This book provides a tutorial introduction to modern techniques for representing and reasoning about qualitative preferences with respect to a set of alternatives. The syntax and semantics of several languages for representing preference languages, including CP-nets, TCP-nets, CI-nets, and CP-theories, are reviewed. Some key problems in reasoning about preferences are introduced, including determining whether one alternative is preferred to another, or whether they are equivalent, with respect to a given set of preferences. These tasks can be reduced to model checking in temporal logic. Specifically, an induced preference graph that represents a given set of preferences can be efficiently encoded using a Kripke Structure for Computational Tree Logic (CTL). One can translate preference queries with respect to a set of preferences into an equivalent set of formulae in CTL, such that the CTL formula is satisfied whenever the preference query holds. This allows us to use a model checker to reason about preferences, i.e., answer preference queries, and to obtain a justification as to why a preference query is satisfied (or not) with respect to a set of preferences. This book defines the notions of the equivalence of two sets of preferences, including what it means for one set of preferences to subsume another, and shows how to answer preferential equivalence and subsumption queries using model checking. Furthermore, this book demontrates how to generate alternatives ordered by preference, along with providing ways to deal with inconsistent preference specifications. A description of CRISNER—an open source software implementation of the model checking approach to qualitative preference reasoning in CP-nets, TCP-nets, and CP-theories is included, as well as examples illustrating its use.

Bioluminescence, the “cold living light” or the “cold fire of the sea,” is extremely common in all oceans at all depths. However, this phenomenon is nearly absent in freshwater, with the exception of a freshwater limpet. More than 75% of deep-sea creatures have been reported to produce their own light. The luminescent marine plankton such as dinoflagellate, radiolarians, jellyfish, comb jellies, annelids, copepods, ostracods, mysids, amphipods, euphausiids, and tunicates form an important component in the marine food chain. Research on luminescent marine plankton is gaining momentum owing to its importance in life science research and medicine. The glowing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) extracted from the North Pacific jellyfish, Aqueorea victoria (for which the Japanese biologist, Osamu Shimonmura won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008) has helped shed light on key processes such as the spread of cancer, the development of brain cells, the growth of bacteria, damage to cells by Alzheimer's disease, and the development of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Therefore, it is difficult to underscore the importance of bioluminescence and the organisms associated with this phenomenon. Bioluminescent Marine Plankton is a unique reference that attempts to provide answers to questions about bioluminescence. The first of its kind, this book attempts to answer questions on the subject with a focus on planktonic organisms. 12 chapters provide information about the chemistry of bioluminescence, types of bioluminescent displays, distribution of bioluminescence among marine plankton, ecological functions and utility of planktonic bioluminescence. Like jellyfish, scorpions, and snakes, several species of catfish have been reported to be venomous with their painful stings. The major groups of persons at risk for catfish envenomation are fishermen and water sports participants. It is estimated that 1625 species of catfish are venomous although this has been studied for only 158 species. While some species of catfish cause mild envenomation, several species have been reported to cause severe envenomation associated with secondary bacterial infections. The symptoms related to catfish envenomation include local intense pain, edema, erythema, paleness, and cutaneous necrosis. Notable species of catfish causing serious envenomations include the Arabian Gulf catfish (Arius thalassinus), Carolina madtom (Noturus furiosus), and Oriental catfish (Plotosus lineatus). This manual is designed for the use of hydrogen as a fuel in the fuel cells. The turn of the century has seen a realization of moving towards clean energy due to a variety of considerations ranging from global warming, anxiety to living in a healthy atmosphere, depletion of fossil fuels, oil slick in Gulf of Mexico resulting in disasters and so forth. Innumerable debates in the literature has led to the identification of hydrogen as the safest and efficient fuel over the other available fuels. This fuel can be used in two ways: a) direct combustion like gasoline and b) fuel cells. The use of it by the first method requires pure oxygen to be used for combustion; it is an expensive method involving oxygen storage and transportation. If oxygen is substituted by air in the combustion, it produces nitrogen oxides that are defying the definition of clean energy. The other method is to use it as a fuel cell for easy emission free transportation. Here chemical energy is converted to electrical energy directly in a fuel cell. To illustrate principles of related fuel cells, methanol and borohydride fuel cells are included in this manual. The nine experiments described here are designed for illustrating the concepts for the beginners and those motivated to go for clean energy.DVD displays the actual experimental set up and measurement procedures for Hydrogen safety; Fuel value measurement; Gaseous properties of hydrogen; Proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly and Dissolved methanol fuel cell.
