From the first (logical) property arises its connection with two-valued logic and model theory; from the second (convergence) property arises its connection with topology and set theory. Both these descriptions of an ultrafilter are connected with compactness. The model-theoretic property finds its expression in the construction of the ultraproduct and the compactness type of theorem of Los (implying the compactness theorem of first-order logic); and the convergence property leads to the process of completion by the adjunction of an ideal element for every ultrafilter-i. e. , to the Stone-Cech com pactification process (implying the Tychonoff theorem on the compact ness of products). Since these are two ways of describing the same mathematical object, it is reasonable to expect that a study of ultrafilters from these points of view will yield results and methods which can be fruitfully crossbred. This unifying aspect is indeed what we have attempted to emphasize in the present work.

The rapid growth of behavior therapy over the past 20 years has been well doc umented. Yet the geometric expansion of the field has been so great that it deserves to be recounted. We all received our graduate training in the mid to late 1960s. Courses in behavior therapy were then a rarity. Behavioral training was based more on informal tutorials than on systematic programs of study. The behavioral literature was so circumscribed that it could be easily mastered in a few months of study. A mere half-dozen books (by Wolpe, Lazarus, Eysenck, Ullmann, and Krasner) more-or-Iess comprised the behavioral library in the mid- 1960s. Semirial works by Ayllon and Azrin, Bandura, Franks, and Kanfer in 1968 and 1969 made it only slightly more difficult to survey the field. Keeping abreast of new developments was not very difficult, as Behaviour Research and Therapy and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis were the only regular outlets for behavioral articles until the end of the decade, when Behavior Therapy and Be havior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry first appeared. We are too young to be maudlin, but "Oh for the good old days!" One of us did a quick survey of his bookshelves and stopped counting books with behavior or behavioral in the titles when he reached 100. There were at least half again as many behavioral books without those words in the title.

These strikes rely largely on surprise, speed, and maneuver to defeat an often numerically superior enemy. Many of these operations carried out by highly trained commando forces have failed. Women with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and other Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) have different etiology, mortality, relapse antecedents, clinical presentation, and course of the disorders than men with AUD/SUD (see Epstein & Menges, 2013; Epstein et al., 2018 ). For instance, relative to men, women report higher comorbidity of mood, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, eating, and personality disorders (Rosenthal, 2013); and women are likely to drink alone, in secrecy, daily, in response to relationship difficulties (Zweig, McCrady, & Epstein, 2009) and in response to negative emotional triggers (Abulseoud et al., 2013). Women tend to have social networks that include family members and romantic partners with SUD (Leonard & Homish, 2008) who do not support recovery (McCrady, 2004). Many relapse antecedents are more prevalent in women than men, including being alone, negative affect, interpersonal problems and relationship distress (Walitzer & Dearing, 2006). Mediators of treatment on AUD outcomes also may differ by gender; mechanisms of change generally relevant to women likely include alleviation of negative affect, enhanced coping skills and self-care, improved interpersonal functioning (Velasquez & Stotts, 2003), and greater emotion regulation (Ashley, Marsden, & Brady, 2003; Timko, Finney, & Moos, 2005). Gender differences in clinical presentation of addiction, relapse antecedents, and mediators suggest that treatments tailored to women's concerns may enhance access to treatment and yield more positive outcomes than gender-neutral programs. Treatment utilization for alcohol use problems is lower for women than for men. Women may be more likely to seek help if single-gender treatment is offered (Cucciare et al., 2013; Lewis et al., 2016), however, female-segregated treatments have been found to be efficacious only if they include female-specific programming (Epstein & Menges, 2013; Holzhauer, Cucciare & Epstein, 2020)"--

When that book went out of print, it became clear - in light of the significant advances in semiring theory over the past years and its new important applications in such areas as idempotent analysis and the theory of discrete-event dynamical systems - that a second edition incorporating minor changes would not be sufficient and that a major revision of the book was in order. Therefore, though the structure of the first «dition was preserved, the text was extensively rewritten and substantially expanded. In particular, references to many interesting and applications of semiring theory, developed in the past few years, had to be added. Unfortunately, I find that it is best not to go into these applications in detail, for that would entail long digressions into various domains of pure and applied mathematics which would only detract from the unity of the volume and increase its length considerably. However, I have tried to provide an extensive collection of examples to arouse the reader's interest in applications, as well as sufficient citations to allow the interested reader to locate them.
