Sang Sun Lee was a refugee in South Korea during the Korean War. He fled North Korea, leaving behind his wife, children, and parents. During a narrow escape from death, he made a promise to God in exchange for his life. Lee was true to his promise for the rest of his life. From building churches to building a business, being a true servant of God guided all his decisions and actions. Lee eventually became a businessperson and went from poverty to wealth and back again as he gave generously, and sometimes naively, to those who asked him for help. He was instrumental in the planting of numerous churches over the years and supported pastors and missionaries unfailingly, often putting their needs ahead of those of his own family. Throughout this time, Lee’s steadfast faith in God carried him and his family through every challenge and setback. Later in life, Lee was interviewed of his experiences, and that was published in an eight-month weekly series in The Christian Times. His daughter, Dr. Stephanie Chung, gathered her father’s articles to share his story and honour his life.

A Representation of Nationhood in the Museum examines how the National Museum of Korea, as a national repository of material culture and the state’s premier exhibition facility, has shaped and been shaped by Korean nationalism. Exploring the processes by which the museum has discovered and interpreted material culture, using concepts of ethnic nationalism in the historical and political contexts of South Korean society, the book analyses how this nationalist interpretation has regulated South Koreans’ understanding of their material culture. Issues considered include: cultural and political relations with China; Japanese colonial rule, cultural imperialism and its legacy; the division of Korea since 1945; the Korean War and nation building since liberation in 1945; and domestic political upheavals, including military coups in 1961 and in 1979. Demonstrating that authoritarian regimes’ emphasis on the promotion of national unity drove national museums to establish national identity through material culture, Jang argues that international political and diplomatic factors also affect the process of the formation of national identity in a specific political context. Concerning itself with issues such as the relationship between politics and identity, museums and authoritarian regimes, this book should be essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in museum studies, nationalism studies, Asian studies and history departments.

The paper examines the remarkable growth of the South Korean economy from the early 1960s to the early 2000s. This paper provides an overview of South Korea’s industrial development process, with a particular emphasis on the heavy and chemical industries’ drive in the 1970s and the impact of educational expansion and investment on technological capabilities. The paper shows how this economic growth was primarily due to an export- oriented industrialization strategy and consistent upgrades to industrial infrastructure and systems to remain competitive in the global market. One of the most important policies pursued by the government was the development of the country's human potential. The paper argues that without this investment, it would have been impossible for South Korea to emerge as one of the most innovative economies in the world. These achievements are attributable to the vision of the political leadership, a supportive government, the hard work of entrepreneurs and others who contributed their valuable human resources. It also examines the 1997 foreign exchange crisis, its causes, and impact on South Korea, as well as the lessons learned, and new policies enacted in its aftermath. The rapid build-up of industrial capabilities was the result of a substantial reduction in investment risks with comprehensive government support for financing, infrastructure, technology and manpower development. However, this also made South Korea's large multi-national industrial companies (chaebols) reckless in fiscal policies. Furthermore, a concentration of economic power and chaebol's putting family interests first — remains a cause of serious socio-political tension in South Korea. The paper concludes that South Korea’s industrial development since the early 1960s include: strong political leadership with vision and a strong commitment to economic development; industrial policy with a focus on promoting heavy and chemical industries; state-chaebol development partnership; and huge investment in human capital and technological capabilities.

In 1916, a group of Korean farmers and their children gathered to watch a film depicting the enthronement of the Japanese emperor. For this screening, a unit of the colonial government’s news agency brought a projector and generator by train to their remote rural town. Before the formation of commercial moviegoing culture for colonial audiences in rural Korean towns, many films were sent to such towns and villages as propaganda. The colonial authorities, as well as later South Korean postcolonial state authorities, saw film as the most effective medium for disseminating their political messages. In Cine-Mobility, Han Sang Kim argues that the force of propaganda films in Korea was derived primarily not from their messages but from the new mobility of the viewing position. From the first film shot in Korea in 1901 through early internet screen cultures in late 1990s South Korea, Cine-Mobility explores the association between cinematic media and transportation mobility, not only in diverse and discrete forms such as railroads, motorways, automobiles, automation, and digital technologies, but also in connection with the newly established rules and restrictions and the new culture of mobility, including changes in gender dynamics, that accompanied it.

This volume contains papers presented at the 20th International Conference on Genome Informatics (GIW 2009) held at the Pacifico Yokohama, Japan from December 14 to 16, 2009. The GIW Series provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of original research papers on all aspects of bioinformatics, computational biology and systems biology. Its scope includes biological sequence analysis, protein structure prediction, genetic regulatory networks, bioinformatic algorithms, comparative genomics, and biomolecular data integration and analysis. Boasting a history of 20 years, GIW is the longest-running international bioinformatics conference. A total of 18 contributed papers were selected for presentation at GIW 2009 and for inclusion in this book. In addition, this book contains abstracts from the five invited speakers: Sean Eddy (HHMI's Janelia Farm, USA), Minoru Kanehisa (Kyoto University, Japan), Sang Yup Lee (KAIST, Korea), Hideyuki Okano (Keio University, Japan) and Mark Ragan (University of Queensland, Australia).

Selection of the optimal recovery method is significantly influenced by economic issues in today's oil and gas markets. Consequently, the development of cost-effective technologies, which bring maximum oil recovery, is the main interest in today's petroleum research communities. Theory and Practice in Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery provides the fundamentals, latest research and creditable field applications. Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) is potentially a low-priced and eco-friendly technique in which different microorganisms and their metabolic products are implemented to recover the remaining oil in the reservoir. Despite drastic advantages of MEOR technology, it is still not fully supported in the industry due to lack of knowledge on microbial activities and their complexity of the process. Historians of late premodern Korea have tended to regard it as a hermit kingdom, isolated from its neighbours and the wider world. In fact, as Ro argues in this book, Korean intellectuals were heavily influenced by both Chinese Neo-Confucianism and the European Enlightenment in the late 18th and 19th centuries. In the late Choson period the regime felt threatened by the new, more empirical, approaches to knowledge emerging from both the East and the West. For this reason many Korean intellectuals felt it necessary to work in the shadows and formed secret societies for the study of nature. Because of the secrecy of these societies, much of their work has remained unknown even in Korea until recent years. Ho looks at the work of these intellectuals and analyses the impact their thinking and experimentation had on knowledge production in Korea. A fascinating insight into the largely overlooked story of how globalization affected intellectual life in Korea before the 20th century. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of Korean history and of Asian intellectual history more broadly.

Among other topics discussed are the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for surfactant-covered droplets; biological suspensions such as blood; used in conjunction with the suppression of coalescence for investigating the rheology of colloids and microvasculature blood flow.
