection of poems, was written by a girl just trying to figure out her place in the world. She, just like many girls, found healing in writing some of her darkest emotions down, the words she could never say to her friends or parents. She also discovered her voice, who she would become as she grew up. I can't go back in time and give advise to my younger self, but I can make this dream a reality. "A Gift To The Girl I Once Was" is just that. A gift to teenage me, a way of coming full circle.
A gorgeously photographed love letter to copper pots, cast-iron skillets, and classic stoneware and the hard-won artistry that goes into them, by perhaps the only woman coppersmith in the country"--
I wrote this book for all those people around the world who are suffering from bullying, abuse, depression, or suicidal thoughts. The people who are so deep into depression that they think life is no longer worth living and believe nobody cares about them-or that people just want them dead-so they give up. They believe nobody can save them, and their only option is to either hurt others or commit suicide. I want to tell them they are wrong, because there will be someone who cares about them and wants them to keep on living. There will always be someone who can relate to their problem, and there will always be someone who can help them. It is my wish for everyone to live and look forward to the life that's ahead. I wrote my experiences in the back of the book so people will know I understand what they are going through. Sara Smith
