Gender issues are an indispensable component of Indian social system. Women are career oriented along with the role of home-making. Women are faced with many gender issues as paid workers. Women are discriminated because they are considered as fair sex. Differentiation exists both at inhibited and exhibited levels. Roles are assigned according to gender in the form of stereotypic roles. As a matter of fact sensitivity exists among both the sexes as how jobs are allotted, work is carried on etc. As such, women are faced with many issues in the present set up of society. Modernity has created certain conflicting and anxiety situations among the women due to laxity in shedding traditional outlook and at the same time in assimilating the modern outlook. Modernization has to a very great extent been able to break the shackles of tradition and opt for employment which has brought about dramatic and drastic changes in their beliefs, attitudes and values. Employment has brought about socio-economic emancipation of women pushing equalitarian and egalitarian values to the forefront. The battle for gender justice has been a long drawn struggle. To bring reform in the social, economic and educational fields there is need for certain attitudinal changes that comprise change of contracts, change of relations and change of values.

Dr Aston has here presented a critical edition of Peirol's works, with a substantial introduction, notes and a glossary. His introduction holds a life of Peirol, a note on the manuscripts, a section on the order of the poems, notes on their style, and a bibliography. The Provençal 'Life' of the poet precedes the poems themselves, and each poem is preceded by a textual note on the manuscript (where it is available) and is followed by an English translation. Variants are given in footnotes. In an Appendix there are reproductions of manuscripts of the poems set to Peirol's own attractive melodies. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in a poet who has an important place in the golden age of Provençal poetry.
This comprehensive text on foundation design is intended to introduce students of civil engineering, architecture, and environmental disciplines to the fundamentals of designing sound foundations and their implementation. It offers an in-depth coverage of pre- and post-design methodologies that include soil identification, site investigation, interpretation of soil data and design parameters, foundations on different soil types through to settlements, seismic responses, and construction concerns. As an issue of contemporary importance it discusses geotechnical details of developing earthquake resistant designs for different soil types. In addition, the authors provide an extensive account of ground improvement techniques. Supported by the abundance of real-world events/situations and examples that help students master the text concepts, this volume becomes an incisive text and reference guide.
Uniting classical and modern photonics approaches by presenting optical analyses as solutions of Maxwell's equations, this unique book enables students and practising engineers to fully understand the similarities and differences between the different methods. The book begins with a thorough discussion of plane wave analysis, which provides a clear understanding of optics without considering boundary condition or device configuration. It then goes on to cover diffraction analysis of many applications, including a rigorous analysis of TEM waves using Maxwell's equations with boundaries. Laser cavity modes and Gaussian beams are presented, modal analysis is covered, and approximation methods are discussed (including the perturbation technique, coupled mode analysis, and super mode analysis). With theory linked to practical examples throughout, it provides a clear understanding of the interplay between plane wave, diffraction and modal analysis, and how the different techniques can be applied to various areas including imaging, signal processing, and optoelectronic devices.
This book describes in detail the construction and working principle of a variety of commercially available hysteresis machines. The last part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive study of an experimental hysteresis machine. The contents of this part derive entirely from the experimental and analytical work carried out by the author during his doctoral research at the University of Aston in the UK. The exhaustive range of tests and measurements, obtained by the use of uniquely devised transducers and techniques—many of these having been evolved for the first time—showcase numerous aspects of a hysteresis machine. These relate mainly to the measured waveforms of radial and peripheral flux density in the airgap and active part of the rotor as influenced by the hysteretic properties of the rotor material. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Bhutan).
