It starts from the premise that audiences are active participants who bring their own background knowledge and political standpoint to the communicative event. To operationalise this perspective, the volume draws on concepts from classical rhetoric alongside contemporary research in cognitive stylistics and cognitive linguistics (including schema theory, Text World Theory, Cognitive Grammar, and mind-modelling, amongst others). It examines the role played by the speaker’s identity, the arguments they make, and the emotions of the audience in the – often critical – reception of political text and talk, using a diversity of examples to illustrate this three-dimensional approach – from political speeches, interviews and newspaper articles, to more creative text-types such as politicised rap music, television satire and filmic drama. Myers grew up visually handicapped in the Jim Crow South and left home to attend the state school for the blind at Piney Woods. There in 1952 he joined Elmore James's band as a drummer and was featured on some of James's best-known recordings. Following the elder bluesman's death in 1963, Myers fronted bands of his own and recorded many well-received singles and albums. In 1986, Myers became the W. C. Handy Award-winning front man, vocalist, and harmonica player for Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. Throughout the book, Myers provides a historical context to a bygone era of the blues and reveals his own thoughts and feelings about the musicians with whom he played. And they are a list of who's who in the blues-Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Hound Dog Taylor, and Robert Lockwood Junior in addition to Elmore James. In one chapter, Myers describes a personalized deeper meaning to the blues. And in another he relates a series of anecdotes about the lighter side of life on the road. Contributions from Myers's father and stories from a boyhood friend round out the narrative. Dallas musician Brian “Hash Brown” Calway dissects the more technical aspects of Myers's harmonica style. Long-time friend and bandmate, Anson Funderburgh, weighs in with a chapter about their songwriting methods and offers some of his own recollections on their twenty years together.

Excavations at Mucking, Essex, between 1965 and 1978, revealed extensive evidence for a multiphase rural Romano-British settlement, perhaps an estate center, and five associated cemetery areas (170 burials) with different burial areas reserved for different groups within the settlement. The settlement demonstrated clear continuity from the preceding Iron Age occupation with unbroken sequences of artefacts and enclosures through the first century AD, followed by rapid and extensive remodeling, which included the laying out a Central Enclosure and an organized water supply with wells, accompanied by the start of large-scale pottery production. After the mid-second century AD the Central Enclosure was largely abandoned and settlement shifted its focus more to the Southern Enclosure system with a gradual decline though the 3rd and 4th centuries although continued burial, pottery and artefactual deposition indicate that a form of settlement continued, possibly with some low-level pottery production. Some of the latest Roman pottery was strongly associated with the earliest Anglo-Saxon style pottery suggesting the existence of a terminal Roman settlement phase that essentially involved an ‘Anglo-Saxon’ community. Given recent revisions of the chronology for the early Anglo-Saxon period, this casts an intriguing light on the transition, with radical implications for understandings of this period. Each of the cemetery areas was in use for a considerable length of time. Taken as a whole, Mucking was very much a componented place/complex; it was its respective parts that fostered its many cemeteries, whose diverse rites reflect the variability and roles of the settlement’s evidently varied inhabitants.

I wasn’t looking forward to going with my PI boyfriend to the rustic cabin in the woods of a crotchety local recluse who believed someone wanted him dead. I definitely wasn’t prepared for what happened next. Deb Taylor isn’t what you’d call a normal kind of guy. Maybe it’s the fact that he bears an eerie resemblance to the elusive mythological sasquatch. Or perhaps it’s the fact that he’s a six-and-a-half-foot-tall, hairy and muscular guy named Deb. It’s possible our new client had a premonition that someone was going to fatally pierce him with the sharp end of a shovel. It’s also very likely he’s lying. But when he hires Hal to find a stalker who seems to wish him ill, it’s his grumpiness that makes me think he might have a point. Anybody as crotchety as Deb Taylor couldn’t help but make enemies. Lots of them. However, given his size and strength, I thought it was unlikely he’d be an easy guy to damage. I’ll admit to being wrong on this one. Really. Really wrong.

Confessions of a Dying Thief is an in-depth ethnographic study of Sam and his world based on continuous contact with him for many years, on multiple interviews with his network of associates in crime and business, and on a series of interviews with him shortly before he died. The book updates and greatly expands the case study of Sam Goodman's fencing activity found in Steffensmeier's award-winning 1986 book The Fence: In the Shadow of Two Worlds. The book combines Sam's colorful narrative accounts with substantive commentary by the authors to provide a more nuanced portrayal of criminal careers, illegal enterprise, and the broad landscape comprising the entity called "crime." To more fully understand pathways into and out of crime as well as the social organization of illegal enterprise, the authors propose an integrative learning-opportunity-commitment framework that combines differential association/social learning theory and an extended conceptualization of criminal opportunity with a three-fold theory of commitment to crime. This framework offers an integrated and more complete way of understanding mechanisms that underlie criminal offending and criminal careers. It also recognizes the complexity and scope of the criminal landscape and its embeddedness in the fabric of the larger society, including its criminal justice system. Sam's illness and death are a sobering backdrop throughout the whole book. However, Confessions is not just a dying thief's intimate confessions. Rather, it is a rare and penetrating journey into the dynamics of criminal careers and the social organization of criminal enterprise, as experienced by a veteran thief and fence and his network of key associates.

