Sporting Blackness examines issues of race and representation in sports films, exploring what it means to embody, perform, play out, and contest blackness by representations of Black athletes on screen. By presenting new critical terms, Sheppard analyzes not only “skin in the game,” or how racial representation shapes the genre’s imagery, but also “skin in the genre,” or the formal consequences of blackness on the sport film genre’s modes, codes, and conventions. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach, Sheppard argues that representations of Black sporting bodies contain “critical muscle memories”: embodied, kinesthetic, and cinematic histories that go beyond a film’s plot to index, circulate, and reproduce broader narratives about Black sporting and non-sporting experiences in American society.

Vulnerability, Extremism, and Schooling: Restorative Practices, Policy Enactment, and Managing Risk documents and analyzes efforts by educational policymakers to combat susceptibility to extremism within disadvantaged communities. Schools worldwide are increasingly enlisted in the efforts of nation-states to prevent or counter violent extremism. However, since extremism is a notoriously complex and difficult concept to define, attempts to counter violent extremism are inevitably entangled in issues of political and social power. Through the lens of affective governance—which refers to a style of governing emphasizing the emotional and psychological needs of citizens, as well as their sense of connection and belonging to their community—this book draws attention to how policy enactment can be closely aligned with government agendas revolving around the management of risk. The authors argue that extremism is closely tied to systemic marginalization and, while efforts to combat a susceptibility to extremism are important, so is a continual critique of such efforts. This is especially true when approaches are aimed at populations who are already marginalized.

An eye-opening look at Little Women author Louisa May Alcott's time as a Civil War nurse, and the far-reaching implications her service had on her writing and her activism Louisa on the Frontlines is the first narrative nonfiction book focusing on the least-known aspect of Louisa May Alcott's career -- her time spent as a nurse during the Civil War. Though her service was brief, the dramatic experience was one that she considered pivotal in helping her write the beloved classic Little Women. It also deeply affected her tenuous relationship with her father, and inspired her commitment to abolitionism. Through it all, she kept a journal and wrote letters to her family and friends. These letters were published in the newspaper, and her subsequent book, Hospital Sketches spotlighted the dire conditions of the military hospitals and the suffering endured by the wounded soldiers she cared for. To this day, her work is considered a pioneering account of military nursing. Alcott's time as an Army nurse in the Civil War helped her find her authentic voice -- and cemented her foundational belief system. Louisa on the Frontlines reveals the emergence of this prominent feminist and abolitionist -- a woman whose life and work has inspired millions and continues to do so today,

There have been many books, articles, and several movies detailing the terrors and errors on the night of April 14-15, 1912 when the stunning new passenger liner, H.M.S. Titanic, met with disaster on the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The discovery of the wreck site in 1987, by Dr. Robert Ballard, led to an entirely new round of speculation regarding the whys and wherefores of the demise of this wondrous achievement by Mankind. The book you hold in your hand, Ride the Sea, goes in a different direction, but is inspired by that tragic event. Human beings believe what they want to believe. Their prejudices and rationales are formed by growing up around adults, attending school, competing with their contemporaries, and undergoing personal experiences. Most important among these are, of course, one’s contemporaries. Watching how someone is treated by those you respect or emulate, or simply enjoy being around, solidifies behavior before a person even realizes beliefs are being molded. The same can be said regarding one’s environment. If arrogance guides one’s behavior toward others, it will similarly lead a person astray when confronted with the challenges of Nature. A careless attitude can leave a man exposed to wrath from natural forces even if the day is sunny and calm. In the early 20th Century, making a ship competitive, rather than 100% secure, guided the behavior of their wealthy owners. With the demise of the luxurious, ebullient Titanic, the world would never be quite the same again. Controversies surrounding her sinking remain with us even today. The cold, dark ocean depths retain answers to questions which we are not yet wise enough to ask. Can some of these answers be found today amid the cavorting, chilled waves of the Atlantic Ocean?

In the 1950s, Confidential magazine, America's first celebrity scandal magazine, revealed Hollywood stars' secrets, misdeeds, and transgressions in gritty, unvarnished detail. Deploying a vast network of tipsters to root out scandalous facts about the stars, including sexual affairs, drug use, and sexual orientation, publisher Robert Harrison destroyed celebrities' carefully constructed images and built a media empire. Confidential became the bestselling magazine on American newsstands in the 1950s, surpassing Time, Life, and the Saturday Evening Post. Eventually the stars fought back, filing multimillion-dollar libel suits against the magazine. The state of California, prodded by the film studios, prosecuted Harrison for obscenity and criminal libel, culminating in a famous, star-studded Los Angeles trial. This is Confidential's story, detailing how the magazine revolutionized celebrity culture and American society in the 1950s and beyond. With its bold red-yellow-and-blue covers, screaming headlines, and tawdry stories, Confidential exploded the candy-coated image of movie stars that Hollywood and the press had sold to the public. It transformed Americas from innocents to more sophisticated, worldly people, wise to the phony and constructed nature of celebrity. It shifted reporting on celebrities from an enterprise of concealment and make-believe to one that was more frank, bawdy, and true. Confidential's success marked the end of an era of hush-hush—of secrets, closets, and sexual taboos—and the beginning of our age of tell-all exposure.

I never liked reading when I was younger because there was nothing that was enjoyable to read so I started writing, hoping to give others enjoyable books to read. I never liked how the world was so I wrote what I wanted the world to be. I went to Michigan State University to study Beef Cattle Management right after high school. I currently live in Brown City, MI and do construction with my parents. I am also going back to school soon to study Criminal Justice so I can be a police officer. I hope to publish more books after this one and I also hope you enjoy my first book.

A talented chef discovers how spices and scents can transport her—and, more importantly, how self-confidence can unlock the greatest magic of all: love—in this perfectly seasoned new novel by Samantha Vérant. Kate Jenkins doesn’t believe in fate. She believes in a clear vision, meticulous planning, and hard work in order to achieve her culinary dreams. On the cusp of opening her own Parisian restaurant, Bistro Exotique, she isn’t even concerned when her standoffish—and annoyingly sexy—neighbor dismisses her as a crazy American tourist or when she meets the wildly eccentric Garrance, the self-proclaimed Spice Master of Paris, who ominously warns her of the previous owner’s failures. Confident and optimistic, Kate keeps calm and cooks on. Until a series of unfortunate events derail her plans and her entire staff quits. Kate is about to throw in the kitchen towel on her lifelong dream when Garrance offers to use her mastery of scents and spices to help her, but it comes at a price: Kate must work with Garrance’s son, Charles, a world-class chef and total jerk. After Kate hesitantly concedes to the deal, she slowly learns to open her heart and mind to new concepts, not quite sure if the magic she’s experiencing comes from Garrance’s spices, from within herself, or from the growing chemistry with Charles. One thing is certain, though: her kitchen is getting increasingly hot.
