The book also introduces the reader to the shady underworld of the "boodler" and the "joke", revealing the seemingly endemic stain of corruption that has haunted the power industry to this day, confirming Lord Acton's famous dictum that "Power tends to Corrupt." During the course of her 20 years of research, Sandra Darroch has also monitored the sweeping developments that have revolutionised Australia's multi-billion-dollar electricity industry in revent times. Looking at the varied designs of eleven important laboratories in North America, Europe, and Australia, all built between 2005 and 2019, Kaji-O'Grady and Smith examine the relationship between the design of contemporary laboratory buildings and the ideas and ideologies of science. Observing that every laboratory architect and client declares the same three aspirations—to eliminate boundaries, to communicate the benefits of its research programs, and to foster collaboration—Kaji-O'Grady and Smith organize their account according to the themes of boundaries, expression, and socialization. She gave up a privileged life in London to marry Jack, and she had a further 11 children, six of whom survived. Thomasine was a leader in fostering music and the arts in Nerang while Jack spearheaded the development of Nerang and the Gold Coast. The bridge leading from the main Highway into Nerang, named the Walter J. Browne bridge, is testimony to his community work. The author, Sandra J. Darroch, is a great-great-granddaughter of Thomasine and Jack, and is the author of nine books, including the first, definitive, biography of Lady Ottoline Morrell.
