The aim of this book is to collect all available informations about sheep production to improve traditional methods. Most of the previous sheep books have concentrated on wool, but the emphasis in the present book is more in lamb with trend of the increasing importance of meat and milk from sheep. It is hoped that this book will be able to fill a gap in the literature for the students of sheep production, working for their graduate and post-graduate degrees in the field of veterinary and agricultural sciences. It is hoped that the book should also meet the need of the great number of those with veterinary and agricultural degrees in every walk of life-farmers and advisors alike. It is also hoped that it will provide reference materials and additional self study guide for research workers and veterinary practitioners.

Horse gram is a pulse and fodder crop native to Southeast Asia and tropical Africa. India is the only country cultivating horse gram on a large acreage, where it is being used for human food. It is a versatile crop and can be grown from near sea level to 1800m. It is a drought-tolerant crop plant and can be grown successfully with low rainfall. Global efforts to conserve the horse gram germplasm are lacking, as the crop does not attract much notice. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) conserved only 35 accessions of Macrotyloma uniflorum in its gene bank. Protabase (Plant Resources of Tropical Africa Database), responsible for germplasm conservation for African countries, has only 21 accessions in the National Gene Bank of Kenya. Australian Tropical Crops and Forages Genetic Resources Centre, Biloela, Queensland has 38 accessions of horse gram. In India, the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, is a nodal agency for the collection, conservation and documentation of horse gram germplasm; a total of 1627 accessions of horse gram are conserved in its gene bank. About 1161 accessions were systematically characterized and evaluated during 1999–2004 in different research institutions in India. No information on genomic resources is available for horse gram. However, the genetic information available for much researched related legume species could be useful in linkage map construction and for tagging and mapping of useful genes.

The book presents a comprehensive picture of the rural development programmes in chronological order since first five year plan to the eighth five year plan. Attempt has been made to present the temporal dimensions of policies and objectives being adopted, extended and/or modified after reviewing the needs of identified target area and/or target groups. Also analyses the trend of rural development programmes being implemented in the region with their changing philosophy and composition from Community Development Programme (CDP), Small Farmers Development Agencies (SFDA) to Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP). The third part gives first hand information on the basis of village and household questionnaires especially developed for the purpose, not only have helped in evaluating the impact of various rural development programmes but also in assessing the participation of beneficiaries and that of the implementing agencies.
The term "alkali soil"is employed to refer to soils that have a high exchangeable-sodium-percentage; and "saline soil" is used in connection with soils having a high value for the electrical conductivity of the saturation extract. This handbook was first issued in multilithed form in 1947, and it has been widely distributed in this country and abroad. The handbook is intended primarily as a practical guide for those who are confroted with soil, plant, and water problems involving salinity and alkali The first five chapters provide a basis for the evaluation and interpretaion of measure-ments The procedures and measuring methods given in chapters 6,7, and 8 are those with which the Laboratory has had experience, and they are believed to have general applicability in the diagnosis and improvement of saline and alkali soils. This handbook is the result of the combined efforts of the entire staff of the salinity Laboratry.
The book will be very useful for students and researchers of ethnobotany, economic botany, bioresources, traditional universities, phytomedicines, Indian systems of medicines, plant genetic resources, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical houses, corporate houses, herbal industry, policy planners, institutional libraries etc. and laymen alike.
This textbook deals with optimization of dynamic systems. The motivation for undertaking this task is as follows: There is an ever increasing need to produce more efficient, accurate, and lightweight mechanical and electromechanical de vices. Thus, the typical graduating B.S. and M.S. candidate is required to have some familiarity with techniques for improving the performance of dynamic systems. Unfortunately, existing texts dealing with system improvement via optimization remain inaccessible to many of these students and practicing en gineers. It is our goal to alleviate this difficulty by presenting to seniors and beginning graduate students practical efficient techniques for solving engineer ing system optimization problems. The text has been used in optimal control and dynamic system optimization courses at the University of Deleware, the University of Washington and Ohio University over the past four years. The text covers the following material in a straightforward detailed manner: • Static Optimization: The problem of optimizing a function that depends on static variables (i.e., parameters) is considered. Problems with equality and inequality constraints are addressed. • Numerical Methods: Static Optimization: Numerical algorithms for the solution of static optimization problems are presented here. The methods presented can accommodate both the unconstrained and constrained static optimization problems. • Calculus of Variation: The necessary and sufficient conditions for the ex tremum of functionals are presented. Both the fixed final time and free final time problems are considered.
This book provides comprehensive, indepth and up to date information on all aspects of silvipasture, wasteland management, forage production for livestock, tree - pasture interactions, establishment and management of silvipastoral systems and silvipastoral perspectives for climate change mitigation. For the first time in India, authors have attempted to divide whole of India in to four major natural silvipastoral covers which will make the book a matter of interest for all. Further, it also deals with the livestock production and silvipasture in light of contemporary issues like climate change while emphasizing future thrust areas in degraded land development and silvipasture. The glossary of important related terms and scientific names of common trees, grasses and legumes in the end increases its usefulness. This book is written in simple language and will be of great interest for students, teachers, researchers and planners.
Land and water, the two crucial natural resources for agriculture, are decreasing as a result of burgeoning population of the country. At the same time, various forms of degradation are taking a toll on the productivity of these resources so much so that large areas have been taken out of plough. Current assessment reveal that already 6.73 million ha area has gone out of cultivation because of excessive salts or high sodicity and this area is likely to expand to 20 million ha by 2050 because of the faulty irrigation and drainage water management practices being adopted in irrigation commands. Of the current affected area, more than 50% is sodic in nature, which requires some kind of chemical amendment for reclamation. While our knowledge and understanding of the causes, nature and harmful effects of sodic soils have tremendously increased, availability of gypsum on account of environmental problems on its mining has caused concerns. Apparently, there is a need to push for other amendments especially the industrial wastes and publish the information in practical terms for various stakeholders. This book is an attempt in this direction. Taking into account the widely varying needs of the clients, the chapters of this book have been organized to include history, origin and genesis of sodic lands, basic principles of diagnosis, nature and properties of sodic lands, amendments, reclamation package and alternate land management. Since sodic water irrigation is one of the factors in the formation of sodic lands, a separate chapter deals with this issue highlighting the extent and distribution, chemical characteristic and management options for the use of sodic water. The economic analysis procedures and socio-economic issues of sodic land reclamation are included in a separate chapter with appropriate case studies. Since latest scientific information on new technologies with case studies is included, we believe that this book is an improvement over the existing books and is a useful addition to the literature on this subject. In our view the information contained in this book would be handy to field practitioners in the Government Departments and NGOs to plan and undertake large sodic land reclamation projects. Since the basic principles and practices have been very well elucidated, the book can be used as a text book in agricultural and engineering colleges. It can also be used as a source material in training programs being organized by various scientific organizations. We believe that the book would prove to be a handy reference resource to all those interested in sustainable irrigated agriculture for the food and nutritional security of the nation.
This book embodies twenty four chapters. The methodology of tools and techniques has been given due place in these chapters.
