After 1945, those responsible for conservation in Germany resumed their work with a relatively high degree of continuity as far as laws and personnel were concerned. Yet conservationists soon found they had little choice but to modernize their views and practices in the challenging postwar context. Forced to change by necessity, those involved in state-sponsored conservation institutionalized and professionalized their efforts, while several private groups became more confrontational in their message and tactics. Through their steady and often conservative presence within the mainstream of West German society, conservationists ensured that by 1970 the map of the country was dotted with hundreds of reserves, dozens of nature parks, and one national park. In doing so, they assured themselves a strong position to participate in, rather than be excluded from, the left-leaning environmental movement of the 1970s.

In the shadow of Griffith Park along the Glendale Narrows section of the Los Angeles River sits Atwater Village, a charming slice of Los Angeles nestled amid Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and the city of Glendale. Atwater's beginnings date to 1868 when W. C. B. Richardson bought the 671-acre Santa Eulalia Rancho. Starting in 1904, the Pacific Electric Red Car offered a convenient commute to downtown Los Angeles, and the Art Tile Company (later Gladding McBean) and Van de Kamps Bakery became key local employers. Stylish homes and bungalows proliferated along the tree-lined streets, built in the Mediterranean, English Tudor, Spanish Colonial Revival, California Craftsman, and Fantasy architectural styles. A library, post office, schools, and churches sprang up along with more than 100 family-owned and corporate enterprises. Nearly 4 miles long and half a mile wide, Atwater evolved as a wholly contained community, prompting residents in 1987 to successfully petition the city to officially add the word Village to its name.

Claus Spreckels (1828–1908) emigrated from his homeland of Germany to the United States with only seventy-five cents in his pocket, built a sugar empire, and became one of the richest Americans in history alongside John D. Rockefeller, Warren Buffett, and Bill Gates. Migrating to San Francisco after the gold rush, Spreckels built the largest sugar beet factory of its kind in the United States. His sugar beet production in the Salinas Valley changed the focus of valley agriculture from dry to irrigated crops, resulting in the vast modern agricultural-industrial economy in today’s “Salad Bowl of the World.” When Spreckels gave America its first sugar cube, he became the “Sugar King.” The indomitable Spreckels was a colorful and complicated character on both sides of the Pacific. Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, , course: Seminar, language: English, abstract: April 19th, 2019 marked 30 years since Patricia Meili, a 28-year old white investment banker, was attacked and raped in Central Park, New York. This criminal case is also known as the “Central Park Five Case” because five boys at the ages of fourteen to sixteen, were falsely accused and subsequently had to serve prison sentences ranging from six to twelve years. They were viewed by the media, the justice system, and the public not as five youths with names, a life, a family, and a future, but as a cumulative dangerous unit. The case of the five boys showed that even in 1989, almost thirty years after the civil rights movement, there was still a clear distinction between Black and white in America. The director Ava DuVernay portrays this in her four-part miniseries "When They See Us," produced in 2019. This paper argues that the series “When They See Us” (Ava DuVernay, 2019) demonstrates how the American system has failed to see five individuals instead of the Central Park Five by false accusation and agitation by justice, media and the public based on racism.
