A mind-expanding dive into a lost chapter of 1968, featuring the famous and forgotten: Van Morrison, folkie-turned-cult-leader Mel Lyman, Timothy Leary, James Brown, and many more Van Morrison's Astral Weeks is an iconic rock album shrouded in legend, a masterpiece that has touched generations of listeners and influenced everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Martin Scorsese. In his first book, acclaimed musician and journalist Ryan H. Walsh unearths the album's fascinating backstory--along with the untold secrets of the time and place that birthed it: Boston 1968. On the 50th anniversary of that tumultuous year, Walsh's book follows a criss-crossing cast of musicians and visionaries, artists and hippie entrepreneurs, from a young Tufts English professor who walks into a job as a host for TV's wildest show (one episode required two sets, each tuned to a different channel) to the mystically inclined owner of radio station WBCN, who believed he was the reincarnation of a scientist from Atlantis. Most penetratingly powerful of all is Mel Lyman, the folk-music star who decided he was God, then controlled the lives of his many followers via acid, astrology, and an underground newspaper called Avatar. A mesmerizing group of boldface names pops to life in Astral Weeks: James Brown quells tensions the night after Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated; the real-life crimes of the Boston Strangler come to the movie screen via Tony Curtis; Howard Zinn testifies for Avatar in the courtroom. From life-changing concerts and chilling crimes, to acid experiments and film shoots, Astral Weeks is the secret, wild history of a unique time and place. Every year, the cost of a four-year degree goes up, and the value goes down. But for many students, there's a better answer. So many things are getting faster and cheaper. Movies stream into your living room, without ticket or concession-stand costs. The world's libraries are at your fingertips instantly, and for free. So why is a college education the only thing that seems immune to change? Colleges and universities operate much as they did 40 years ago, with one major exception: tuition expenses have risen dramatically. What's more, earning a degree takes longer than ever before, with the average time to graduate now over five years. As a result, graduates often struggle with enormous debt burdens. Even worse, they often find that degrees did not prepare them to obtain and succeed at good jobs in growing sectors of the economy. While many learners today would thrive with an efficient and affordable postsecondary education, the slow and pricey road to a bachelor's degree is starkly the opposite. In A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College, Ryan Craig documents the early days of a revolution that will transform—or make obsolete—many colleges and universities. Alternative routes to great first jobs that do not involve a bachelor's degree are sprouting up all over the place. Bootcamps, income-share programs, apprenticeships, and staffing models are attractive alternatives to great jobs in numerous growing sectors of the economy: coding, healthcare, sales, digital marketing, finance and accounting, insurance, and data analytics. A New U is the first roadmap to these groundbreaking programs, which will lead to more student choice, better matches with employers, higher return on investment of cost and time, and stronger economic growth.
Ensure your clinical trial supply chain is running smoothly with this practical guide Clinical trials are a critical part of the pharmaceutical development process. Supply Chain Planning for Clinical Trials offers a practical introduction to this process for researchers and industry professionals. Beginning with the basics of clinical trial supply chain management, it proceeds step by step through all aspects of demand and supply planning for clinical trials. The result is a thorough overview that also offers practical examples of how to plan supply for clinical trials. Supply Chain Planning for Clinical Trials readers will also find: Tools for minimizing risk and expense by optimizing the relationship between supply and demand Detailed discussion of topics including quality and regulatory considerations and the business processes that support clinical trial supply chain management Spreadsheet-based models to illustrate key concepts, adaptable to the readers’ specific scenarios Supply Chain Planning for Clinical Trails is ideal for pharmaceutical industry professionals involved in clinical trial supply planning, as well as academics and researchers interested in the pharmaceutical industry and its logistics.

