The solitaire game “The Tower of Hanoi" was invented in the 19th century by the French number theorist Édouard Lucas. The book presents its mathematical theory and offers a survey of the historical development from predecessors up to recent research. In addition to long-standing myths, it provides a detailed overview of the essential mathematical facts with complete proofs, and also includes unpublished material, e.g., on some captivating integer sequences. The main objects of research today are the so-called Hanoi graphs and the related Sierpiński graphs. Acknowledging the great popularity of the topic in computer science, algorithms, together with their correctness proofs, form an essential part of the book. In view of the most important practical applications, namely in physics, network theory and cognitive (neuro)psychology, the book also addresses other structures related to the Tower of Hanoi and its variants. The updated second edition includes, for the first time in English, the breakthrough reached with the solution of the “The Reve's Puzzle" in 2014. This is a special case of the famed Frame-Stewart conjecture which is still open after more than 75 years. Enriched with elaborate illustrations, connections to other puzzles and challenges for the reader in the form of (solved) exercises as well as problems for further exploration, this book is enjoyable reading for students, educators, game enthusiasts and researchers alike. Excerpts from reviews of the first edition: “The book is an unusual, but very welcome, form of mathematical writing: recreational mathematics taken seriously and serious mathematics treated historically. I don’t hesitate to recommend this book to students, professional research mathematicians, teachers, and to readers of popular mathematics who enjoy more technical expository detail.” Chris Sangwin, The Mathematical Intelligencer 37(4) (2015) 87f. “The book demonstrates that the Tower of Hanoi has a very rich mathematical structure, and as soon as we tweak the parameters we surprisingly quickly find ourselves in the realm of open problems.” László Kozma, ACM SIGACT News 45(3) (2014) 34ff. “Each time I open the book I discover a renewed interest in the Tower of Hanoi. I am sure that this will be the case for all readers.” Jean-Paul Allouche, Newsletter of the European Mathematical Society 93 (2014) 56.
This handbook examines the dichotomy between the structure of products and their subgraphs. It also features the design of efficient algorithms that recognize products and their subgraphs and explores the relationship between graph parameters of the product and factors. Extensively revised and expanded, this second edition presents full proofs of many important results as well as up-to-date research and conjectures. It illustrates applications of graph products in several areas and contains well over 300 exercises. Supplementary material is available on the book's website.

In this novel based on true events, a little girl kidnapped by her father must learn to survive in the midst of a chaotic existence. Once upon a time in an exotic land called Miami Beach, a Jewish American princess was born. Not lucky enough to have a fairy godmother or even a mother to watch over her, the princess only had a wicked, malevolent, and misogynistic father. Life was good for the little princessuntil she turned three and her father snatched her away from everything she had ever known. Traveling in a 1941 Chrysler with a volatile man who took her to the Catskills, Mexico, and Las Vegas, the princess told herself that all would be well. She was with her father, after all. But the excitement of embarking on an adventure soon waned when she realized she might never know her real name, would never know where she will be living from one day to the next, and would never know if she would be acting like a boy or girl each morning when she woke up. Based on true events, Then Theres Tomorrow tells the compelling story of a little girl who must search for her own identity as she learns to cope in a turbulent existence chosen for her by a man who loves no one but himself.
This “ambitious, supernatural coming-of-age story” (The LA Times) is a sweeping tale of ghosts in the modern world, and one woman's struggle to create her own destiny. There are ghosts on the Black Isle. Ghosts that no one can see. No one...except Cassandra. Uprooted from Shanghai with her father and twin brother, young Cassandra finds the Black Isle's bustling, immigrant-filled seaport, swampy jungle, and grand rubber plantations a sharp contrast to the city of her childhood. And she soon makes another discovery: the Black Isle is swarming with ghosts. Haunted and lonely, Cassandra at first tries to ignore her ability to see the restless apparitions that drift down the street and crouch in cold corners at school. Yet despite her struggles with these spirits, Cassandra comes to love her troubled new home. And soon, she attracts the notice of a dangerously charismatic man. Even as she becomes a fearless young woman, the Isle's dark forces won't let her go. War is looming, and Cassandra wonders if her unique gift might be her beloved island's only chance for salvation . . . Taking readers from the 1920s, through the Japanese occupation during WWII, to the Isle's radical transformation into a gleaming cosmopolitan city, The Black Isle is a sweeping epic--a deeply imagined, fiercely original tale from a vibrant new voice in fiction.

