From 2001-2004, no Division IA men's college basketball program in the country had a better winning percentage (88-16, .846) than the University of Pittsburgh. Pitt also won (or shared) three consecutive Big East Conference regular-season or tournament championships during that period. Approaching its 100th year of intercollegiate basketball, Pitt could lay claim to the assertion that these were, indeed, a rejuvenation of its glory days. It wasn't always that way. The university--once known as the Western University of PennsylvaniA fielded its first basketball team in 1905-06. The team practiced and played just about anywhere it could find a floor and a couple of hoops. Crowds were small, media coverage was slim, and the future of the program was doubtful. That program officially became known as the University of Pittsburgh's Panthers in 1909. After H.C. Doc Carlson--a former Pitt football and basketball player as well as a physician by trade--became head coach in 1922, the program firmly established itself. In 1925, the Panthers had their first true home facility when they moved into the Pavilion--a gym beneath Pitt Stadium. Carlson would lead the Panthers to a pair of mythical national titles by the end of the 1920s. Pitt: 100 Years of Pitt Basketball is the definitive history of basketball at the University of Pittsburgh. From Charley Hyatt, Doc Carlson's first All-American, through sure and steady point guard Brandin Knight, some of college basketball's most influential players have worn blue and gold. Scoring whiz Don Hennon burst onto the scene in the '50s, followed by rugged Brian Generalovich in the '60s, and silky smooth Billy Knight in the '70s. Sam Bam Clancy helpedturn Pitt's program around in the late '70s, and when Pitt was invited to join the Big East Conference in 1982, the face of the program changed forever. Trained as a physician and ordained an Episcopal priest, Charles Todd Quintard (1824--1898) was a remarkable man by the standard of any generation. Born, raised, and educated in the North, he migrated to the South to pursue a medical career but was inspired by the bishop of Tennessee to serve the church. When Tennessee seceded from the Union in May 1861, Quintard joined the Confederate 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment as its chaplain and during the maelstrom of the Civil War kept a diary of his experiences. He later penned a memoir, which was published posthumously in 1905. Sam Davis Elliott combines a previously unpublished portion of the diary with Quintard's memoir in Doctor Quintard, Chaplain C.S.A. and Second Bishop of Tennessee. Quintard offers an unusual perspective and insightful observations gained from ministering to soldiers and civilians as both a priest and a physician. With thoughtful editing and annotating, Quintard's writings provide a valuable window into the high command of the Army of Tennessee at some of its more critical junctures and substantial detail of the last eight months of the war in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Quintard was present during the early fighting in Virginia, marched into Kentucky with Braxton Bragg, attended to the wounded at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, witnessed two Confederate retreats from Middle Tennessee, and watched the Federal armies overrun the Deep South in the spring of 1865. He met such diverse personages as Robert E. Lee and Federal Major General James H. Wilson; prayed with Bragg, Leonidas Polk, and John Bell Hood; shared a bed once with Nathan Bedford Forrest; and performed the sad duty of conducting the funerals of Patrick Cleburne and others killed at Franklin, Tennessee. Throughout his military service, he organized hospitals and relief efforts, filled in as a parish priest, and served as chaplain at large of the Army of Tennessee. After the war, Quintard became the prime mover in the revival of Leonidas Polk's dream of an Episcopal Church--sponsored University of the South, and in 1865 he was consecrated bishop of Tennessee, a position he held until his death. These interesting and lively war-year remembrances of one of the Confederacy's most exceptional characters shed new light on the little-known western theater's military, civilian, and religious fronts.

This volume provides the first book-length study of the controversial topic of Verb Second and related properties in a range of Medieval Romance varieties. It presents an examination and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data from Old French, Occitan, Sicilian, Venetian, Spanish, and Sardinian, in order to assess whether these were indeed Verb Second languages. Sam Wolfe argues that V-to-C movement is a point of continuity across all the medieval varieties - unlike in the modern Romance languages - but that there are rich patterns of synchronic and diachronic variation in the medieval period that have not previously been observed and investigated. These include differences in the syntax-pragmatics mapping, the locus of verb movement, the behaviour of clitic pronouns, the syntax of subject positions, matrix/embedded asymmetries, and the null argument properties of the languages in question. The book outlines a detailed formal cartographic analysis of both the attested synchronic patterns and the diachronic evolution of Romance clausal structure. The findings have widespread implications for the understanding of both the key typological property of Verb Second and the development of Latin into the modern Romance languages.