Czarina is a heart-warming diction of an ordinary persecuted citizen of the Soviet Union. It has in its folds a blend of love and affection, jealousy and prejudice, fright and disgust, sex and adultery; all interwoven with great expertise reflecting the usual human instincts. The author does not attract the reader by creating undue suspense, nor does the story start with a bang. He puts the story to the reader in a natural way. Despite heros outstanding performance in written tests, he does not get the expected position after an interview for a governmental job. With frustration abound, the hero deserts his country through Afghanistan and reaches the UK. Without dragging, the author illustrates with perfection the plight of an asylum seeker. On arrival in the UK, he starts his life with menial jobs and with the passage of time, through devotion and hard work, he reaches the top echelons in the British society. While struggling to reach this enviable position he could not give as much attention to his wife as was expected by her. Being so neglected, she gets attracted to a handsome admiral of Royal Navy. I was gripped to complete reading in one go to find whether the Hero and heroine unite..Professor Sabir Jaffery This is an interesting story which holds the readers attention throughout. It has a good length and the plot hangs together well. The characters are believable and the book gives good insights into the Russian attitudes and character, as well as the functioning of the Soviet administration. The transition to a more open type of administration after the dissolution of the USSR is well handled. For Westerners there are many glimpses of life in an unfamiliar context. Workers who loaded and unloaded ships have formed a distinctive occupational group over the past two centuries. As trade expanded so the numbers of dock labourers increased and became concentrated in the major ports of the world. This ambitious two-volume project goes beyond existing individual studies of dock workers to develop a genuinely comparative international perspective over a long historical period. Volume 1 contains studies of 22 major ports worldwide. Built around an agreed framework of issues, these 'port studies' examine the type of workers who dominated dock labour, their race, class and ethnicity, the working conditions of dockers and the role of government as employer, arbitrator and supporter. The studies also detail how dockers organized their labour, patterns of strike action and involvement in political organizations. The structure of the port city is also outlined and descriptions given of the waterside environment. These areas of investigation form the basis for a series of 11 thematic studies which comprise Volume 2. Drawing on the information provided in the port studies, these essays identify important aspects and recurring themes, and explain how and why particular cases diverge from the rest. The final chapter of the book synthesizes the various approaches taken to offer a model which suggests several configurations of dock labour and presents suggestions for future research. This major scholarly achievement represents the most sustained attempt to date to provide a comparative international history of dock labour. An annotated bibliography completes this essential reference work.

At its most ambitious, 'political settlements analysis' (PSA) promises to explain why conflicts occur and states collapse, the conditions for their successful rehabilitation, different developmental pathways from peace, and how to better fit development policy to country context. Yet not all is well in the world of PSA. Rival definitions of the term abound, there are disagreements about its scope and the way it should be used, a growing schism between conflict specialists and economists, basic concepts are ambiguous and little progress has been made on measurement. Political Settlements and Development consequently has three main aims: to argue for a revised definition of a political settlement, capable of unifying its diverse strands, and opening new opportunities for the analysis of conflict and development; to put the concept on a more solid theoretical and scientific footing, providing a method for measuring and categorising political settlements, while using new data to analyse the relationship between political settlements and development; and finally, to examine the implications for policymakers. 'Images' tells the story of 'Jonah Daniel', through his own eyes. Though he is a normal teenager, he is one with a 'not so normal' past. The novel begins with a cherished memory of Jonah, a football match he played at school, which turns out to be the last memory he ever had with his Mom, Helen. The loner that he already was, the loss of his Mom, pushes Jonah further into deep corners of introversion. Feeling that, a change in surroundings would help him, he joins another school, and this is where the next part of the tale begins. He meets some very special characters. Badrinath, the intimidating but sympathetic badass, who becomes Jonah's friend. Vaiga Ranganathan, the girl about whom Jonah once wonders, the number of traits she has in common with Helen. Kritika, the senior girl, who always turns Jonah on. Jannat, a 3-year-old beauty, whom Jonah later calls, 'the light of my life'. Though Jonah never realises it, whatever had happened in his past, has always been a part of him. The way he thinks, the manner he feels, the demeanour with which he treats people, the kind of folks he is attracted to. The past has been leading and guiding Jonah for a long time, even without him knowing about it. The eventuality of an incident which Jonah could not prevent, finally brings his past onstage, which had been controlling him from behind the curtains for ever. How he deals with his past? The answer to this question, forms the crux of the story.
