This study is based on a manuscript which was carried by a Chinese monk through the monasteries of the Hexi corridor, as part of his pilgrimage from Wutaishan to India. The manuscript has been created as a composite object from three separate documents, with Chinese and Tibetan texts on them. Included is a series of Tibetan letters of introduction addressed to the heads of monasteries along the route, functioning as a passport when passing through the region. The manuscript dates to the late 960s, coinciding with the large pilgrimage movement during the reign of Emperor Taizu of the Northern Song recorded in transmitted sources. Therefore, it is very likely that this is a unique contemporary testimony of the movement, of which our pilgrim was also part. Complementing extant historical sources, the manuscript provides evidence for the high degree of ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity in Western China during this period.

Droughts are a major hazard to both natural and human-dominated environments and those, especially of long duration and high intensity, can be highly damaging and leave long-lasting effects. This book describes the climatic conditions that give rise to droughts, and their various forms and chief attributes. Past droughts are described including those that had severe impacts on human societies. As a disturbance, droughts can be thought of as “ramps” in that they usually build slowly and take time to become evident. As precipitation is reduced, flows from catchments into aquatic systems decline. As water declines in water bodies, ecological processes are changed and the biota can be drastically reduced, though species and populations may survive by using refuges. Recovery from drought varies in both rates and in degrees of completeness and may be a function of both refuge availability and connectivity. For the first time, this book reviews the available rather scattered literature on the impacts of drought on the flora, fauna and ecological processes of aquatic ecosystems ranging from small ponds to lakes and from streams to estuaries. First Published in 1984 Province and Politics in Late Imperial China presents analysis of one of the regional governments of China, the administration of the Szechwan governor-general from its apogee at the end of the nineteenth century to its nadir in the revolution of 1911. The Szechwan governor – general not only ruled the one province of Szechwan, but also exercised significant powers in Kweichow, the Tibetan borderlands, and parts of Yunnan and Hupei, as well as playing a major role in imperial politics. He was therefore a regional and not simply a provincial figure, while Szechwan was characteristic of the system of Chinese regions. This book seeks to show that the main threat to the dominance of the Szechwan governors – general came from their own modernizing activities; viceregal government broke down in the attempt to use traditional means to modern ends. In microcosm, therefore, Szechwan displays the pattern in both politics and ecology that was one of disruptive modernization in China. This book is an interesting read for scholars of Chinese history.
First U.K. National Conference on Heat Transfer, Volume 1, documents the proceedings of the conference organized by the U.K. National Committee for Heat Transfer—a joint committee of the Institutions of Chemical and Mechanical Engineers and includes a member nominated by the Heat Transfer Society—held at the University of Leeds, on 3-5 July 1984. Recently, the preparation and characterization of materials in the nanometer scale has become challenging in the field of material science. Materials in the micrometer scale mostly exhibit physical properties as same as that of bulk form; however materials in the nanometer scale may exhibit physical properties distinctively different from that of bulk. Semiconducting nanoparticles have attracted widespread attention because of their special optical and electronic properties arising from the quantum confinement of electrons and large surface area. Among the semiconductor materials, Zinc Sulphide (ZnS), shows various luminescence properties such as photoluminescence, electroluminescence and thermoluminescence. Hence, ZnS is a traditional phosphor widely used in flat-panel display, electroluminescence devices, infrared windows, sensors and lasers. When ZnS material is doped with transition or rare earth metal ions, it is possible to modify its physical properties. For doped nanocrstalline semiconductor materials, quantum confinement effects in the energy states also produce unusual optical behaviour. In this book, undoped and some transition metal ions doped ZnS semiconducting nanomaterials were synthesized by microwave-assisted solvothermal method. To prepare the undoped ZnS nanoparticles, zinc acetate and thiourea were used as the precursor materials and ethylene glycol was used as the solvent. The solvothermal method used in this present work is an effective method for preparing metal sulfides under mild conditions, which is a simple, cheaper and convenient method. ZnS materials doped with transition metal ions were also synthesized by the same method. In the present work, ZnS material was doped with manganese, copper, cobalt and indium in four different concentrations. The microwave treated precursor materials, after washing with de-ionised water and acetone and after annealing leads to fine nanocrystalline powder.

How superhero narratives in the margins of the mainstream tell innovative, feminist stories. It’s no secret that superhero comics and their related media perpetuate a model of a straight, white, male hero at the expense of representing women and other minorities, but other narratives exist. Searching for Feminist Superheroes recognizes that female-led superhero comics, with diverse casts of characters and inclusive storytelling, exist on the margins of the mainstream superhero genre. But rather than focusing on these stories as marginalized, Sam Langsdale’s work on heroes such as Spider-Woman, America Chavez, and Ironheart locates the margins as a site of innovation and productivity, which have enabled the creation of feminist superhero texts. Employing feminist and intersectional philosophies in an analysis of these comics, Langsdale suggests that feminist superheroes have the potential to contribute to a social imagination that is crucial in working toward a more just world. This book presents a systematic and unified approach for modern nonparametric treatment of missing and modified data via examples of density and hazard rate estimation, nonparametric regression, filtering signals, and time series analysis. All basic types of missing at random and not at random, biasing, truncation, censoring, and measurement errors are discussed, and their treatment is explained. Ten chapters of the book cover basic cases of direct data, biased data, nondestructive and destructive missing, survival data modified by truncation and censoring, missing survival data, stationary and nonstationary time series and processes, and ill-posed modifications.
