We are to believe there was a time when The Birmingham Quean was just a poem: a mock-epic burlesque in which a fake pound coin told how she was won in a game of darts by a drag-queen called Britannia Spears. It parodied Pope ́s The Rape of the Lock, Byron ́s Don Juan and an anonymous eighteenth century novel, The Birmingham Counterfeit. The transformation of this bit of picaresque doggerel into the sprawling work barely contained by this cover is the central mystery of a ludic novel. It mirrors the unlikely story of a dirty little settlement of nailers and cutlers becoming the principle city of the Industrial Revolution by flooding the Restoration economy with counterfeit coins. What remains is an absurd scholarly edition of a poem recast as a futuristic dystopia in which nothing is authentic. It is also the tale of an impossible love affair that uncovers an impossible text by an impossible author. It is as strange, ironic, sombre, flashy and anarchic as the city to which it owes its existence.

Not only do many men have little interest in their own health, they will actively avoid other people, usually the women in their lives, any time they attempt to call attention to the obvious. Sometimes men accuse the women who love them of nagging. Sewell was that way. His wife and daughters pointed out that his lifestyle was like committing suicide on an installment plan. He embraced the "alpha male" attitude: "If I hurt, I will just tough it out and conquer the problem with determination and power." His new "self" doesn't pretend to be Superman. Radical life style change saved his life. The research that has gone into this book includes scientific studies supporting the conclusion that changing how you live will cure you and protect you better than drugs or surgery. So, Sewell doesn't really expect men to buy this book. He urges women to save men's lives and give them this book.

It’s no secret that superhero comics and their related media perpetuate a model of a straight, white, male hero at the expense of representing women and other minorities, but other narratives exist. Searching for Feminist Superheroes recognizes that female-led superhero comics, with diverse casts of characters and inclusive storytelling, exist on the margins of the mainstream superhero genre. But rather than focusing on these stories as marginalized, Sam Langsdale’s work on heroes such as Spider-Woman, America Chavez, and Ironheart locates the margins as a site of innovation and productivity, which have enabled the creation of feminist superhero texts.
