The Shattered Pearl is an account of the ten years that Sara Armstrong spent in Uganda, East Africa. It begins with an inside look at the Peace Corps in 1966 against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. Sara found herself the only black Peace Corps trainee in a group of 150. Once in Uganda, Sara taught science and math and traveled around East Africa. In April 1968, Sara married a Ugandan, resigned from the Peace Corps and began a new life. On January 25, 1971 Idi Amin Dada seized power and plunged this tropical paradise into a cycle of unimaginable terror and bloodshed. During the next six year, as this incredible tragedy unfolded, Sara moved freely around Uganda witnessing many things that were not reported in the press. She lived as a Ugandan but saw events from an American viewpoint including the historic raid on Entebbe Airport. The Shattered Pearl is a gripping, entertaining account of an incredible journey filled with adventure, love, joy and terror.

Young convention organizer Zanna Armstrong is managing her first large convention, for the Association of Group Practitioners in San Francisco. She looks around and allows herself a sigh of relief. Things are going well for opening day. She hastens to the Speakers Lounge to be sure all speakers have arrived. But at the door, she hears angry voices and stops outside…“You are nothing but a liar and a thief! You know both our names should have been on the report of our research, and both names on the abstract for that scientifi c meeting in February. I can't believe you stole my research, after all the yearswe've worked together.”A smooth, slightly accented voice responded, tone patronizing. “Now my dear friend, surely you recall that I did nearly half of the work on our research, and I needed the money much more than you did. My wife in Spain keeps me on an extremely short leash. You will have other projects. I've decided to keep this one for myself.”The other voice grew louder. “Have you completely lost your mind? By stealing all of the credit for our breakthrough, you robbed me of grant money to carry on my work, and the credit I deserve. You stabbed me in the back. I'm so furious I could kill you!”The blood drained from Zanna's face as she saw a key committee member storm past. Could the famous keynote speaker be a fraud? Was the murder threat a real one?

Women often try to be everything to everybody. Career, children, relationships, education make so many demands on their time they forget to take care of themselves. After Me, You Come First is a practical guide to making choices. It discusses working women, working moms, stay at home moms, single parenting, child care and the challenges to those who don't have children. It also addresses the increasing number of men and women in the Sandwich Generation who are caring for elderly parents while still raising their own families and working. It is a manual of self-care for everyone but especially directed to women. The book shows you how being selfish can be a good and even necessary thing. The authors Sara Armstrong and Lillian Redding bring a wealth of life experience to this subject. They have survived marriage, single parenting, loss, joy, pain, utter exhaustion and have learned how to say no without guilt.
Do you dream of seeing a honey badger in the wild? Roasting a turducken next Thanksgiving? Mastering Cockney rhyming slang? Wearing lederhosen? Drinking banana wine in the Canary Islands? Then this book is for you. (But if you're content instead to stay home and binge watch Netflix, then this book is also for you.) Not your typical bucket list book, The Bucket/F*ck It List lets you check off bucket, f*ck it, or done it for each of the 3,669 items, depending on whether you intend to do it, couldn't care less about it, or have already accomplished it. Regardless of where you lie on the FOMO/JOMO (fear of missing out/joy of missing out) spectrum, checking things off just feels good. Use this as a travel guide to the world's most exotic festivals and quirkiest museums or as social media fodder (don't forget to take lots of selfies).
