Legendary architecture practice SOM presents 40+ of their most transformative works in the sixth and latest volume, SOM: Works by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 2009-2019. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is one of the most influential architecture studios in the world, with a body of work that includes some of the most important buildings and urban designs of our time. SOM: Works by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 2009-2019 is the sixth and latest volume in the series to cover every era of SOM’s history, from the iconic Modernist works of the 1950s to the projects of today. Documenting SOM’s global body of work—which ranges from a prototype for a biophilic breathing wall to the new headquarters for NATO in Brussels—SOM: Works by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 2009-2019 demonstrates how SOM has come to hold its unparalleled position as a steward of international architecture. This new volume details SOM’s approach to designing impactful, complex projects in a globalized world—an approach which marries a deep bench of global expertise with a commitment to honoring culture and people in the communities where SOM works. In this volume, explore SOM’s mission to address the most urgent challenge of our time: climate change. Working in pursuit of a zero-carbon built world, SOM’s designers are pioneering new approaches to adaptive reuse, cultivating emerging technologies including machine learning, inventing new tools to optimize building performance, and beyond. Organized chronologically, the monograph encompasses SOM’s most significant projects of the past decade, across all building types and locations, highlighting the studio’s unique ability to design and execute complex, technical, and efficient structures. The roster includes Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world, Manhattan Loft Gardens, a new vertical community in London, the twisting Ningbo Bank of China headquarters, the ‘floating cube’ new Federal Courthouse in Los Angeles, the master plan for the Cornell Tech Campus on Roosevelt Island, the reimagined Strand Theatre in San Francisco, Chicago’s Optimo Hat Company Headquarters, Denver Union Station, and of course, One World Trade Center. Through in-depth essays, architecture writer and critic Sam Lubell dives into SOM’s radically rigorous approach to design in today’s complex world, exploring the unique ideas cultivated within the studio and how those ideas are transformed into transformative spaces across the globe. As with the previous five volumes in the series, renowned design studio Pentagram led the book’s design in collaboration with SOM. Featuring 500 images, the book includes thorough profiles and never-before-published photographs, plans, and drawings of the studio’s most recent works.
With Tripas, Brandon Som follows up his award-winning debut with a book of poems built out of a multicultural, multigenerational childhood home, in which he celebrates his Chicana grandmother, who worked nights on the assembly line at Motorola, and his Chinese American father and grandparents, who ran the family corner store. Enacting a cómo se dice poetics, a dialogic poem-making that inventively listens to heritage languages and transcribes family memory, Som participates in a practice of mem(oir), placing each poem’s ear toward a confluence of history, labor, and languages, while also enacting a kind of “telephone” between cultures. Invested in the circuitry and circuitous routes of migration and labor, Som’s lyricism weaves together the narratives of his transnational communities, bringing to light what is overshadowed in the reckless transit of global capitalism and imagining a world otherwise—one attuned to the echo in the hecho, the oracle in the órale.
This book covers important performance characteristics of aeronautical structures. The subject matter is presented in laymans terms without complicated mathematical details. This has been a basic one quarter course for safety, contracting, maintenance, research management, professional engineers and other professionals dealing with related aeronautical and systems engineering fields in the US Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The topics covered are aircraft design/ analysis, performance and their maintenance. The book addresses response characteristics of materials, and types of failures in aeronautical structures (e.g., fatigue, creep, fracture, buckling, and stress concentration) in both conventional metallic structures and composites. In most of the cases, as can be seen from publications resulting from AFIT masters level and PhD students work (Chapter 11), this subject matter was one of the preparatory courses for their thesis or dissertation. The author has more than 40 years experience in industry, research and academia including teaching this course for 5 years in AFIT.
Gitanjali, the book of poems for which Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, was in fact a collection of songs. Much of what Tagore experienced-joy and frustration, grief and devastation-was expressed through music, and during his lifetime, Tagore was most renowned for his songwriting. The distinction of his musical oeuvre lay in the near-perfect balance he achieved between the evocative lyrics, the matching melody and the rhythmic structure in which each song was bound. The Singer and His Song is a unique biography of Tagore with music as its leitmotif. It traces the musical journey of the poet with anecdotes and allusions, and includes translations of some of his most resonant songs. Written in elegant prose and accompanied by relevant photographs and paintings, this highly original book is a fitting tribute to Tagore's enduring musical legacy.
This book presents the Persian Baburnama, a key primary source and the earliest record of Babur’s memoirs. It provides a fresh treatment to the source material and highlights vivid accounts of the historical events of the time. The paintings are divided thematically, offering a unique and rare perspective into the Mughal world. Accompanied by a detailed Introduction, the volume also touches upon narrative art and analyses the influence of European Renaissance art on Mughal painting. With over 150 Mughal paintings and illustrations in colour, this volume will be an important sourcebook for scholars and researchers of Medieval Indian, especially Mughal, history, and art historians, as well as connoisseurs of art and the general reader.

