In "From the Heart", Sandy Clark tells the story of his headline-grabbing career in football as a striker, manager, coach and now much-respected pundit. From his early days with his hometown team Airdrie, Sandy Clark was a prolific scorer and notched more than 100 goals for the Diamonds. He caught the eye of both Sir Alex Ferguson and Celtic who tried to prise him away and was later named PFA Player of the Year before heading south to West Ham to star alongside Trevor Brooking, Billy Bonds and Tony Cottee. Sandy reveals why he then returned to Rangers and how he helped a young Ally McCoist through those difficult early days, before they went on to help the Light Blues to Skol Cup glory. He also reveals the pain and agony of the 1985-86 season when, with Hearts, he missed out on a league and Scottish Cup double. And he relives his Tynecastle memories, from his derby day glories to Wallace Mercer asking him to value all the Hibs players ahead of his controversial attempt to buy their capital rivals.Sandy speaks openly about his own managerial stint at Tynecastle, where he had to controversially sack Justin Fashanu and for the first time he talks about his heartbreak when Chris Robinson showed him the door and why he later turned down the chance to manage Hearts for a second spell. Clark tells all from his time at St Johnstone, where he led them to third spot, a cup final and back into Europe, where they took on the might of Monaco and also lifts the lid on the drugs nightmare with George O'Boyle and Kevin Thomas and how he believes it led to his eventual sacking. He went on to work under Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl at Dunfermline, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen and says why he believes an Aberdeen legend was behind their controversial Pittodrie departure. Controversial, honest and full of brand new anecdotes, "From the Heart" is an unmissable football story.