She was trying to make it on her own. She was just a half-grown, gray cat, apparently dumped at the side of the road. No one wanted her, and no one wanted the responsibility of finding her a home. The person who left her there probably carelessly assumed that she was old enough to take care of herself. She wasnt doing a very good job of it... The Snyder family already had a cat. His name was Jabez, and he had been adopted from a local animal shelter two years previous to the strays arrival. A second cat wasnt part of the Snyders plans. God had different ideas. When the small, stray cat entered their lives, the Snyders found themselves the recipients of the unexpected blessings of laughter, love, and lessons they would never forget. Using a warm, conversational style, Sandi offers the reader a months worth of charming anecdotes about the two cats, each coupled with a Bible lesson that warms the heart. Young and old alike will delight in this devotional study. As a special feature, journal pages are included in the back of the book, enabling each reader to record his/her own spiritual insights, thoughts, and prayers.

Phone calls often bring good news. the one placed in late October of 1967 proved to be a life-changing experience for both young journalist Sandi Gould and United Press International bureau manager John Kady. Little did they know they were embarking on a lifelong friendship that would extend from the office in Columbus, Ohio, into everyday life for nearly a half of a century. In Newsroom Buddies, Sandi and John alternate their personal stories of working together for more than twenty-two years--from the late 1960s through 1990. They tell how they enjoyed the high points of life as journalists and how they handled being survivors as they watched the company they loved dwindle to a mere shadow of what it once was. Even as life took them in different directions, they came together once again through their love of writing. It was a friendship only one event could separate. Praise for Newsroom Buddies "It's very touching and obviously a great read for anyone with UPI in his blood." --Tom Foty, CBS Radio News "Interesting the way alternating chapters tell the story of the glory days of a once-prominent wire service." --Ron Cohen, coauthor of Down to the Wire
From author and filmmaker Sandi Tan, director of the acclaimed documentary Shirkers, comes a novel about a neighborhood of immigrants, seekers, lovers, and lurkers. The residents of Santa Claus Lane do their best to stay out of each other’s way, but desire, fury and mischief too often propel these suburban neighbors to collide. Precocious Korean American sisters Mira and Rosemary find their world rocked by a suicide, and they must fight to keep their home; a charismatic and creepy drama teacher grooms his students; a sardonic gay horror novelist finds that aging is more terrifying than any monster; and a white hippie mom and her adopted Vietnamese daughter realize that their anger binds them rather than pushes them apart. Lurkers is an homage to the rangy beauty of Los Angeles and the surprising power that we have to change the lives of those around us.

A housecat attempts to make sense of the world when her human family experiences a crisis in this bittersweet, uplifting debut novel. Pet owners know that a cat’s loyalty is not easily earned. Boo, a resourceful young feline with a keen eye and inquiring mind, has nonetheless grown intensely devoted to her human companion, Carrie. Several days ago, Carrie—or Mother, as Boo calls her—suddenly went away, leaving her family, including Boo, in disarray. Carrie’s husband, Tommy, is distant and distracted even as he does his best to care for Boo’s human siblings, especially baby Finn. Boo worries about who will fill her food dish and provide a warm lap to nestle into. More pressing still, she’s trying to uncover the complicated truth about why Carrie left. Though frequently mystified by human behavior, Boo is sure that Carrie once cared passionately for Tommy and adores her children, even the non-feline ones. But she also sees it may not be enough to make things right. Perhaps only a cat—a wise, observant, very determined cat—can do that . . . Wonderfully tender and insightful, The Astonishing Thing explores the intricacies of marriage and family through an unforgettable perspective at the center of it all. Are we living in an age where we are more boredom-prone? Or are other people boring us? Or could we be that boring person?! In our current information age, we are constantly connected to technology, and have so many varied ways to spend our leisure time that we should all surely never know what boredom feels like. Yet, boredom appears to be on the rise; it seems that the more we have to stimulate us, the more stimulation we crave. In a quest to relieve our boredom, we engage in dangerous risk-taking - from extreme sports to drugs to gambling to anti-social behaviour, or we overindulge in shopping or eating. The Science of Boredom explores the causes and consequences of boredom in the fast-paced twenty-first century. Parents are desperate to keep their children entertained during every waking moment, the education system is geared towards interactivity, and attention spans are dropping as we use multiple devices at all times. But the world of work can be increasingly repetitive and routine, and we are losing the ability to tolerate this everyday tedium. Using Sandi Mann's own ground-breaking research into boredom, this book tells the story of how we act, react and cope when we are bored, and argues that there is a positive side to boredom. It can be a catalyst for humour, fun, reflection, creativity and inspiration. The radical solution to the 'boredom problem' is to harness it rather than try to avoid it. Allowing yourself time away from constant stimuli can enrich your life. We should all embrace our boredom and see the upside of our downtime.