Does Indian civilization have the capacity to change or has it been static? The impression of this civilization as an unchanging one has been revised today. Conflict-tension processes in a complex heterogeneous civilization like that of India are equally important and require in-depth studies along with investigating the continuity of tradition. It is in this context that protest, dissent and reform movements have also played a critical role and facilitated adjustments to changing social realities over the centuries. From time to time alternate systems to the accepted ideological or normative patterns have been suggested. Apparently many of these movements were religious in nature, but the socio-economic context which remains in the background does require further detailed examination. The present volume reflects some aspects of these movements. It is one in the series undertaken as part of the group project A Sourcebook of Indian and Asian Civilizations at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. The essays in this volume by such scholars as Arun Bali, Savitri Chandra, Narendra Mohan, M.G.S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan; Y.M. Pathan, M.S.A. Rao, Sachchidananda, G.B. Sardar and Pushpa Suri will stimulate discussion and generate new perspectives towards understanding Indian civilization.
Uniquely combines both the optical and electrical properties of guided-wave optoelectronic devices, providing key concepts and practical analytical techniques.
The book caters to the 1st semester students of BSc (Hons) Mathematics of Indian universities. It has been written strictly in accordance with the CBCS syllabus of the UGC. By its virtue the book inculcates that mathe-matical maturity which students need in their current and future courses to grow up into mathematicians of substance.
In this comprehensive and detailed analysis of recent research on encouraging reflective practices in TESOL, Farrell demonstrates how this practice has been embraced within TESOL and how it continues to impact the field. Examining a vast array of studies through his own framework for reflecting on practice, Farrell’s analysis comprises not only the intellectual and cognitive but also the spiritual, moral, and emotional aspects of reflection. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter provide a jumping-off point for researchers, scholars, and teachers to further consider and reflect on the future of the field. Providing a holistic picture of reflection, this book is an original compendium of essential research on philosophy and principles, instruments used in studies, and theory and practice.
Jazz Healy is estranged - purposefully - from her mother, who runs a galaxy-spanning criminal organization. Twelve years ago she lost her father when pirates attacked a freighter delivering supplies to a frontier planet. Since then she’s decided it’s better, safer, to keep to herself. Even if that means being alone. And often lonely. Right now, she's delivering pets, of all things, to a lawless space-station. Apparently even the most hardened criminals like animal companionship. One critter especially is making the cargo run worthwhile: a gene-splice kitten. Jazz will earn a cool hundred thousand Commonwealth dollars if she safely delivers the little fluff ball to its new owner. But cargo that valuable brings out all sorts, from wannabe animal activists to tech cultists with enhancement fetishes. And maybe even Jazz's mother. Though the cat is only one bullet point on her agenda.
This book, written for the benefit of engineering students and practicing engineers alike, is the culmination of the author's four decades of experience related to the subject of electrical measurements, comprising nearly 30 years of experimental research and more than 15 years of teaching at several engineering institutions. The unique feature of this book, apart from covering the syllabi of various universities, is the style of presentation of all important aspects and features of electrical measurements, with neatly and clearly drawn figures, diagrams and colour and b/w photos that illustrate details of instruments among other things, making the text easy to follow and comprehend. Enhancing the chapters are interspersed explanatory comments and, where necessary, footnotes to help better understanding of the chapter contents. Also, each chapter begins with a "recall" to link the subject matter with the related science or phenomenon and fundamental background. The first few chapters of the book comprise "Units, Dimensions and Standards"; "Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetism" and "Network Analysis". These topics form the basics of electrical measurements and provide a better understanding of the main topics discussed in later chapters. The last two chapters represent valuable assets of the book, and relate to (a) "Magnetic Measurements", describing many unique features not easily available elsewhere, a good study of which is essential for the design and development of most electric equipment – from motors to transformers and alternators, and (b) "Measurement of Non-electrical Quantities", dealing extensively with the measuring techniques of a number of variables that constitute an important requirement of engineering measurement practices. The book is supplemented by ten appendices covering various aspects dealing with the art and science of electrical measurement and of relevance to some of the topics in main chapters. Other useful features of the book include an elaborate chapter-by-chapter list of symbols, worked examples, exercises and quiz questions at the end of each chapter, and extensive authors' and subject index. This book will be of interest to all students taking courses in electrical measurements as a part of a B.Tech. in electrical engineering. Professionals in the field of electrical engineering will also find the book of use.