Banned From Baby Showers (aka Donna Ryan) began blogging about birth, breastfeeding, and parenting in 2008. Her posts remain relevant for parents of all ages and stages of this crazy journey and now come to life in the form of a book! Donna has big opinions on natural birth and attachment parenting. You noticed her caricature on the cover, right? Big hair, big hat, and a big mouth! She's been asked if she has a Texas-size opinion on all topics or just childbirth. Is she allowed at weddings? Birthday parties? Banned from Baby Shower moments refer to those experiences with your friends, family, or coworkers over childbirth and related topics. These are the moments where you have to make a decision about whether to give information or just walk away from the conversation to avoid a fight. To answer the question, while she didn't attend baby showers for years, she will occasionally make an appearance these days--but she keeps her mouth shut and smiles while handing over this gift wrapped book! While Donna is happy to share her opinions, they are rooted in evidence. She has taught hundreds of couples in live childbirth classes and thousands through online classes at Birth Boot Camp, a company she founded in 2012. There is value in the anecdotal stories, too, when it comes to childbirth. You'll find plenty within these pages. Have fun with this book. Read it cover to cover or pick through the topics and categories that interest you or you need at a particular phase of your pregnancy or parenting journey. You might just find it changes your life!

University campuses and their academic libraries are increasingly interconnected. A major sign of this is the transformation of interlibrary loan into resource sharing. The emergence of resource sharing has brought with it new challenges for the university library. These challenges can be overcome, and the university library can emerge a stronger institution, more connected with the patrons and community it serves. To accomplish this transformation, libraries need to learn from the past in order to take a leading role in developing future technology to meet the needs of their patrons. Resources Anytime, Anywhere explores the transformation of interlibrary loan into resource sharing by looking at the ideas that have motivated the library-developed technologies that have changed the way resource sharing is conducted. Resources Anytime, Anywhere illustrates how academic libraries can take an active role in developing technology to meet the needs of their patrons. Through designing our own products and sharing them with other libraries, we can join the lessons of the past with the technology of today to create a more interconnected library that can meet the future needs of library patrons. - Describes the theoretical underpinnings of interlibrary loan - Explores how interlibrary loan has evolved to resource sharing - Presents new ways of organizing and developing resource sharing staff - Examines the technological developments within resources sharing - Reconsiders the idea of collaboration and cooperation among libraries - Considers new innovative technologies that can transform how resource sharing is conducted - Provides recommendation and future directions of how libraries can apply these methods at their institution
In Group Filial Therapy (GFT), therapists train parents to conduct play sessions with their own children to help meet children's therapeutic needs, and to transfer appropriate skills to family life. Based on parents' application of Child-Centred Play Therapy, taught and supervised by filial therapists, this evidence-based method is highly effective for working with families from diverse backgrounds and locations. This book provides an accessible guide to the theory and practice of GFT, and for the first time offers step-by-step guidelines for implementing the GFT program developed by Dr Guerney, the co-creator of Filial Therapy. Important practical considerations are addressed by Dr Guerney and Dr Ryan, such as how to determine the composition of groups and the duration of programs, and how to conduct Filial Therapy intakes. The facilitative attitudes and skills needed to be an effective Filial Therapy group leader are also described, and comprehensive instructions for implementing Dr Guerney's 20-week model of GFT are provided. The book closes with examples of how the program may be adapted to meet the needs of special groups. Replete with examples and dialogues bringing to life the group process, this definitive guide will enable therapists already familiar with the method, as well as those wishing to learn it, to maximise the fulfilment of therapeutic goals for participating families. Practitioners in mental health, social services and counselling, as well as parenting experts, play and filial therapists and therapists in training will find that this book expands and enriches the services they can offer their clients.
