At 36-years-old, Casey Scott appears to have it all: a booming career as a civil rights litigator, a loving husband, and two sweet young children. But she also has epilepsy, and her worsening seizures threaten to destroy the life she toiled to build. When her doctor says she is likely to die if her seizures are not controlled, Casey is at a crossroads: will she choose her career and lifelong aspirations, or her family and health? The decisions she makes affect her marriage, children, and future in ways she could never expect. Told by Casey and her husband, Uncontrollable is an emotional roller coaster that examines both what happens when the life we may be forced to live is not the life we planned to live, and the compromises we make to survive in the face of adversity.
The Orphan Gunner is an unconventional romance set in bomber command in Lincolnshire during the Second World War. Evelyn and Olive grew up together in the Canabolas Valley near Orange. They are in England at the outbreak of war: Evelyn as a pilot in the Air Transport Auxiliary, Olive in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. They’re joined by Evelyn’s brother Duncan, a novice gunner in Lancaster L-Love, flying bombing raids over Germany. The raids take their toll on the crew, and the two women are drawn into a plot involving disguise and mistaken identity, to get the exhausted Duncan out of service. The Orphan Gunner explores the seductions of passing, the licence granted by risk, and the selflessness – and selfishness – of sacrifice. The relationship between the two women is portrayed with subtlety and warmth, and an extraordinary sense of historical detail which brings its wartime setting vividly to life.

There were three possible reasons given for the disappearance of the two hikers on Mount Nyangani: the treacherous terrain and climate; the banditos armados; the unforgiving spirit called Chirikuzi. In David' case there was a fourth--that Clare might have killed him. Unable to remember exacly what happened on the mountain in Zimbabwe and trying to come to terms with the loss of her hand in the accident, Clare is taken home to Scotland where her large, loving, questioning, and uncomfortably acute family become almost unbearable. She had wanted David dead, but did that mean she had killed him? Her mother's High Church concern, Anni's sharp-tongued radicalism, santly Felicity's internal fury, and her deaf niece Alice's fascination with the prosthetic hand seem at first to distract from Clare's problems, until the aristocratic family's pieties pierce her cocoon of post-traumatic amnesia. Family resentments flare and fade, divisions fester and heal, and as clare uncovers buried fears, she comes to understand that the real question about the accident on Mount Nyangani is less what she has forgotten than why. Intricate in design, disturbing in its explorations of mind and spirit, and with a surprising twist at the end, Ancestral Truths employs a striking narrative voice to explore the shifting relations between belief and truth, love and desire, to reveal that beauty and danger walk hand in hand. Sara Maitland summons her knowledge of theology, mysticism, mathematics, and human nature to give this deeply perceptive novel its wit and cohesive richness. As Ms. Maitland's characters gradually recognize the inseparability of their strengths and weaknesses, the authof of Three Times Table raises her art to a new pitch of excitement and originality.

