Community-oriented conservation of natural resources and promotion and protection of trees in drylands are examples to deal with climatic adversities. There are 15 chapters and first five deals with physiography of Rajasthan, drylands ecology, problems of land degradation, its economic evaluation and the approaches and strategies of restoration and rehabilitation. Next two chapters describe the problems of sand drift, salinity, water logging and effluent inflicted areas and strategies to control them. Chapters 8-10 deal with seed production, quality planting materials, genetic improvement, propagation and planting techniques. Chapters 11-12 describe methods of rain water harvesting and irrigation, and resources conservation for seed sowing and favouring regeneration and successions. Effective management of pests/diseases in nurseries and plantation, growth and yield prediction equations and models, and people's perception and participation in managing forest resources have been described in last 3 chapters. Purpose of this publication is to strengthen the forest functionaries and readers with wide ranging knowledge on land degradation, desertification and eco-biology of drylands; and methods to restore and rehabilitate degrading forest (lands) to increase forest cover, enhance resilience and people livelihoods and improve environmental conditions. Academician, researchers, forest managers, non-government organizations, extension agents and environmentalists can use it in developing, conserving and managing drylands ecosystems for its long lasting beneficial effects. This book is also useful to policy makers in effective planning of restoring, protecting and conserving dryland's ecological and socioeconomic services.

As he travels in the Himalayas he encounters people from many parts of the world seeking peace, happiness, tranquility and a meaning in their sufferings and life. Life outside his hermitage is very different and he is saddened with the injustice, insensitivity and the unhappy lives of people. He seeks a different enlightenment and believes that institutions including hermitages where he spent many years, temples, organized religion or governments unable to provide the means for peace and happiness in spite of the many organized entities intruding in peoples lives individual unhappiness and disillusionment were increasing. Since what men seek lie within hence solutions to ones discontent is personal. He finds a simple solution at the end of his travels that will end mans misery and brings joy back in their lives.

People living on the Indian subcontinent have been a sharply divided lot for a very long time in spite of belonging to the same established respected older civilization. Our divisiveness resulted in inviting repeated assaults by uncivilized Arabs and savages from other parts of Asia. This led to foreign subjugation for a millennium first by Islamic invaders and looters; then by Europeans who came as traders but became rulers. The entry of aliens led to unabashed proselytizing into their newer religions. It may not be wrong to say that 99 percent of Muslims and Christians living on the subcontinent are converts from Hinduism (that has been more a way of life rather than a watertight religion for two millennia or more). This means todays inhabitants are from the same civilization and culturally speaking Hindustanis. However, a proliferation of alien religions did aggravate and compound divisiveness. The British ruled the country for two centuries or so, and did the maximum damage to our character, morale and psyche. After the First War of Independence the British promulgated pretty stiff laws especially the Police Act of 1861 to keep their slaves under tight leash. Worse still they introduced Macaulay system of education in English to wean us away from our cultural moorings, heritage, literature, moral values and our own Sanskrit language. Indian social religious and educational reformers Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Sahjanand, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Swami Dayanand Sarasvati, Swami Vivekananda and Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh as well as the likes of them brought back the pride of our civilization and culture. Their influence was apparent from the beginning of 19th century in the fields of politics, public administration, and education, as well as strengthening Hinduism. This first awakening from slumber or hibernation ignited the minds of revolutionaries who selflessly and untiringly worked hard on the soils of the subcontinent and the foreign lands culminating in throwing out deeply entrenched British lock, stock and barrel. Not so nationalistic but opportunistic Congress party led by their self-serving trio of stalwarts Gandhi, his adopted son Nehru and lieutenant Patel got the subcontinent partitioned and formed government in divided India. Congress party ruled but NOT served Hindustan for 90 percent of the time since independence by strictly following British Divide and Rule policy to perfection without changing/improving archaic British laws. Being communal, Congress aggravated the divisiveness thus bringing untold misery to the masses in the form of communal strife and Hindu-Muslim riots repeatedly. The prolonged misrule by those corrupt inept rudderless politicians including the decade under its economist dummy PM heading the most corrupt and arrogant government ever in the history of independent country brought in lawlessness, fragile environment, grossly inadequate infrastructure, increasing terrorism and Maoism/Naxalism, ever mounting inflation, sky-rocketing corruption, gargantuan scams, bankrupt economy, policy paralysis, stalling of reforms, and what not. The absolute number of the poor today is far more than total population of newly born country in 1947. This grave crisis-like situation warranted a second awakening in 21st century. Expectedly Hindustanis rose to the occasion once again, decimated the corrupt Congress and voted for a change by electing a visionary, strong, and honest PM from BJP with a thumping majority. This gentleman is a dynamic, focused, highly optimistic, staunchly nationalistic real leader unlike the pygmies of Congress. The task ahead is dauntingly stupendous. Modi started showing promise during his first 60 days. The damage done in 60 years may take ten years, if not more, to repair and actual proper turnaround thus placing this once great country on track to reclaim its lost genuine glory. Although independence was ushered in 67 years ago yet freedom is still awaited. That will require imminent electoral, intellectual, judicial, police, political and social reforms together with building moral character and bringing meritocracy in every appointment by doing away with the Congress policy of favours, quotas and reservations for the undeserving. Very much like Narendra Modi, the first PM to be born after independence and heading the youngest India-educated ministry, all of us have to remain optimistic and vigilant. We must perform our duties diligently as law-abiding faithful but demanding citizens alive to the times!

Our new semester series, Rosemary-An Activity-based Integrated Course for Classes 1 to 5, has meticulously followed the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), 2023. Pramanas, Panchakosha Vikas, and Panchpadi, the three main constituents, have been used significantly through the explanations, examples, and exercises used in this series. It means the focus has shifted to the process of learning. This series envisages conceptual understanding as a continuous process. The books for Classes 1 and 2 include English, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, and General Knowledge. For Classes 3 to 5, the subjects expand to include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and General Knowledge. In developing this educational series, considerable attention has been focused on creating an engaging and enjoyable learning environment. This approach aims to establish a solid educational foundation for young learners, contributing to their all-around growth and development at every educational level. The series is characterised by several notable features: • Integrates key educational concepts with visually appealing activities, interactive games, and practical real-world examples • Methodically structured and comprehensive exercises, ensuring thorough assessment and understanding • Robust online support, including animated tutorials, interactive modules, subject-specific videos, and digital books (exclusively for teacher use), tailored to meet the needs of each topic ENGLISH: Combines with historical and contemporary elements, it focuses on interest-based selections to engage learners and improve memory retention. It emphasises the four key language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) with clear grammar explanations. MATHEMATICS: With engaging and thorough presentation of concepts, it is suitable for all learning levels, using a graded and age-appropriate approach. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: It focuses on analysis and inquiry, encouraging learning through discussion, observation, and conversation. SCIENCE: It offers meaningful learning by connecting scientific concepts to students' everyday experiences and the natural world. SOCIAL STUDIES: In this subject, innovative teaching methods are used to enhance life skills, civic understanding, and prepare students for life's challenges. Online support in the form of animated Lesson, interactive exercises, topic-wise videos and E-books (for Teachers only) as per the requirement of the subject. Teachers' Resource Book (TRB) includes Lesson Plan and Learning Objectives along with the answers of the questions to facilitate teaching.
