Originally published in 1993, Medieval English Benedictine Liturgy is a detailed study of the liturgical use of medieval monasteries in England, spanning 500 years. The study examines the major votive observances that came to fruition in the twelfth century and later and argues that these important practices affected earlier monastic observances. The book’s emphasis on Anglo-Saxon liturgy provides a bridge between the practices of the English Benedictines before and after the Conquest. The book also traces the chronological progress of three individual observances and extends where possible into the sixteenth century. The book argues that, at a broader level, while liturgy has been recognized as an indispensable part of the study of the context and use of medieval chant and polyphony.
Robinson sets up a dialogue between feminist critical theory and contemporary women's fiction in order to argue for a new way of reading the specificity of women's writing. Through theoretically informed readings of novels by Doris Lessing, Angela Carter, and Gayl Jones, the author argues that female subjectivity is engendered in discourse through the woman writer's strategic engagement in representational systems that rely on a singular figure of Woman for coherence. Through this engagement, women's self-representation emerges as a process through which women take up multiple and contradictory positions in relation to different hegemonic discursive systems, and through which they engender themselves as subjects. Finally, Engendering the Subject suggests how women's fiction can provide a model for a feminist practice of reading that would simultaneously work against the historical containment of Woman, and for the empowerment of women as subjects of cultural practices.

Ordinary Americans often bring family and neighborhood problems to court, seeking justice or revenge. The litigants in these local squabbles encounter law at its boundaries in the corridors of busy city courthouses, in the offices of court clerks, and in the church parlors used by mediation programs. Getting Justice and Getting Even concerns the legal consciousness of working class Americans and their experiences with court and mediation. Following cases into and through the courts, Sally Engle Merry provides an ethnographic study of local law and of the people who use it in a New England city. The litigants, primarily white, native-born, and working class, go to court because as part of mainstream America they feel entitled to use its legal system. Although neither powerful nor highly educated, they expect the law's support when they face intolerable infringements of their rights, privacy, and safety. Yet as personal problems enter the legal system and move through mediation sessions, clerk's hearings, and prosecutor's conferences, the citizen plaintiff rapidly loses control of the process. Court officials and mediators interpret and characterize the meaning of these experiences, reframing and categorizing them in different discourses. Some plaintiffs yield to these interpretations, but others resist, struggling to assert their own version of the problem. Ultimately, Merry exposes the paradox of legal entitlement. While going to court allows an individual to dominate domestic relationships, the litigant must increasingly yield control of the situation to the court that supplies that power.
Music in Wales has long been a neglected area. Scholars have been deterred both by the need for a knowledge of the Welsh language, and by the fact that an oral tradition in Wales persisted far later than in other parts of Britain, resulting in a limited number of sources with conventional notation. Sally Harper provides the first serious study of Welsh music before 1650 and draws on a wide range of sources in Welsh, Latin and English to illuminate early musical practice. This book challenges and refutes two widely held assumptions - that music in Wales before 1650 is impoverished and elusive, and that the extant sources are too obscure and fragmentary to warrant serious study. Harper demonstrates that there is a far wider body of source material than is generally realized, comprising liturgical manuscripts, archival materials, chronicles and retrospective histories, inventories of pieces and players, vernacular poetry and treatises. This book examines three principal areas: the unique tradition of cerdd dant (literally 'the music of the string') for harp and crwth; the Latin liturgy in Wales and its embellishment, and 'Anglicised' sacred and secular materials from c.1580, which show Welsh music mirroring English practice. Taken together, the primary material presented in this book bears witness to a flourishing and distinctive musical tradition of considerable cultural significance, aspects of which have an important impact on wider musical practice beyond Wales.
Oxophytodienoic acid reductases (OPRs) are flavoenzymes closely related to Old Yellow Enzyme (OYE) from Saccharomyces. The physiological role of plant OPRs could only be clarified for OPR3: OPR3 from tomato and Arabidopsis reduce the double bond of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group of (9S,13S)-oxophytodienoic acid (OPDA), the precursor of the phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA). OPR3 is therefore an important step for JA biosynthesis and the following JA-triggered defensive and developmental adaptations of the plant. Since the production of phytohormones, including JA, is regulated in an extremely time- and tissue specific manner, the regulatory step of JA-biosynthesis was sought. The conversion of OPDA by OPR3 was proposed as the rate-limiting step in biosynthesis as OPR3 turned out to form a self-inhibiting dimer when crystallized. In the OPR3 crystal, the L6-loop from each protomer reaches into the active site cavity of the other protomer. The dimerization-dependent block of the active site provides a hypothetical mechanism for the regulation of OPR3 activity. Interestingly, two sulfate ions were enclosed in the interacting site of the protomers, suggesting that the dimer might be stabilized in vivo by reversible sulfation or phosphorylation of the tyrosine 364(SlOPR3) or 365 (AtOPR3), respectively. The role of this hypothesized sulfation/phosphorylation was subject of this study. Neither sulfation nor phosphorylation of Y365 could be detected by mass spectrometry. Hence, studies were continued with an in vitro approach where OPR3 was expressed with sulfotyrosine incorporated co-translationally at position 365 (Y365SY). Biochemical characterization led to contradictory results: On the one hand, interaction strength of Y365SY was unaltered in comparison to wild-type OPR3, while on the other hand, activity of Y365SY was reduced. Closer examination indicated that substrate binding or product release was reduced in Y365SY. These changes could be traced back to the additional charge of the SO42—ion, which leads to a narrowing of the entrance to the active site cavity. With this finding, the proposed regulating mechanism by sulfation/phosphorylation is still valid, but independent from dimerization. In order to link this potential regulatory mechanism with a post-translational modification in vivo, an untargeted screen was performed, in which OPR3 was expressed as a fusion protein with a promiscous biotin ligase (BioID2). With this method, potentially interacting proteins were biotinylated in vivo and subsequently isolated and analyzed by MS/MS. Many candidate proteins were identified for OPR3, including kinases and phosphatases. Additionally, OPR1, OPR2 and OPR4 from Arabidopsis were also expressed as BioID2 fusion proteins in order to clarify their physiological role. The most promising results were obtained for OPR4, which was found to be association with stress granule and P-body proteins.