A Parliamentarian described his feelings towards Charlotte de La Trémoïlle when he wrote in the journal the Parliamentary Scout “three women ruined the Kingdom Eve, The Queen and the Countess of Derby”. This historical biography uses the letters found in the Chateau at Thouars and preserved in the French National Archive in Paris to piece together an account of her ideas and actions. Eyewitness writings are used to describe her activities during the siege by Parliamentary forces of the Royalist Lathom House. Following the end of the siege, she was exiled to the Isle of Man. A Huguenot, Charlotte lived at a time of religious and political upheaval in both France and England. She was related by birth and marriage to European royalty and aristocracy. She was the only woman sequestered by the Parliament of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II promised her the position of Governess to his children.
This Second Edition of The Psychiatry of Palliative Medicine remains a practical and pragmatic distillation of the psychiatry relevant to the terminally ill. Revised throughout and greatly expanded by the addition of two entirely new chapters, it reviews the major psychiatric syndromes encountered in palliative care - depression, anxiety, delirium - and examines psychopharmacological and psychological interventions in detail. It succinctly considers the psychiatric aspects of pain, sleep, cognitive impairment, terminal neurodegenerative diseases, sedation, artificial feeding and euthanasia. The dying, chronically ill psychiatric patient is also discussed. The author has drawn on his great experience in both consultation-liaison psychiatry and palliative medicine to produce an essential, evidence-based guide for all healthcare professionals involved in palliative care. These include consultants and senior nurses, as well as psychiatrists, especially consultation-liaison psychiatrists, and trainees. 'I find this an immensely sympathetic book, beautifully written. It is a testimony to the summation of specialist psychiatric knowledge, broad scholarship and a rich personal practice in bedside palliation.' From the Foreword by Ian Maddocks Reviews of the first edition: '...a relevant, highly readable and reasonably priced book which will be of interest to all, whether from a psychiatric or palliative care background, who seek to improve the care of dying patients INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOGERIATRICS 'Practical, scientifically based and scholarly, addressing a comprehensive set of common and important clinical problems in palliative care. A powerful and moving YA story about two brothers, one of whom goes off to fight in World War One. It’s 1917 and Jack enlists. And although 13-year-old Tom is envious of his elder brother, he soon changes his mind as the reality of war becomes more apparent. We follow Jack’s story through his letters home and through the eyes of his younger brother. Tom writes about life at home in New Zealand: living with Mum and their young sister, Amy, learning to hunt with his uncle, getting a puppy and learning to knit...for the war effort. Jack writes of his first-hand experience in Trentham, the troop ship, Britain, France, the Battle of Messines and finally, Passchendaele. Sadly the story ends with Jack being killed at Passchendaele along with hundreds of other Kiwis. (Of the 180 soldiers in the 2nd Otago Division, 148 lost their lives in one day in New Zealand’s worst ever military disaster.) When Our Jack Went to War is a fictional account of a real life tragedy, based on the author’s research into the death of her own great uncle, who died in 1917. The NZ Post Award-winning Sandy Mckay ably conveys how war affects everyone – it’s a superb meditation on war and its devastating effect on soldiers and their families.
• Presents the positive results of the author’s two-year clinical trial of spiritual healing (energy medicine) involving 200 hospital patients • Shares intriguing evidence from case studies as well as other research projects that negate the myth that energy healing is only a placebo • Explores how spiritual healing not only led to improved outcomes for patients, but also faster recovery times and thus less time spent in hospitals Seven years after qualifying to become a spiritual healer, Sandy Edwards approached a consultant gastroenterologist at a city hospital and offered to give healing to his patients as a volunteer. She provided healing sessions alongside conventional medical treatments, documenting the effects in a scientific way, and the doctor was surprised at the overwhelmingly positive outcomes. In partnership with the University of Birmingham, as well as a national grant to fund the study, Sandy instigated the largest clinical research trial of spiritual healing in the world. Revealing the outstanding results of this two-year medical trial, which involved 200 chronically ill hospital patients, Sandy demonstrates that spiritual healing (energy medicine) can support the healing process of a patient, whether they are in pain, sick, stressed, or depressed. In many cases, these patients had been suffering for a long time with little hope of recovery. Yet they improved substantially in numerous ways after receiving just five 20-minute healing sessions. Illustrating how spiritual healing helps a patient from pain and distress through to recovery, Sandy shares intriguing evidence from case studies as well as other research projects that negate the myth that energy healing is only a placebo. She offers statements from medical professionals who have witnessed the results firsthand and also details a quick technique to relieve pain that readers can apply in their own lives. Showing how spiritual healing not only led to improved outcomes for patients, but also faster recovery times and thus less time spent in hospitals, Sandy moves us one step closer to widespread acceptance for spiritual healing and energy medicine.
Counseling Children and Adolescents in Schools' is a text and workbook designed to help aspiring school practitioners (school psychologists, counsellors, and social workers) gain the necessary theoretical background and skill set to work effectively with youths in schools.
This formative history takes a new look at a dramatic conflict-the war on the Detroit frontier in 1812-13. Powerful key players (Procter, Tecumseh and Brock), their disparate war aims, and the "all or nothing" character of the campaigns they waged still seem larger than life. Yet Sandy Antal's careful reconstruction of Native and national aspiration, vested colonial interest, and territorial aggression, reveals motives and expedients that were as often mundane as heroic. A Wampum Denied reassesses the much-maligned career of Henry Procter, commander of the British forces, traces the Canadian/British/Native side of the conflict (amid a literature dominated by the American view), and casts new light on an allied military strategy that very nearly succeeded, but when it failed, failed spectacularly.
When Sandy Mitchell was arrested for his alleged involvement in two bombings in Saudi Arabia in December 2000, he thought it was a case of mistaken identity and that he would soon be released. Instead, he spent nearly three years in jail, where he was repeatedly tortured before being forced to sign a confession and admit his guilt on Saudi television. Throughout his incarceration the Saudi authorities knew that the attacks had been committed by al-Qaeda militants. Yet they kept Mitchell in jail and refused him access to a lawyer for a year. By this time he had been sentenced to death but he was eventually released before the penalty could be imposed. Saudi Babylon is the story of a shocking miscarriage of justice. But it also reveals an even more disturbing truth: how the British government, mindful of multi-billion-pound arms sales to Saudi Arabia, virtually abandoned Mitchell by adopting a softly-softly diplomatic approach to the corrupt Saudi royal family. Based on diaries and records of meetings with ministers and officials, this is a powerful exposé of how the British government acts when one of its citizens is illegally imprisoned and tortured by a regime with which it does business.
Many quantitative empirical studies of retirement preparedness find that a substantial number of US households face a potential financial crisis at some point in the future. This monograph provides a critical survey of the most important and best-known of these studies, and it also examines the prospects for other countries. Studies of retirement preparedness vary in complexity and sophistication, and as a result, researchers offer a wide range of forecasts, with some warning of a severe crisis and others being more skeptical about the likely scale of the problem. This monograph appraises the quality of surveyed studies by determining how well each deals with key conceptual issues and how adequately each addresses principal risks. Going beyond the circumstances in the United States, the monograph also provides international perspective by comparing the “macro” and institutional aspects of pension and health systems in a group of eight industrialized countries, including the United States.