It is one thing to study history and its quite another to have lived it. John J. (Pat) Ryan, a retired USAF lieutenant colonel has done just that. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1920, he grew up during the Great Depression. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Pat applied for and was accepted into the U.S. Army Aviation Cadet program. To fly had been his lifelong dream and WWII gave him his chance to make it come true. He was one of the blessed ones that survived combat in WWII, the Korean War, the Viet Nam War, and the Berlin Airlift. His story starts at a time when aircraft and autos were scarce, family radios and television were non-existent, movies were silent and in black and white. During the Great Depression many families had to learn to do more with less to survive. For some people, WWII created jobs in both civilian and military areas. The fortunate ones were those who survived and didnt lose too many family members and friends. Pat was one of the lucky ones. It was in Japan on loan to the CIA where he met his wife-to-be, Mae, during the Korean War. She had been in the OSS in Italy in WWII and at the post-war Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. They had started to write a book of their lives but Mae was stricken with terminal cancer and passed away only five days after she gave final approval to her publisher. The book is entitled A Woman Ahead of Her Time. The Last Mission completes the dream Ryan shared with his wife, and it brings home the lessons of war and humanity, of responsibility and faith, of family and love. Come fly as his co-pilot through a life of adventures, struggles, victories and defeats as he tries to live his life as truly, honestly and fully as any man can.
Data Analysis: A Model Comparison Approach to Regression, ANOVA, and Beyond is an integrated treatment of data analysis for the social and behavioral sciences. It covers all of the statistical models normally used in such analyses, such as multiple regression and analysis of variance, but it does so in an integrated manner that relies on the comparison of models of data estimated under the rubric of the general linear model. Data Analysis also describes how the model comparison approach and uniform framework can be applied to models that include product predictors (i.e., interactions and nonlinear effects) and to observations that are nonindependent. Indeed, the analysis of nonindependent observations is treated in some detail, including models of nonindependent data with continuously varying predictors as well as standard repeated measures analysis of variance. This approach also provides an integrated introduction to multilevel or hierarchical linear models and logistic regression. Finally, Data Analysis provides guidance for the treatment of outliers and other problematic aspects of data analysis. It is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in data analysis and offers an integrated approach that is very accessible and easy to teach. Highlights of the third edition include: a new chapter on logistic regression; expanded treatment of mixed models for data with multiple random factors; updated examples; an enhanced website with PowerPoint presentations and other tools that demonstrate the concepts in the book; exercises for each chapter that highlight research findings from the literature; data sets, R code, and SAS output for all analyses; additional examples and problem sets; and test questions.

Which of the following will yield the fastest measurable change in performance and/or body composition? (A) changes in training. (B) changes in diet. (C) use of sports supplements. (D) they all work equally well. If you answered 'C,' go to the head of the class. That's right; the proper use of sports supplements can produce changes in minutes (e.g. caffeine), days (e.g. creatine) and weeks (e.g. beta-alanine). Yet we are bombarded by muddled thinking from the mainstream media telling us that 'creatine causes cramps,' 'high protein diets are bad for your kidneys,' 'supplements aren't needed as long as you eat a balanced diet' and other ideas that are void of data. Sports Nutrition & Performance Enhancing Supplements (eds. Abbie Smith-Ryan PhD CSCS*D CISSN and Jose Antonio PhD FNSCA FISSN. A compelling alternative view of the relationship between our politics and our economy. Throughout America, structural problems are getting worse. Economic inequality is near Gilded Age heights, the healthcare system is a mess, and the climate crisis continues to grow. Yet most ambitious policy proposals that might fix these calamities are dismissed as wastefully expensive by default. From the kitchen table to Congress, debates are punctuated with a familiar refrain: “How are you going to pay for that?” This question is designed to shut down policy pushes up front, minimizing any interference with the free market. It comes from neoliberalism, an economic ideology that has overtaken both parties. Proponents insist that markets are naturally-occurring and apolitical—and that too much manipulation of the economy will make our society fall apart. Ryan Cooper argues that our society already is falling apart, and the logically preposterous views of neoliberalism are to blame. Most progressives understand this instinctively, but many lack the background knowledge to make effective economic counterarguments. How Are You Going To Pay For That? is filled with engaging discussions and detailed strategies that policymakers and citizens alike can use to assail even the most entrenched lines of neoliberal logic, and start to undo these long-held misconceptions. Equal parts economic theory, history, and political polemic, this is an essential roadmap for winning the key battles to come.
