The current book attempts to fill the gap in one of the major subject of land drainage that will have a major impact on production and productivity of irrigated lands. The book Titled `Drainage Engineering: Principles and Practices` deals with the subject of surface and subsurface drainage to reclaim waterlogged salt affected soils. Based on the course curricula as suggested by Deans´ committee constituted by ICAR, the current publication has been divided into 11 Chapters covering all the facets of land drainage as applied to agriculture. Each chapter covers one of the related issues beginning with general introduction to water logging, soil salinity and land drainage in Chapter 1.Surface drainage methods, an essential intervention in monsoon climatic regions and as supplement to the subsurface drainage are included in Chapter 2. Drainage investigations, a precursor to problem diagnosis and to assemble the drainage design parameters are included in Chapter 3. The drainage design procedures such as assessment of drainage depth, spacing and capacity of drains forms the subject matter of Chapter 4. While drainage materials are discussed in Chapter 5, drainage construction procedures and methodologies to monitor and evaluate completed projects are included in Chapter 6. Some of the new drainage techniques such as mole, interceptor, vertical and bio-drainage have been included in Chapter 7 since these can either be applied singly or in integration with horizontal subsurface drainage. Chapters 8-10 deal withreclamation of salt affected soils,acid soils and management of saline water. Eco-friendly reuse and disposal of saline drainage wateralso form the subject matter of discussion of Chapter 10. Cost calculations, socio-economic and environmental issues associated with drainage projects have been included in final chapter 11. Glossary of terms has been added for quick overview of the terms used in the book. Clearly, each and every aspect of surface and subsurface drainage for agricultural lands has been covered in the book.Besides covering the principles of land drainage, field practices have been included making the book a handy tool for specialized training programmes on land drainage. Land and water, the two crucial natural resources for agriculture, are decreasing as a result of burgeoning population of the country. At the same time, various forms of degradation are taking a toll on the productivity of these resources so much so that large areas have been taken out of plough. Current assessment reveal that already 6.73 million ha area has gone out of cultivation because of excessive salts or high sodicity and this area is likely to expand to 20 million ha by 2050 because of the faulty irrigation and drainage water management practices being adopted in irrigation commands. Of the current affected area, more than 50% is sodic in nature, which requires some kind of chemical amendment for reclamation. While our knowledge and understanding of the causes, nature and harmful effects of sodic soils have tremendously increased, availability of gypsum on account of environmental problems on its mining has caused concerns. Apparently, there is a need to push for other amendments especially the industrial wastes and publish the information in practical terms for various stakeholders. This book is an attempt in this direction. Taking into account the widely varying needs of the clients, the chapters of this book have been organized to include history, origin and genesis of sodic lands, basic principles of diagnosis, nature and properties of sodic lands, amendments, reclamation package and alternate land management. Since sodic water irrigation is one of the factors in the formation of sodic lands, a separate chapter deals with this issue highlighting the extent and distribution, chemical characteristic and management options for the use of sodic water. The economic analysis procedures and socio-economic issues of sodic land reclamation are included in a separate chapter with appropriate case studies. Since latest scientific information on new technologies with case studies is included, we believe that this book is an improvement over the existing books and is a useful addition to the literature on this subject. In our view the information contained in this book would be handy to field practitioners in the Government Departments and NGOs to plan and undertake large sodic land reclamation projects. Since the basic principles and practices have been very well elucidated, the book can be used as a text book in agricultural and engineering colleges. It can also be used as a source material in training programs being organized by various scientific organizations. We believe that the book would prove to be a handy reference resource to all those interested in sustainable irrigated agriculture for the food and nutritional security of the nation.

The Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine also offers a unique exposure to the problems in many parts of the world. Tuberculosis, the “number one” treatable condition has been extensively covered; and special topics such as multi-drug resistance, directly observed therapy, TB prevention, nonpharmacologic approaches and extapulmonary tuberculosis are particularly relevant. Many countries are facing a growing burden of noncommunicable respiratory diseases. They have become the second leading cause of death after injuries, and their impact on indirect costs such as loss of work and home productivity is enormous. These problems are addressed and measures of prevention such as smoking cessation are included. Other special challenges including topics such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, climate change, poisoning with pesticides, snakebite toxicity, pulmonary manifestations of tropical infections and industrial accidents such as the tragedy seen in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, with methyl isocyanate, have been well covered. There are several nontraditional sections as well that are practical and especially helpful to the practicing physician.
