There are many areas of the formal education system, at the secondary level, in which teaching the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans (TTEA) can be integrated in history, social studies, culture, heritage studies, human rights, literature, the Arts, geography, and science among others. In this book, the author uses the findings of a qualitative multi-site case study on teaching the TTEA in selected countries in the Caribbean and the Americas, Africa and Europe to offer readers and especially teachers, multiple understanding of this complex and emotive subject. This is done through an examination of content, which she explores thematically, as well as through a discussion of teachers' thinking, planning and delivery of this content. Dr Gift also addresses the challenges teachers face negotiating the emotional issues associated with both teaching and learning the subject. The TTEA is heavy with content related to race, prejudice and discrimination, all of which are emotive issues. The lessons are learned from the case study which informs the book assist in the anticipation of such challenges and provide strategies and signposts for teachers. Secondary school teachers in the English-speaking Caribbean will find this book an invaluable resource in their practice of teaching the TTEA. However, it can also offer valuable insights to teachers in the Spanish and French-speaking Caribbean, the USA, Brazil, West Africa and in the UK and Europe.
The codes of conduct imposed on females by Spain's dictator Francisco Franco after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) created a stifling environment for women until his death in 1975. Beginning with Carmen Laforet's 1944 Nadal Prize-winning novel Nada, novels by women - many of which explore female identity - began to proliferate in Spain. The works examined in this study - Nada, Primera memoria (1960) by Ana Maria Matute, La placa del Diamant (1962) by Merce Rodoreda, Julia (1969) by Ana Maria Moix, El cuarto de atras (1978) by Carmen Martin Gaite, El amor es un juego solitario (1979) by Esther Tusquets, and Questio d'amor propi (1987) by Carme Riera - feature female protagonists struggling for self-realization and, by extension, for change in a restrictive Spanish society. Schumm's analysis of the seven novels demonstrates how examination of metaphoric tropes and mirror images provides insight into the protagonists' development.

During periods of close collaboration, championed by figures like John Ruskin and William Morris, architecture and craft were referred to as "the allied arts." Best known as one of the great short story writers of the twentieth century, Raymond Carver also published several volumes of poetry and considered himself as much a poet as a fiction writer. Sandra Lee Kleppe combines comparative analysis with an in-depth examination of Carver’s poems, making a case for the quality of Carver’s poetic output and showing the central role Carver’s pursuit of poetry played in his career as a writer. Carver constructed his own organic literary system of 'autopoetics,' a concept connected to a paradigm shift in our understanding of the inter-relatedness of biological and cultural systems. This idea is seen as informing Carver’s entire production, and a distinguishing feature of Kleppe’s book is its contextualization of Carver’s poetry within the complex literary and scientific systems that influenced his development as a writer. Consuming Surrealism in American Culture: Dissident Modernism argues that Surrealism worked as a powerful agitator to disrupt dominant ideas of modern art in the United States.
