America's third largest city until 1890, Brooklyn, New York, had a striking theatrical culture before it became a borough of Greater New York in 1898. As the city gained size and influence, more and more theatres arose, with at least 15 venues ultimately vying for favor. Too many theatregoers, however, preferred the discomforts of a ferry and horsecar trip to New York's playhouses instead of supporting the local product. Nor did the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 do Brooklyn's theatres any favors. Manhattan's Goliath slayed Brooklyn's David. This first comprehensive study of Brooklyn's old-time theatre describes the city's early history, each of its many playhouses, its plays and actors (including nearly every foreign and domestic star), and its scandals and catastrophes, including the theatre fire that killed nearly 300. Brooklyn's ongoing struggle to establish theatres in a society dominated by anti-theatrical preachers, including Henry Ward Beecher, is detailed, as are all the ways that Brooklyn typified 19th century American theatre, from stock companies to combinations. Replete with fascinating anecdotes, this is the story of a major city from which theatre all but vanished before being reborn as a present-day artistic mecca.
At the end of World War II, the once-isolationist American Catholic Church appointed 'consultants' to the U.S. delegation to the 1945 United Nations Conference on International Organization at San Francisco (UNCIO), a parley which had been mandated by the Big Three to draft a charter for the projected world organization. This analysis, based primarily on archival sources from the U.S. State Department, the National Catholic Welfare Conference (NCWC), and the Catholic Association for International Peace (CAIP), focuses on the bid by these international affairs specialists from the NCWC and the CAIP to modify the Dumbarton Oaks and Yalta proposals along the lines suggested by Pius XII's 'Five Point Peace Program' and the American hierarchy's statements, On International Order and On Organizing World Peace. In this crusade to 'liberalize' the UN Charter, this study proposes, the American Catholic Church realized only partial success. This limited accomplishment was, nevertheless, sufficient impetus for its progression from public hostility to cautious promotion of the UN. This book is a discussion of 75 of the most popular films in America from 1921 through 1999 and the changes that have taken place in how masculinity is portrayed in the movies over that period of time. Traditionally in popular films, men have met challenging tasks, but what they accomplish and how successful they are have been drastically changed since the early 1920s. Prior to World War II, men were most often presented within the context of a family. After the war, men were presented as concerned with issues beyond their immediate families, and after 1970, they were portrayed as being overwhelmed by their situations. Recently, popular films have tended to focus on the relationships between men. This work documents these changes over eight decades, using the movies as vehicles to illustrate the major transformations.
