This volume examines British and US attitudes towards the means and mechanisms for the facilitation of an Arab-Israeli reconciliation, focusing specifically on the refugee factor in diplomatic initiatives. It explains why Britain and the US were unable to reconcile the local parties to an agreement on the future of the Palestinian refugees.
A compilation of 45 African-American cemeteries in Jackson and Sandy Ridge Townships in Union Co., NC, with eight surrounding townships, in North and South Carolina.
From the bubonic plague to theoretical pathogens on other worlds, a sweeping look at the past, present, and future of mass infections—and how we battle them. In this panoramic and up-to-date account, we learn how the Black Death, smallpox, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and other great epidemics have not only led to enormous suffering and mass death but have also contributed to the fall of empires and changed the course of history. We also discover how new infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 emerge—and how we wage war against them. Humanity has struck back at the microbes: antibiotics and new vaccines have saved millions of lives. But the battle with these relentless, silent enemies is far from won. We face increasing threats from new and unavoidable pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and even potential extraterrestrial microbes. Duel Without End is a fascinating journey through the long history of infection, from the dawn of life to humanity’s future exploration of deep space.

Wally Pendergast, the Penguin is a picture chapter book of a marvelous little Antarctic penguin on a quest to discover the world around him. Not satisfied with the limitations of his life in the frigid South Pole, he sets forth on an epic journey of discovery in a world where Wally learns there are injustices and problems that even a little penguin can help to solve. Wally makes many friends along the way. Eloise Tortuga, an enormous turtle on the Galapagos Islands just wants to lay her eggs safely. The little penguin witnesses a hunt of penguin's common enemy, a whale named Humperdink Wayland, who is only different and not an enemy. Book 1 travel adventures range from the South Pole, to Galapagos Islands, Panama Canal and ends in Los Angeles, California, USA. The book is loaded with pictures and maps and even Wally's theme song! Encountering mankind and many other species, Wally journeys of exploration lead him to become an advocate of a safer, cleaner world for all. Wally learns that caring for the ecology of our surroundings will be beneficial to both man and animal alike and shares his discoveries with each individual little reader.
The Artists Rifles originated in May 1860 as a corps of rifle volunteers, formed by an art student, Edward Sterling, from members of the artistic professions. Its first HQ was at Burlington House. It provided the largest contingent for the City Imperial Volunteers in the Boer War. When the Territorial Force was created in 1908 it became the 28th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment. Shortly after the outbreak of the Great War second line and third line battalions were formed - numbered 2/28th and 3/28th, the original battalion being 1/28th. The latter arrived in France at the end of October 1914 and became an Officers Training Corps (OTC), first at Bailleul and in April 1915 at St Omer. In November 1915 it absorbed the 2/28th; the 3/28th (which remained in the UK) then became 2/28th. In the summer of 1917 cadet schools in France were closed and potential officers were sent to the UK for training, and 1/28th Battalion, freed at last from its OTC role, was sent to the front at the end of June 1917, allocated to 190th Brigade, 63rd (RN) Division where it remained to the end of the war. A short (17 pages) but very informative history of the battalion's service in the line is included in the preface. This remarkable book contains a complete record of all whose names have been inscribed in the regiment's Muster Roll since August 1914, showing commissions obtained, when and in which corps/regiments; honours and decorations awarded with citations where published; and a list of all casualties. There is a total of 15,022 names, that is everyone who at one time or another served in the Regiment in any capacity. 10,256 received commissions, eight VCs were awarded, and the casualties suffered throughout the war numbered 6,071 of whom 2,003 were killed. There are summary tables of awards and of casualties.
