(2020) "A stirring memoir that beautifully and humorously captures the pain of unresolved loss.” — Kirkus Reviews The true story of a woman whose life is up-ended when she begins an armchair treasure hunt—a search for $10,000 worth of gold coins buried in New York City, of all places—with a man who, as she points out, is not her husband. In this eloquent, hilarious, sharply realized memoir, Sandra A. Miller grapples with the death of her difficult mother and the regret and confusion that so often accompanies middle age. In a very real way, Miller has spent her life hunting for buried treasure. As a child, she trained herself to find things: dropped hair clips, shiny bits of broken glass, discarded lighters. Looking to escape from her volatile parents and often-unhappy childhood, Miller found deeper meaning, and a good deal of hope, in each of these objects. Now an adult and facing the loss of her last living parent—her mother who is at once cold, difficult, and wildly funny—Miller finds herself, as she so often did as a little girl, pressed against a wall of her own longing. Her search for gold, which soon becomes an obsession, forces her to dredge up painful pieces of her past, confront the true source of her sorrow, and finally discover what it is she has been looking for all these years. "Trove is the treasure. It's the kind of story that gives you a new best friend in a narrator. Your get to travel with her on an emotional journey with laughs and tears. I am happy to be shut in with this wonderful story that has taken me to so many places." — Meredith Goldstein, advice columnist and entertainment reporter for The Boston Globe.

Sometimes we need to switch off the autopilot and recover the flight controls of our lives. In not doing so we risk passing through life without actually living it. Pieces of My Mind is a set of soul-searching reflections the author has recorded after turning the autopilot off.
The Journey for Justice contradicts the beliefs that black history is lost, nonexistent, and unimportant. The information in the book expands the knowledge on African American history, as well as reveals facts that have never been published. The research findings contribute to historical accuracy. I wish to reveal the contributions that enslaved families and their descendants have made to this country and are continuing to contribute to this country in their pursuit for equality and justice. My goals are to educate the public and preserve the African American history and heritage.A wealth of information has been preserved in prominent planter families' collections and has been used to write extensive details about their lives. There is a lack of information or limited information on the enslaved African Americans on these plantations. What happened to these individuals after slavery-during Reconstruction and after? My African American roots go back to Surry County, Virginia. My ancestors were enslaved on the Mount Pleasant/Swann's Point and Four-Mile Tree (located four miles from Jamestown) Plantations. These plantations were settled by the English in 1630s. After exhausting the land in Surry, the planters moved upriver for fertile farming land in the late 1700s and early 1800s. I am providing information on the lives of these enslaved African Americans during slavery, the ex-slaves during Reconstruction, and their descendants after Reconstruction. After many years of researching the reliability of the oral histories and comparing this information with archival documents, I am presenting findings that are valid and worthy of publishing. The year 2019 marked the four-hundredth anniversary of people of African descent arriving in English North America. Now is an appropriate time to acknowledge their contributions to this country.

Who is the Fool and what does he mean to us? Pre-1900 scholars thought him a Renaissance fashion, a continental import of note in the British Isles only between 1486 and the 1630s, per his appearances in Shakespeare's plays. However, as Sandra Billington shows in this pioneering study, the Fool has been with us from medieval times and has worn many guises: village idiot and sophisticated comedian, embodiment of Satan and God's own jester. He has managed, as Billington notes, 'to inspire or infect our thinking for at least eight hundred years'.