The first day of junior high school is exciting, and a little scary. In The One We Left Behind, the day is ruined because of the weird, new kid in town. Due to food allergies, William and his family are forcing ridiculous food restrictions on the ENTIRE seventh grade. No more pizza. No more peanut butter. Not even a candy bar. It's completely unfair! Evan, who already has enough to worry about-maintaining his "cool guy" status, his reputation as the best batter in his grade, and impressing the more intimidating students and teachers-is chosen first to sit alone in a room with this geek. What kind of kid can't sit in a school cafeteria? And why should it be Evan's problem? William becomes the most taunted and teased boy at school. Yet in that first week, Evan realizes he doesn't actually hate being stuck with William. No kid has EVER made Evan laugh so hard. William is also a whiz with baseball statistics, a fabulous prank puller, and a pretty good listener. But when the week is over, will Evan risk everything to befriend the school loser? It's not his fault that William is so dorky, pale and "different." Why should Evan help the "allergy kid" just because he was assigned to be his first "lunch buddy?" What is Evan supposed to do when the other kids pick on William, and the bullying starts to escalate? The One We Left Behind explores unlikely friendships, the angst of growing up, and the desire to be accepted for who you are. It reminds readers that decisions sometimes have consequences that can never be taken back. Editorial Reviews "In this debut YA novel, a teenager in 1995 finds himself torn between his social status and his growing friendship with the class nerd. Junior high is a new experience for 13-year-old Evan Roth in Columbus, Ohio. He’d been a popular athlete, but seventh grade overflows with tweens and teens from different elementary schools. Sadly, it looks as if he won’t make a good impression the first week, as he’s the assigned “lunch buddy” of the Cincinnati transfer student. William Nash has severe food allergies and must eat lunch in a classroom rather than the crowded cafeteria. Evan finds the situation alarming: “Lunch was one of the times when kids figured out who would be leaders, who would be followers, and who would be left with no friends at all.” But it turns out Evan and William have a lot in common, including their love of baseball. Being friends with William is an adjustment for Evan, as he and his fellow students learn how to use an “epi” in case the boy goes into anaphylactic shock. But William is worth it, and Evan enjoys hanging out with him. Yet Evan likes to be popular, too, which sometimes involves keeping his head down while others tease and openly mock William. Evan may have to choose—siding with insensitive bullies or a warm, funny, and generous guy. Each of Coven’s believable characters is chock-full of personality, as not all bullies are entirely apathetic and not every mother is as affectionate as Evan’s. William shows the most layers; he’s often unruffled when peers toss out insults (dubbing him Casper on account of his pale skin), but he’s devastated when convinced he’s a burden to his parents. Readers will learn a lot about allergies, especially in a chapterlong conversation on William’s medical problems and the shocking physical reactions he’s endured. Coven deftly taps into the teenage mind, as Evan and his male friends, when not mulling over girls or professional sports, play pranks and video games. This story serves lighthearted and profound moments in equal measure all the way to the unforgettable ending. Strong characters drive an enthusiastic adolescent tale that ably tackles serious issues." — Kirkus Reviews

Born the child of a homo and a hypochondriac (Okay, okay. Her dad’s not really a homosexual. He just acts like it. Her mom, however, really is a hypochondriac), Sara Barron never stood a chance of being normal. At age eleven, she starts writing porn (“He humped me wildly with his wiener”). At twelve, she gets mistaken for a trannie. The pre-op sort, no less. By seventeen, she's featured on the Jerry Springer Show. And that’s all before she hits New York. People Are Unappealing tells the strange, funny, and sometimes filthy stories of Sara Barron’s twisted suburban upbringing and deranged attempt at taking the Big Apple by storm–first as an actor (then a waiter), then a dancer (then a waiter), then a comic (then a waiter). It’s there that she meets the ex-boyfriend turned street clown. The silk pajama-clad poet. The OCD Xanax addict who refuses to have sex wearing any fewer than three condoms. Barron has a knack for attracting the unattractive. People Are Unappealing is her wickedly funny look at the dark side of humanity.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2019 in the subject Law - Civil / Private, Trade, Anti Trust Law, Business Law, grade: 68% (UK) 3.88 (USA), Northumbria University (Northumbria University Law school), course: International Trade Laws Masters, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the existing national and international regulatory approaches in detecting and preventing money laundering activities through virtual currencies. The objective of this evaluation is to determine if these current regulatory approaches require modifications to enhance their effectiveness. The evaluation of these different approaches will also be used to determine the most suitable regulatory approach for virtual currencies that acts as an effective Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regime. As stated previously, virtual currency regulation is a developing area of law. Hence, the majority of regulations discussed in this paper has not come into effect. As a result, the evaluation on the effectiveness of these regulations is only a projection based on academic sources. The recent reform on this area also means that there is a limited number of academics that evaluated these regulations. The development of technology in these past years has created a new financial medium known as the virtual currency market1. The use of virtual currencies has become wide-spread, due to the development of this financial market2. As a result, virtual currencies are in the process of becoming an international financial instrument that may hold significant economic value to the global financial market in the future. Regulations have only started responding to virtual currencies, due to their novelty. The instant growth of this financial instrument and its virtual element is bound to create unique regulatory challenges3. For this reason, this paper intends to study the different approaches regulating virtual currencies. These different regulatory approaches will be evaluated to ensure their effectiveness as Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regimes. Money laundering activities without the virtual element are already considered a global economic concern4. Virtual currencies have the ability of amplifying this issue, because they pose a serious threat to functioning of financial markets if they are employed in money laundering activities5. Jurisdictions only recently have comprehended the implications of this issue, which resulted in developing this new area of law that regulates virtual currencies. The emergence of virtual currency regulations provides a conducive field of study, that is relevant to the current changes undergoing the financial system.
