Today, many economically important agricultural, horticultural and ornamental crop plants are attacked by various soil borne and foliar diseases, resulting in billions of dollars in crop losses. Currently, the most widely used disease management strategy is the use of chemical fungicides. However, the use of these fungicides has encountered problems, such as development of resistance by pathogen to fungicides and rapid degradation of the chemicals. Other factors leading to increased interest in alternatives include the increasing cost of soil fumigation, lack of suitable replacements for methyl bromide and public concerns over exposure to fungicides. Both the agriculture and agri-food sector are now expected to move toward environmentally sustainable development, while maintaining productivity. These concerns and expectations have led to renewed interest on the use of “biologically based pest management strategies”. The green revolution of agriculture brought an enormous increase in food production. It not only made the world self sufficient in food but also gave the world’s scientists and farmers an immense amount of self-respect. Though the green revolution did increase food production, the productivity levels have remained low and increase was achieved at a cost of intensive use of water, fertilizer and other inputs which have caused problems of soil salinity, ground water pollution, nutrient imbalances, emergence of new pest and diseases and environmental degradation.

“JAYALALITHAA WEALTH CASE: TRIAL COURT JUDGEMENT” (VOLUME TWO)” : This is a digitised, unabridged, and the original version of Jayalalithaa Wealth Case. Miss. Jayalalithaa, the six-times Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, India, was accused of misusing her office during her first tenure i.e. 1991-96. Thereafter she and three others were charged over amassing properties worth nearly 66 crore INR; 3000 acres worth assets inclusive of farm houses and bungalows, agricultural lands and private firms, vineyards and tea estates in Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad; moveable assets included 800 kg silver, 28 kg gold, 750 pair of shoes, 10,500 saris, 91 watches, and other valuables. The Karnataka Trial Court Judgement ended in their conviction on 27th September 2014; the High Court of Karnataka acquitted all of them from all the charges through its judgement on 11th May 2015; ironically “the Sword of Damocles” fell on Jayalalithaa (after her death on 6/12/2016) and three others through the Judgement of Supreme Court of India on 15th February 2017 in which the order, the conviction, and the sentence of the trial court was restored in full and the judgement of Karnataka High Court was set-aside. While the appeals relate to Miss. Jayalalithaa, she having expired meanwhile, stand abated, the remaining three accused are to meet the cold hands of Justice. This series of Judgements of Trial Court, High Court, and Supreme Court expose the finer aspects of this protracted litigation involving high profile people in the annals of Indian Legal History.

Thar Desert in India is one of the most well-investigated and densely populated regions amongst the world arid zones. A blend of crop and animal husbandries, conservative land use practices, coping mechanisms to minimize adverse effect of drought and a frugal lifestyle have been the characteristic features of its dwellers. Recent increase in biotic pressure has interacted with the fragile environment to create fearsome environmental problems. Governmental responses were prompt in form creating a strong research infrastructure for multi-disciplinary and multi-location research and demonstration on the one hand and in huge investment in irrigation from internally and externally sourced water, desertification control program and an accelerated socio-economic and infrastructure development, softening content of drought and strengthening of livelihoods on the other. Unlike several publications on the Thar, the current effort attempts a comprehensive, pragmatic and off-beat analysis of various developments and goes further to show how the situation today is a blend of both resource degradation and economic development. Recent studies have helped rebuild the past climate history that shows that the climate has been fluctuating during the geological history but reports suggest also that current anthropogenic global warming makes the desert more vulnerable in near future. An attempt has been made also to peep into the future of the Thar.
