The sounds of sirens mingled with stranger's worried voices as she struggled to make sense of the scene around her. A shoe -- her shoe -- lay in the intersection and raindrops clung to her fingertips before falling away. She felt a strong pair of arms embracing her, holding her as the sirens grew closer. She couldn't see his face, but she knew he was the one she had been running from when she veered in front of that car. Who was he, really? The mysterious benefactor who had been appearing and then disappointingly disappearing through most of her life...who was he? She wanted to turn to look him in the eye but she couldn't, and the rain fell softly now. Everything seemed to be slowing down. The sirens faded and she reluctantly closed her eyes, not sure whether she'd ever open them again. Rain is a fictional story of reflection in which memories return to a coma patient as she remembers childhood challenges and setbacks, the joys of starting a family of her own, and the heart-breaking twists and turns of a too-short life. It is the story of one girl's journey through an overburdened system that largely fails her, of her resilience and refusal to give up, and her discovery that family really is forever.

Shell shock was the signature injury of the First World War. Military doctors during the conflict on the Western Front observed and personally experienced psychiatric states they had never witnessed before. This text reviews the published medical literature of that era which graphically detailed the clinical states of hysteria (conversion disorder) and neurasthenia (anxiety and PTSD). Medical officers at the front evolved pragmatic medicinal, cognitive and behavioural interventions, still practised today, though never scientifically proven to be effective. The doctors, like their patients, endured numerous horrors at the front, which were, for many, to influence their post-war personal and professional lives. Much of what they wrote was forgotten and deserves reconsideration. Neuropsychiatry was founded in the shell craters of Flanders.

Omissions in Tort Law

Whether or not a person has a positive duty to prevent harm is both a complex and fundamental question in English tort law. There is a distinction drawn between doing harm and failing to prevent it, between acts and omissions. However, there are instances in which a failure to act can have legal consequences. Omissions in Tort Law analyses the justification for the lack of a general positive duty to prevent harm and argues that it is not best understood in terms of the distinction between acts and omissions, but in terms of making things worse versus not making things better. It considers when the law will and should impose duties to improve another's position. It provides novel conceptual analyses of the basic concepts that inform the imposition of positive duties, such as creation of risk, interfering with aid, assuming responsibility, controlling a source of risk, and the normative considerations that underpin them. In addition, it addresses the ways in which the law differentiates between actively causing harm and failing to protect from harm, and makes recommendations as to how the law could be improved. Exploring the ways in which conceptions of morality intersect with legal obligations, Omissions in Tort Law offers a detailed and nuanced perspective on omissions and positive duties, including scope, justification, and potential areas for change.