Is there a chance that public or private research and development institutions can improve the efficiency of the R&D process? This book gives a positive answer by designing an integrated concept of the science technology cycle and the innovation system of each technology. The position of a new technology in the sciencetechnology cycle is identified by several indicators from patent analysis, citations and market information data. The innovation system supports the search for a comprehensive understanding of all important stakeholders of an innovation, possible obstacles and related policies. The application of the methodology leads to convincing results: the hype of the PEM fuel cell activities could have been identified at the end of the 1990s as the phase of euphoria, but not as a situation close to market entry in the car or boiler markets.
This volume depicts the life and times of the Mughal emperor Jahangir in the light of his memoirs, Jahangirnama, popularly known as Tuzuk-i Jahangiri. With its fresh treatment of source material and a vivid account of historical events, the book tells the history of Jahangir’s India through his intimate and confessional memoirs incorporated in the genre of Mughal manuscript painting. The work is noteworthy for its historical portraits as well as Jahangir’s visual realism, his remarkable knowledge of natural history, and the perceptive and detailed descriptions of the world around him. Moving away from conventional historical writing, the book is a psychological study of an individual, his innate qualities, behavioural moves and instinctive affinities. Jahangir’s memoirs reveal deeper facets of him as a person as well as a poet, aesthete, connoisseur of painting and a keen observer of nature, both human and that of the natural world. The author also includes other contemporary literature of the period that narrate Jahangir’s life, such as Akbarnama, Ma’asir-i Jahangiri, Iqbalnama-i Jahangiri, Intikhab-i Jahangiri, Tatimma-i Waqi’at-i Jahangiri and Zakhirat-ul Khwanin, as well as Jesuits accounts and travelogues. He further analyses the influence of European Renaissance art on the history of Mughal paintings. A first of its kind, this book will greatly interest scholars and researchers of medieval history, Indian history, Mughal history, art history, popular culture and South Asian studies, as well as the general reader.

An engrossing, personal view of the public events that have shaped India's recent history From Partition to Operation Bluestar provides an engrossing, personal view of the public events that have shaped India's recent history, written by a man who had a ringside view of these. As we follow Som Nath Dhar's career in journalism, government and the world of covert intelligence, the book transports us from pre-Partition Punjab to Delhi and Kashmir, with side trips to East Africa and Europe. Dhar writes in a compelling, journalistic style about the turbulence of Partition; the heady experience of working closely with India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru; the dramatic events leading up to the 1947 invasion and accession of Kashmir; and later developments such as Indira Gandhi's accession to power, her fall from grace and eventual return to power, and much else. Full of charming anecdotes, the book deepens our understanding of recent Indian history and provides insights into the character of many of the personalities who shaped it.

This book explores the idea of an India-centric leadership model, presenting an in-depth research study of strategic leadership theories and applying them to India’s unique culture.
The crises emanating from the Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 Pandemic have underscored, the emergency role of the State and its smooth, seamless reactivation, for situations when private activity and markets are disrupted. In many countries, SOEs have been a crucial part in delivering on that effort as agents of the State. While SOEs are increasingly sought to play a role during emergency situations, evidence suggests that they misallocate capital and mismanage resources. This is indicative of the conflicts of interests in owning and regulating enterprises as well as between the commercial and non-commercial objectives of SOEs, crony capitalism, the private agenda of public officials, internal management of SOEs, the significant role played by state owned banks and financial institutions and the conflicts that arise in the State's primary role vs. its ownership of enterprises. The studies of eight countries from different regions undertaken for this book, provide answers to these key policy questions related to state capitalism. Generalizing from the results of multi-country studies to arrive at universally applicable predictions, prescriptions, and policy recommendations, is inherently difficult. Individual countries are quite different in their socio-economic, historical, political, and institutional circumstances. So are their experiences, as the eight country studies highlight, even as the book attempts to extrude, from available research, the principal common characteristics of, and practices followed by, successful SOEs independently of country context. Among other conditions, the two most important conclusions that can be drawn from the country studies are that competition and regulation rather than ownership per se is key to efficiency.
The Chandogya Upanisad: The culture it reflects is remote and archaic, the texture of its ritualistic and contemplative symbolism thick and dense-virtually a closed book for us moderns. A sustained self-submitting attentiveness, however, discloses its language as resonating disturbingly modern notes, focusing our attention on many of our pathologies as well as our possibilities, pathologies and possibilities that have escaped the notice of us moderns. The spirit of quiet hermeneutics that characterizes this study illumines many an opaque spot in this text, solves many an interpretive puzzle, turns many of its `archaic naivetes` into living and compelling profundities. We are made to realize that what some moderns call Gestell is far more primordial than they would envisage it to be, far more ominous and primitive, tragic and persistent. A radical transformation is required, an ontological transformation. Not mere `a masterly exposition` of an ancient text is, therefore, this study, but `an authentic springboard for fresh philosophical thinking fecundating (the) two shores of the human experience: East and West`. The first three (published) Vols. are on (i) Isa, Kena, Katha and Prasna Upanisads; (ii) Mundaka and Mandukya Upanisad with Gaudapada Karika; (iii) Taittiriya and Aitareya Upanisads.

Personnel Management is a business function and business is a value-adding activity. A business, be it agriculture, manufacturing, mining, trading, or any other activity, is a process of conversion for the purpose of satisfying human needs and thereby adding value. Such conversion takes various forms. It may be in terms of quantity, quality, time, or space. All such conversions are done primarily through human effort. Therefore, the need for personnel management arose since the time business activities required organized application of human effort. The history of personnel management is thus very old. Incidentally, persons are generally averse to physical and repetitive work. It had, therefore, been a challenge for those managing other people to get the work done by them when it was not inspiring in terms of work content or remuneration. This book, in a historical perspective, explains how the personnel managers handled the challenge in different ages, and how the evolving socio-economic environment influenced their approaches and actions. A lot has changed in terms of personnel management over the years. With economic liberalization, personnel management is no longer a job of managing persons. This book also covers the larger activities of organizational management and beyond. In the days to come, personnel managers will have to be messengers of social harmony and growth, and an embodiment of trust. And then they will be able to serve the organizations and their employees the best.
