The book portrays Sam’s departure from Fiji after secondary school as a young adult and his arrival in England, where he relied on hard work to improve his living standards. Using amusing anecdotes he recalls how he was introduced to everyday luxuries such as baths and televisions, highlighting the differences between the two countries that he has called home. Sam explains how coming to England gave him a better standard of life, but how he still misses the informal lifestyle and culture of Fiji. My Journey from Fiji to England offers readers an insight into the landscape, history and culture of Fiji from a local perspective. Sam’s memoir is a factual, informative and interesting read that will appeal to readers that enjoy autobiographys. Several of these longstanding and emerging issues in land tenure include the role of the state in land tenure reforms; urban land questions, the nature of land struggles and improvements; and, the impact of land tenure developments on particular social groups and countries. An overarching concern is the extent to which land rights are being commodified, through the conversion of land held under customary tenure systems into marketised systems. The consequences of this include growing land concentration, land tenure insecurities, diminishing access to land by various sections of society, including the poor, women and less dominant ethno-religious groups. This volume brings together different studies on Africa's land questions exploring emerging land issues on the continent in terms of the wider questions of development, citizenship, and democratisation. Housing for Special Groups contains the proceedings of an international seminar held in the Netherlands on November 8-13, 1976 under the auspices of the Committee on Housing, Building and Planning of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The seminar provided a forum for discussing the special housing requirements of certain groups, including the elderly and the handicapped. The emphasis is on the scope and size of special housing problems and their likely future evolution, as well as the general lines of approach adopted by various countries to tackle these problems. The discussions are organized around three themes: specific housing needs in relation to overall housing policy; social principles, including financial aid; and architectural, planning, and technical aspects. The issues covered include the right to housing and the integration of such housing into the community and the avoidance of segregation; the possibility of housing choice; the relationship between the life-cycle of households and housing needs; and the architecture, planning, and technical aspects of housing for special groups in western Europe and eastern Europe. The possibilities offered both by new production and by alterations to existing buildings are considered. This monograph will be of interest to housing officials and policymakers.
