“The cement slabs and decaying fountains obscured by vegetation at the site of Camp Hearne echo a time forgotten of a bustling city of nearly 5,000 men brought together by world conflict.” The oral histories, archival research, and archaeological data compiled by author Michael Waters and his team of researchers tells the story of 5,000 German soldiers held as prisoners of war in rural Texas during World War II. Camp Hearne, located on the outskirts of Hearne, Texas, was one of the first and largest POW camps in the United States. Between 1943 and 1945 nearly 50,000 German prisoners, mostly from the German Afrika Korps lived and worked at seventy POW camps across Texas. The story of Camp Hearne told here offers the first in-depth look at one of these camps and includes an archaeological study of the treatment and conditions of the German prisoners. Drawing on newspaper accounts and official records from the time, and the recollections of surviving POWs, guards, and local residents, Waters and his team have constructed a detailed description of life in the camp: educational opportunities, recreation, mail call, religious practices, work details, and the food provided. Also revealed are the more serious issues that faced the Americans inside the POW compounds: illegal alcohol distillation, suicides, escapes, hidden secret shortwave radios, and the subversion of postal services. Fascinating artifacts recovered from the site and from the collections of local residents add concrete details. Waters also discusses the national policies and motivations for the treatment of prisoners that prescribed the particulars of camp life. The shadow world of Nazism in the camp is revealed, adding darkness to a story that is otherwise optimistic and in places humorous. The most sinister and brutal example of Nazi activity was the murder of Corporal Hugo Krauss, a German-born New York–raised volunteer in the German army. Captured in North Africa after service in Russia, Krause was attacked seven months later by six to ten fellow prisoners and beaten with clubs, nail–studded boards and a lead pipe. The dramatic recounting of the murder and the ensuing investigation illustrate much about the underlying political tensions of camp existence. This book makes a unique and notable contribution to Texas history. The narrative is enriched by numerous photographs and drawings. It will engage those interested in Texas history and World War II and hold particular interest for avocational and professional historical archaeologists.

Wright, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King (among other things); Chapter Nine, Forcing Scared Against The President discusses how the politicians work overtime to portray President Obama illegitimately to the American Public, and Chapter Ten, disputes the assertion that Barack Obama is a radical (Really?); Chapter Eleven, Will the Real Mr. Speaker Stand, questions the heart of John Boehner and Chapter Twelve, Guess Whos Coming To The Tea Party warns the Tea Party that they could very easily become the terror group of the past. Chapter One, I Saw An Angel is the foundation for the book and how it all got started.

When his commanding officer crossed the line in Iraq by giving the one order he thought he should not have given, that did it for Maj. Eddy Matthews Graves. He was so pissed off that he sent something incriminating about the war to an editor at the New York Times. Shortly thereafter, he took it on the lam and went AWOL. Days after receiving the sealed envelope, the New York Times wrote a scathing half-page editorial that openly admonished the army and demanded that the commanding officer, Gen. Milton Xavier Fletcher, resign. The editorial did not say what the general had done. Two days after, tired and beaten, the general abruptly resigned, and he also didnt say why. He kept his lips sealed and left everyone wondering what couldve happened in Iraq. Right away, the congress, led by the opposing party, smelled a rat and began calling for all sorts of hearings and demanded that the rogue major be found and brought home for questioning. The White House panicked, and rightfully so, they shouldit was an election year. The polls were beginning to favor the opposition. If whatever caused the general to resign was damaging, they felt it would definitely tilt the upcoming election in favor of the opposing party if the major was brought home. They couldnt let that happenthe presidency was at stake. A decision had to be madefast. So they secretly ordered the major killed. However, they never counted on the resourcefulness and perseverance of those who wanted to see the major brought home-they wanted him alive. They were willing to go to any length to assure his safety even if it meant sacrificing other lives. The question is, will the major survive?

Our "Drug War" mentality prevents Law Enforcement from doing real "Harm Reduction" and causes more damage and harm than the actual illegal drug use.

Most probably the readers of this magazine have never heard of the original TRACKS. I was in the very same situation until by the end of 2020, when NZ LRDG-historian Brendan OCarroll has provided me with a hardly readable copy of the June 1941 issue of TRACKS. I was immediately fascinated by these windows into the past and just thought: "We should revive TRACKS! " The editor of the original Tracks was, that time 20 years old, TA Sgt. N.A Moore, a clerk attached to LRDG Group HQ. The June 1941 issue was created by him when the LRDG HQ was located at Kufra. There he got the idea to create a "house paper" for the unit. He recalled in a letter which was published in the 1991 Newsletter of the LRDG Association, that there were only a very limited number of people who were willing to contribute and that this first edition was mainly launched thanks to the contribution of Lieut. Col. Bagnold and Captain Kennedy Shaw. And indeed, the June 1941 remained the single and only issue of Tracks - it was never published again.... until today!