The story of how America’s public lands—our city parks, national forests, and wilderness areas—came into being can be traced to a few conservation pioneers and proteges who shaped policy and advocated for open spaces. Some, like Frederick Law Olmsted and Gifford Pinchot, are well known, while others have never been given their due. Jeffrey Ryan covers the nearly century-long period between 1865 (when Olmsted contributed to the creation of Yosemite as a park and created its management plan) to the signing of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Olmsted influenced Pinchot, who became the first head of the National Forest Service, and in turn, Pinchot hired the foresters who became the founders of The Wilderness Society and creators of the Wilderness Act itself. This history emphasizes the cast of characters—among them Theodore Roosevelt, Bob Marshall, Benton MacKaye, Aldo Leopold, and Howard Zahniser—and provides context for their decisions and the political and economic factors that contributed to the triumphs and pitfalls in the quest to protect public lands. In researching the book, Ryan traveled to the places where these crusaders lived, worked, and were inspired to take up the cause to make public lands accessible to all.

Redmond on Dismissal Law, 3rd edition (previous edition titled: Dismissal Law in Ireland) explains the workings of dismissal law (wrongful and unfair) and details the introduction of the new Workplace Relations Commission. The Irish Government's Workplace Relations Reform Programme delivered a two-tier Workplace Relations structure by merging the activities of the National Employment Rights Authority, the Labour Relations Commission, the Equality Tribunal and the first instance functions of the Labour Court and the Employment Appeals Tribunal into a new Body of First Instance, the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). The WRC provides a single portal of entry for all employment and equality related information requests, and employment and equality rights complaints and referrals. It also plays a key role in encouraging employers and employees to resolve issues at workplace level thereby reducing the number of cases going forward for inspection or adjudication. The book is useful to both practitioners and students in detailing how the law works and how the new system works. The book covers all relevant legislation, including the many amendments to the Unfair Dismissals Act 1977, and it provides expert guidance for employers and employees on their respective rights and legal obligations regarding termination of employment under the common law as well as unfair dismissals legislation. Includes coverage of the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2012, the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2015 and Workplace Relations Act 2015.

Framing each chapter as a one-week action assignment, the authors have broken down the process into manageable chunks to enable students writers to achieve an immediate sense of completion at every step. By using this scaffolding approach the the authors encourage the student researcher to focus on one part of the process rather than the total, sometimes overwhelming, final product. With the exception of the Review of the Literature section which takes several weeks to complete, all other thesis sections can and should be timed out for seven days. The Authors primary objective was to empower the student researcher to accomplish each of the steps in the process while never loosing site on the product that will help the children in their classrooms. Whether developing an Abstract or writing in-text citations, student researchers are guided throughout he nuances of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Associations, 6th Edition.

Tiny House, Large Lifestyle! Tiny homes are popping up across America, captivating people with their novel approach not only to housing, but to life. Once considered little more than a charming oddity, the tiny house movement continues to gain momentum among those who thirst for a simpler, "greener," more meaningful life in the face of society's "more is better" mindset. This book explores the philosophies behind the tiny house lifestyle, helps you determine whether it's a good fit for you, and guides you through the transition to a smaller space. For inspiration, you'll meet tiny house pioneers and hear how they built their dwellings (and their lives) in unconventional, creative and purposeful ways. They'll invite you in, show you around their cozy abodes, and share lessons they learned along the way. Inside you'll find everything you need to design a tiny home of your own: • Worksheets and exercises to help you home in on your true needs, define personal goals, and develop a tiny house layout that's just right for you. • Practical strategies for cutting through clutter and paring down your possessions. • Guidance through the world of building codes and zoning laws. • Design tricks for making the most of every square foot, including multi-function features and ways to maximize vertical space. • Tours of 11 tiny houses and the unique story behind each. Tiny House Living is about distilling life down to that which you value most...freeing yourself from clutter, mortgages and home maintenance...and, in doing so, making more room in everyday life for the really important things, like relationships, passions and community. Whether you downsize to a 400-square-foot home or simply scale back the amount of stuff you have in your current home, this book shows you how to live well with less.