This fingerstyle guitar book is a collection of popular music written by women composers during the North American parlor music era. Adapted for fingerstyle guitar, these 12 tunes are a representative sample of songs written from the 1840s to the 1920s: including a hymn, a march, topical songs, patriotic songs, folk-style tunes, and the blues. It was a period of time when women were little encouraged to write and publish music and were vastly underrepresented by publishing houses. However, the women composers in this collection persevered and found success having their original compositions published. It’s a diverse collection for fingerstyle guitar of lesser-known tunes to enduring classics still performed today. Intended for advanced beginners and intermediate guitarists, the selections are written in standard tuning and include online guitar renditions.
Written by a pioneer of modern fashion knitwear, Classic Knits of the 1980s describes the principal fundamentals of knitwear design and features original, colourful, textural and fun knitting patterns that capture the fashion zeitgeist of the 1980s designer knitwear boom. As well as selling ready-made knitwear to stores, several designers made their patterns available as home knitting kits. Classic Knits of the 1980s features a range of innovative designs from Sandy Black knitting kits, many published here for the first time. The patterns are suitable for a broad range of knitting skills, from those with good basic knowledge of knitting to the more experienced knitter. Made up of two parts: Part 1 establishes the fashion and knitwear context of the period and its influence on the development of the designs, examining the entire creative process from inspiration to final pattern. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, diagrams and charts, special features include patchwork (modular) designs and intarsia or colour-block knitting, with techniques and tips for pattern calculations, working from charts and handling several colours. Part 2 then offers twenty-one original patterns and designs, grouped into themes of textural, graphic, heraldic and ornamental, plus the unique Siamese cat, leopard and tiger accessories. Contemporary photography, together with original images from the 1980s, illustrates the designs' timeless appeal, with close-up images of intricate pattern details and suggested design variations to aid creative knitters inspired by this pivotal decade.
An authoritative history of combat photography and its cultural, emotional, and memorial roles, this collection is the first to examine the vernacular photos of World War I taken by its New Zealand participants. The book discusses how photography was used to capture and narrate, memorialize and observe, romanticize and bear witness to the experiences of New Zealanders at home and abroad. The first to argue for the importance of New Zealand photography to the history of war, this overview examines in depth the contradictions of war photography, as a site of remembrance and forgetting, nation and sacrifice, mourning and mythology, subjectivity and identity.

Who are the dominant owners of U.S. public debt? Is it widely held, or concentrated in the hands of a few? Does ownership of public debt give these bondholders power over our government? What do we make of the fact that foreign-owned debt has ballooned to nearly 50 percent today? Until now, we have not had any satisfactory answers to these questions. Public Debt, Inequality, and Power is the first comprehensive historical analysis of public debt ownership in the United States. It reveals that ownership of federal bonds has been increasingly concentrated in the hands of the 1 percent over the last three decades. Based on extensive and original research, Public Debt, Inequality, and Power will shock and enlighten.

Well before evidence-based practice became fashionable beyond clinical medicine, the team at SSRU was telling us what we ought to already know - that some interventions work better than others, and that that some well-meaning attempts at health promotion, just like medicine and surgery, may do harm. This book is a must for policy makers and practitioners who want to make a real difference, and understand how research evidence can inform their practice. The book will also be an important tool for researchers, who will increasingly be using the tools of systematic review if they want to inform and influence those who deliver services." - Helen Roberts, Professor of Child Health, City University This book bridges the gap between research and practice in health promotion. It advances evidence-based health promotion by illustrating how service providers and researchers can change their working practices to benefit the public. It addresses the need for health promotion services to be grounded in empirical research, and for research to focus on issues important to those delivering as well as those receiving the services. Using Research for Effective Health Promotion advances the debate about the relative values of qualitative and experimental research in health promotion, and encourages an increased participation of service users in the development and evaluation of services. It provides health promotion specialists with time-saving tools to draw upon research quickly and critically; and is an important resource for students and professionals in fields such as public health, nursing, education, social work, and voluntary services.

For Decadent authors, Romanticism was a source of powerful imaginative revisionism, perversion, transition, and partial negation. But for all these strong Decadent reactions against the period, the cultural phenomenon of Decadence shared with Romanticism a mutual distrust of the philosophy of utilitarianism and the aesthetics of neo-Classicism. Reflecting on the interstices between Romantic and Decadent literature, Decadent Romanticism reassesses the diverse and creative reactions of Decadent authors to Romanticism between 1780 and 1914, while also remaining alert to the prescience of the Romantic imagination to envisage its own distorted, darker, perverted, other self. Creative pairings include William Blake and his Decadent critics, the recurring figure of the sphinx in the work of Thomas De Quincey and Decadent writers, and Percy Shelley with both Mathilde Blind and Swinburne. Not surprisingly, John Keats’s works are a particular focus, in essays that explore Keats’s literary and visual legacies and his resonance for writers who considered him an icon of art for art’s sake. Crucial to this critical reassessment are the shared obsessions of Romanticism and Decadence with subjectivity, isolation, addiction, fragmentation, representation, romance, and voyeurism, as well as a poetics of desire and anxieties over the purpose of aestheticism.

Shell shock was the signature injury of the First World War. Military doctors during the conflict on the Western Front observed and personally experienced psychiatric states they had never witnessed before. This text reviews the published medical literature of that era which graphically detailed the clinical states of hysteria (conversion disorder) and neurasthenia (anxiety and PTSD). Medical officers at the front evolved pragmatic medicinal, cognitive and behavioural interventions, still practised today, though never scientifically proven to be effective. The doctors, like their patients, endured numerous horrors at the front, which were, for many, to influence their post-war personal and professional lives. Much of what they wrote was forgotten and deserves reconsideration. Neuropsychiatry was founded in the shell craters of Flanders.
