A comprehensive new reading of Petrarch's lyric collection known as the Canzoniere or Rime sparse, the work that stands at the origins of the dominant tradition of European Renaissance poetry. Unlike many other considerations of Petrarch's poetry, this study takes into account through close reading the vast majority of the 366 poems included in the collection. At the same time it adopts a range of intertextual perspectives. It emphasizes the position of the Rime within Petrarch's own varied literary corpus and in relation to his precursors both classical and vernacular. New insights emerge into his transgressions and evasions of the primary Ovidian myth in the collection, into his engagement with Dante, and into his adaptation of the motifs of the romance quest. Sturm-Maddox also explores Petrarch's creation of a personal myth of poetic origins, one centered in Valchiusa as the locus of an amorous epiphany, and in the shade of the laurel as the locus of the production of Rime sparse. Ample notes complement the text, and English translations translations of the Italian poetry are included

For many years the inhabitants of Olevano Sul Tusciano, an inland village in the province of Salerno, have replaced the expression “Do not think that I am rich”, with the sentence “Don’t think I am coming from Wilmington”. During the years of the Great Migration, a good many Olevanese left their village to emigrate to the United States, and chose Wilmington, a wealthy town in Delaware, as their favourite destination. Not far from Philadelphia, in the early years of 20th century, Wilmington cornered Italian low cost labor. Its Little Italy hosted unskilled laborers mainly from the South of Italy, poor but highly motivated by a strong desire of redemption. Many of them did succeed. This book was born from the collaboration and enthusiasm of their descendants, who still live in Wilmington, and of their relatives who live in Olevano. Specialized public resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) are increasingly common and diverse--from protection order courts and dedicated domestic violence units in police precincts to a vast network of community-based emergency shelters and counseling services. Yet little consensus exists regarding which resources actually work to reduce violence and help survivors lead the lives they would like to live. This book is an account of these resources and IPV survivors' experiences with them in three communities in the United States. Through detailed observations of services such as court procedures, public benefits processes, and community-based IPV programs as well as in-depth interviews with dozens of IPV survivors and practitioners, Shoener describes how our current institutional response to IPV is often not useful--and sometimes quite harmful--for IPV survivors with the least material, social, and cultural capital to spare. For these women, as the interviews vividly record, IPV has long-term economic and social consequences, disrupting career paths and creating social isolation.

Nonwhite and white, rich and poor, born to an unwed mother or weathering divorce, over half of all children in the current generation will live in a single-parent family--and these children simply will not fare as well as their peers who live with both parents. This is the clear and urgent message of this powerful book. Based on four national surveys and drawing on more than a decade of research, Growing Up with a Single Parent sharply demonstrates the connection between family structure and a child's prospects for success. What are the chances that the child of a single parent will graduate from high school, go on to college, find and keep a job? Will she become a teenage mother? Will he be out of school and out of work? These are the questions the authors pursue across the spectrum of race, gender, and class. Children whose parents live apart, the authors find, are twice as likely to drop out of high school as those in two-parent families, one and a half times as likely to be idle in young adulthood, twice as likely to become single parents themselves. This study shows how divorce--particularly an attendant drop in income, parental involvement, and access to community resources--diminishes children's chances for well-being. The authors provide answers to other practical questions that many single parents may ask: Does the gender of the child or the custodial parent affect these outcomes? Does having a stepparent, a grandmother, or a nonmarital partner in the household help or hurt? Do children who stay in the same community after divorce fare better? Their data reveal that some of the advantages often associated with being white are really a function of family structure, and that some of the advantages associated with having educated parents evaporate when those parents separate. In a concluding chapter, McLanahan and Sandefur offer clear recommendations for rethinking our current policies. Single parents are here to stay, and their worsening situation is tearing at the fabric of our society. It is imperative, the authors show, that we shift more of the costs of raising children from mothers to fathers and from parents to society at large. Likewise, we must develop universal assistance programs that benefit low-income two-parent families as well as single mothers. Startling in its findings and trenchant in its analysis, Growing Up with a Single Parent will serve to inform both the personal decisions and governmental policies that affect our children's--and our nation's--future.

Aracoeli (1982) was the last novel written by Elsa Morante (1912-85), one of the most significant Italian writers of the twentieth century. The journey, both geographical and memorial, of a homosexual son in search of his dead mother is a first-person narrative that has puzzled many critics for its darkness and despair. By combining scholars from different disciplines and cultural traditions, this volume re-evaluates the esthetical and theoretical complexity of Morante's novel and argues that it engages with crucial philosophical and epistemological questions in an original and profound way. Contributors explore the manifold tensions staged by the novel in connection with contemporary philosophical discourse (from feminist/queer to political theory to psycho-analysis) and authors (such as Emilio Gadda, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Pedro Almodovar). The Power of Disturbance shows that by creating a 'hallucinatory' representation of the relationship between mother and child, Aracoeli questions the classical distinction between subject and object, and proposes an altogether new and subversive kind of writing. Manuele Gragnolati teaches Italian literature at Oxford University, where he is a Fellow of Somerville College. Sara Fortuna teaches philosophy of language at the Universita Guglielmo Marconi in Rome.
