The extent to which the Church was acquiring land on a threatening scale by the later thirteenth century is questioned, and the effects of the legislation on subsequent acquisition are assessed against the background of new fashions in ecclesiastical patronage and a more hostile economic climate. The statutes of 1279 and 1391 are well known. What this study shows is how much variation lay behind the apparently straightforward system of licensing and how closely the issue of mortmain tenure was related to wider social, political and economic considerations.

The resulting view challenges standard accounts of European social, economic, and political development. Sandra Halperin's analysis of the European experience begins where studies of Third World development often start: considering the legacies of colonial domination. Europe also had a colonial past, she reminds us, and the states of Europe, like those of today's Third World, were the product of colonialism and imperialism. From this starting point, Halperin traces features characteristic of Third World development through the history of European capitalism: enclave economies oriented to foreign markets; weak middle classes; alliances among the state, traditional landowning elites, and new industrial classes; unstable and partial democracy; sharp inequalities; and increasing poverty—all as much a part of European society on the eve of World War I as they are of developing countries today. Halperin also emphasizes the emergence of a militant, literal religion in Europe and its critical role in the class struggles of the nineteenth century.

In 1895, Franklin County Public Hospital (FCPH) was founded by 36 citizens led by Dr. Adams Calhoun Deane. The newly incorporated hospital rented the former home of Rev. Dr. Francis Robbins and served 55 patients in its first year of operation. By 1898, FCPH moved to the larger Converse House and then to purpose-built facilities at 164 High Street in 1910. The hospital trained nurses, including Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail, class of 1927, the first Native American graduate in the United States. In 1968, FCPH opened the architecturally unique "Spokes" wards. Throughout its history, the Board of Organized Work (now the Baystate Franklin Auxiliary) has supported the hospital with fundraising activities. FCPH became Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) after joining with Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, to form Baystate Health in 1986. This book celebrates 120 years of service to Franklin County.

This book – the first of a two-volume series – argues that, today, stakeholder thinking has evolved into the study of interactive, mutually engaged and responsive relationships that establish the very context of doing modern business, and create the groundwork for transparency and accountability. This book makes it clear that in today's societies successful companies are those that recognize that they have responsibilities to a range of stakeholders that go beyond mere compliance with the law or meeting the fiduciary responsibility inherent in maximizing returns to shareholders. If in the past the focus was on enhancing shareholder value, now it is on engaging stakeholders for long-term value creation. The process of engagement creates a dynamic context of interaction, mutual respect, dialogue and change – not a one-sided "management" of stakeholders. Indeed, the authors believe the very term "stakeholder management" to be outdated and corporate-centric. Companies can manage their relationships with stakeholders, but frequently cannot actually manage the stakeholders themselves, because, as the activist and collaborative initiatives described in this volume suggest, company-stakeholder relationships are not one-way streets and different institutions bring different agendas, goals and priorities to the engagement. There are clear implications to the way in which stakeholder thinking is unfolding today. If in the past corporate "social" responsibility was simply seen as profitability plus compliance plus philanthropy, now responsible corporate citizenship – or corporate responsibility – means companies being more aware of and understanding the societies in which they operate. Corporate responsibility means recognising that day-to-day operating practices affect stakeholders and that it is in those impacts where responsibility lies, not merely in efforts to "do good". Companies are now faced with a wide array of challenges that mean that senior executives and managers need to be able to deal with issues including greater accountability, human rights abuses, sustainability strategies, corporate governance codes, workplace ethics, stakeholder consultation and management. Stakeholder thinking needs to capture these new realities. The global reach of multinational corporations has served to highlight the need for the (re)integration of business into society, relationships into stakeholder relations, and ethics into managerial practice. The rise in power of global activism involving NGOs, and global business involving multinational corporations, makes it even more critical today for companies to consider the power and interests of corporate stakeholders when developing strategic plans. The interactivity and mutuality of relationships described in this book make it clear that firms and stakeholders share the power and responsibility to influence both the profit potential of the firm and how the benefits of the firm's success impact on society. This important volume brings together leading academic thought on stakeholder thinking for the first time. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat das Ziel, spezifische Förderpraktiken dieser Programme sowie deren Effekt auf den Startup-Erfolg zu untersuchen. Die Studienergebnisse identifizieren Corporate Accelerator-spezifische Praktiken, die einen positiven Einfluss auf den Startup-Erfolg haben. Die Ergebnisse zeigen zudem, dass die Unterstützung je nach Motiv des etablierten Unternehmens (symbolisch vs. substantiell) variiert. Die resultierenden Ergebnisse liefern relevante Implikationen sind für etablierte Unternehmen, Corporate Accelerator Manager und Startups. Corporate accelerators are intermediary organizations implemented by incumbent firms to support startups with various resources over a short period of time. Although they are built upon the model of independent accelerators, corporate accelerators do not necessarily aim for financial benefits but for strategic objectives. This thesis examines how corporate accelerators support participating startups and how this support impacts subsequent startups’ success based on qualitative and quantitative data. The findings of the study identify corporate accelerator-specific practices that positively influence the success of startups. Further the findings indicate that the extent of support varies, as incumbents initiate the programs as a result of substantive and/or symbolic motives. The findings therefore provide relevant implications for incumbents, corporate accelerator managers and startups.

This monograph is a comparative, socio-linguistic reassessment of the Deuteronomic idiom, leshakken shemo sham, and its synonymous biblical reflexes in the Deuteronomistic History, lashum shemo sham, and lihyot shemo sham. These particular formulae have long been understood as evidence of the Name Theology - the evolution in Israelite religion toward a more abstracted mode of divine presence in the temple. Utilizing epigraphic material gathered from Mesopotamian and Levantine contexts, this study demonstrates that leshakken shemo sham and lashum shemo sham are loan-adaptations of Akkadian shuma shakanu, an idiom common to the royal monumental tradition of Mesopotamia. The resulting retranslation and reinterpretation of the biblical idiom profoundly impacts the classic formulation of the Name Theology.

From the Editor This issue of New Directions for Evaluation (NDE) marks a milestone?the 25th anniversary of the American Evaluation Association (AEA). NDE is an official publication of AEA and has been a crucial means for the Association to foster and promote the professionalization of evaluation through thematic discussions of theory and practice in evaluation. NDE was first published in 1978 under the name New Directions for Program Evaluation, although the title became New Directions for Evaluation in 1995 in acknowledgment of the broader scope of evaluation. The current issue of NDE, on the 25th anniversary of AEA, looks not back but ahead. Because NDE is a thematic and guest-edited journal it tends to favor more mature, self-assured voices in evaluation. The journal format does not lend itself easily to showcasing the voices of novice evaluators, those just entering the field and who will be the next generation of evaluation practitioners and theoreticians. As such, NDE has chosen on this anniversary to highlight those voices. Included are a number of chapters that build on what evaluation has already learned from other disciplines by introducing us to new possibilities. We are also challenged in the chapters to think about techniques or methods we use, both at a practical and conceptual level. Some chapters raise questions about who evaluators are, how they interact with others, and the roles they assume in their practice. Some young evaluators are confronting, in various ways, conundrums in thinking about and doing evaluation within organizations, either from an external or internal perspective.
