Designing for Older Adults: Case Studies, Methods, and Tools There are many products, tools, and technologies available that could provide support for older adults. However, their success requires that they are designed with older adults in mind by being aware of, and adhering to, design principles that recognize the needs, abilities, and preferences of diverse groups of older adults. Achieving good design is a process facilitated by seeing principles and guidelines in action. Design success requires understanding how to use the methods and tools available to evaluate initial ideas and prototypes. The goal of this book is to provide illustrative "case studies" of designing for older adults based on real design challenges faced by the researchers of the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE) over the past two decades. These case studies exemplify the use of human factors tools and user-centered design principles to understand the needs of older adults, identify where existing designs failed older users, and examine the effectiveness of design changes to better accommodate the abilities and preferences of the large and growing aging population. Features Reviews important design considerations for older adults and presents a framework for design Provides a series of real-world case studies to ground design principles and guidelines Offers a unique set and broad array of design challenges, from the design of healthcare devices, to computer systems and apps, to transportation systems and robots Gives an overview of emerging technologies, their potential benefits to older adults, anticipated design considerations, and new and emerging approaches to evaluating design Covers these topics with designers in mind, providing the most up-to-date recommendations based on the scientific literature but in an accessible, easy-to-understand, non-technical manner
Winner of the 2019 Richard M. Kalish Innovative Publication Book Award 2019 – Gerontological Society of America This new edition provides easily accessible and usable guidelines for practitioners in the design community for older adults. It includes an updated overview of the demographic characteristics of older adult populations and the scientific knowledge base of the aging process relevant to design. New chapters include Existing and Emerging Technologies, Work and Volunteering, Social Engagement, and Leisure Activities. Also included is basic information on user-centered design and specific recommendations for conducting research with older adults. Features Focuses on design for diverse groups of older adults Introduces the latest scientific advances, but is easily accessible to practitioners and students Offers an emphasis on existing and emerging technologies within everyday contexts and activities Includes many examples of everyday activities and contexts, as well as new chapters Presents a new conceptual model linking design principles across a broad range of topics
Current and emerging trends in the domains of health management and the work sector, the abundance of new consumer products pervading the marketplace, and the desires of many older adults to undertake new learning experiences means that older adults, like their younger counterparts, will need to continually engage in new learning and training. Thus
The first edition of Designing for Older Adults: Principles and Creative Human Factors Approaches broke ground as an easily accessible source of information, a primer on designing for older adults. In this second edition, the authors, as any good human factors practitioner would, have considered comments from readers. They have revised and updated
“ I applaud [this] book for providing a much needed overview of the entire “behavioral intervention pipeline.” It fills a unique niche in its coverage of key theoretical and methodological aspects as well as its case examples and professional development considerations, which makes the content accessible and practical for a broad audience.” -Marcia Ory, PhD From the Foreword This unique text provides comprehensive coverage of one of the most neglected—yet vitally important--areas of public health research: developing, evaluating, and implementing novel behavioral interventions in service and practice settings. Written for Masters- and Doctoral-level courses as well as novice and expert researchers in this area, the book examines the most critical issues surrounding this form of research in order to maximize the ability of intervention researchers to successfully implement current and future evidence-based protocols in practice settings. Expert contributors embrace key challenges —the complexities of health care delivery, disease management and prevention, rising costs, and changing population demographics—in shaping the push toward advancing more efficient and effective behavioral interventions and methodologies. Tackling numerous topics that have been neglected in traditional randomized trial handbooks, methodology texts, and books on dissemination and implementation science, the book addresses: ways to develop and advance an intervention, emerging hybrid trial designs - theories and new models for integrating behavioral interventions with implementation science - - recruitment and retention strategies for inclusion of diverse samples - research designs for different stages of intervention development - treatment fidelity models and measures - novel measurement and analytic strategies - cost analyses - selection of control groups - use of mixed methodology - ethics and informed consent - technology-based intervention approaches – professional considerations. Abundant case examples from successful behavioral intervention trials—both national and international--illustrate key concepts. Key Features: Includes examples of a wide range of interventions including individuals across the life span and of diverse communities and health systems Replete with case examples from successful behavioral intervention trials Presents the challenges of and strategies for advancing behavioral interventions for immediate use in practice Written by world-recognized expert authors and contributors Provides novel coverage of a great variety of important—but previously neglected--topics
This new guide explores the subject of human factors and the older adult primarily from an engineering psychology perspective, heavily grounded in today's scientific knowledge. A compilation of the authors' knowledge, research, and experience, the book shows readers how current understanding of age-related issues of perception, cognition, and movem
