Rafael Guillen's poems are infused with the land and the people of Andalusia. He lays before us all the harshness and beauty of his country - the calm seashore and the violent revolutions, the wheat fields and the famine, the children and the laborers suffering through days like hot coals. In light of this history, Guillen gives his words sharp edges tinged with a certain tender grief. A quiet force builds up behind the complex imagery and compact language as Guillen reflects on coming of age in Civil War Spain and situations of love, life, death, and faith in modern-day Granada, Paris, and the United States. Sandy McKinney, working closely with Guillen, accurately captures the unusual syntax and emotional tone of the work of this important Spanish poet. Included here is McKinney's interview with the poet where Guillen explains his connection to the tradition of Andalusian poetry, a proud literary tradition filled with a sensual delight in the beauty of particular words, in their sound as well as their significance.
Mountains, streams, and strong families are the characteristics of Bakersville and the small towns that surround it in northern Mitchell County. For much of human history, people lived in small, rural trade centers where they knew everyone and helped each other, and families were the most important part of life. Bakersville was no exception. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and such places have faded from view. There may be an empty store, post office, or school, but there is little else in evidence of the vitality and lives of earlier citizens. Kona, Clarissa, Hawk, Tipton Hill, Buladean, Ledger, Bandana, and others had few economic opportunities left. Tobacco farming dissolved, factories moved abroad, mines closed, and most of the World War II generation and its descendants left for the military, college, and greener pastures. With smaller populations, all those public places were consolidated with others. It is those who settled and remained that are honored here.
When Del Rickman leaves the FBI, he can think of no better place to start his new life than Crystal Creek, Texas. Years ago he worked a kidnapping case there, and he never forgot the town or the people. But he’s surprised to discover that his new career and his attraction to one of the locals—a woman he met on that first trip a lifetime ago—has put him in opposition to his new neighbors!
Traces the origins and developments of black Baptist interest in the Southern states and their efforts to evangelize West Africa in particular, and also considers this activity as an example of the use of religious themes by black Americans in order to give their disadvantaged conditions meanings and to suggest avenues and principles for their own liberation. The American Indians have lost much of their land over the years, but their legacy is evident in the many places around the United States that have Indian names. Countless placenames have, however, been corrupted over time, and numerous placenames have similar spellings but different meanings. This reference work is a reprint in one combined volume of the two-volume set published by McFarland in 2003 and 2005. Volume One covers the name origins and histories of cities, towns and villages in the United States that have Indian names. It is arranged alphabetically by state, then alphabetically by city, town or village name. Additional data include population figures and county names. Probable Indian placenames with no certain origin also receive entries, and as much history as possible is provided about those locations. Volume Two covers more than 1400 rivers, lakes, mountains and other natural features in the United States with Indian names. It is arranged by state, and then alphabetically by natural feature. Counties are provided for most entries, with multiple counties listed for some entries where appropriate. In addition to name origins and meanings, geophysical data such as the heights of mountains and lengths of waterways are indicated.
Surfing culture began in Portland, Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Pacific City in the early 1960s. Influenced by surf music and a few California surfers, a handful of skin divers and adolescent boys yearned to engage in the sport. In the beginning, surfing was illegal along the beachfronts of Seaside and Cannon Beach. Answering the siren call, locals took to the beaches, while others from around Oregon, Washington, and California found their way to isolated spots along the Northern Oregon coast. The early surfers were not intimidated by their lack of knowledge, poor equipment, or the unpredictable waves. Instead, surfing caught on in the cold waters of Oregon. Experience the early days of Oregon surfing through the pioneer surfers' stories and vintage photographs.

The strange and beautiful story within ORBS: The Energy Around Us started with a family trip to the mystical vortex of Sedona, Arizona. One interesting vacation photo stirred my curiosity and heightened my awareness to the presence of the unknown. For me, this story started decades ago, and the proof is in the family photos that were uncovered in our attic just recently. As this journey unfolded, I realized the perfectly round dots of light and beautifully heart-shaped figures on my photos were not simply tricks of light but something much more meaningful and intentional. And for you, this story is also as old as the snapshots you have. Orbs – those living, responsive balls of light we can mostly see as circles on photographs – are all around us. They point us the way to go and remind us of what is always important. Orbs: The Energy Around Us is a book about mystery, discovery and awareness. It brings us together in community and reminds us of the unique place in the Universe that each of us holds.
“The ability of people to capture orbs on photographs is a mystery. We ask ourselves big questions. What are orbs? Why can some people photograph orbs while others can not? This book, with its variety of orb photos, is a perfect gift from Sandy Mayberry and, quite possibly, evidence of energy forms in our universe attempting to communicate with us—the unseen made visible! How perfect that we can now expand our awareness in such kind and gentle ways” (Darlynn Bowman, PhD, CMHt, Sedona, Arizona).
This new edition of Digital Preservation in Libraries, Archives, and Museums is the most current, complete guide to digital preservation available today. For administrators and practitioners alike, the information in this book is presented readably, focusing on management issues and best practices. Although this book addresses technology, it is not solely focused on technology. After all, technology changes and digital preservation is aimed for the long term. This is not a how-to book giving step-by-step processes for certain materials in a given kind of system. Instead, it addresses a broad group of resources that could be housed in any number of digital preservation systems. Finally, this book is about “things (not technology; not how-to; not theory) I wish I knew before I got started.” Digital preservation is concerned with the life cycle of the digital object in a robust and all-inclusive way. Many Europeans and some North Americans may refer to digital curation to mean the same thing, taking digital preservation to be the very limited steps and processes needed to insure access over the long term. The authors take digital preservation in the broadest sense of the term: looking at all aspects of curating and preserving digital content for long term access. The book is divided into four part: 1.Situating Digital Preservation, 2.Management Aspects, 3.Technology Aspects, and 4.Content-Related Aspects. Digital Preservation will answer questions that you might not have even known you had, leading to more successful digital preservation initiatives.
