How the suppression of the slave trade and the “disposal” of liberated Africans shaped the emergence of modern humanitarianism Between 1808 and 1867, the British navy’s Atlantic squadrons seized nearly two thousand slave ships, “re‑capturing” almost two hundred thousand enslaved people and resettling them as liberated Africans across sites from Sierra Leone and Cape Colony to the West Indies, Brazil, Cuba, and beyond. While Raleigh Park is fictional, there are aspects of it, as in any novel, that will, I am sure, be familiar to many people, as it reflects, to some degree, things that have happened in our lives or the lives of family and friends. Writing the novel was very emotional for me in that after putting in four or five hours or more at times writing the book, I found the story coming alive and mentally lingering in the lives and events of my characters. It was almost as if I had transported myself into the world within the book. On many occasions, I woke up and felt I was, as an example, actually in Portland. This experience was something I never expected from writing a book. I now wonder if other authors have the same experience from their endeavors. I hope that you will enjoy reading my effort, and maybe you will, as I was, become emotionally involved in my story and feel it come alive.

It investigates the current state of scholarship and the key points of its development, indicating areas for enquiry and point out some less familiar sources along the way. The intention is not to deal with the canon of historical works on the Anglo-Saxon army, for remarkably there is no 'canon' as such. Much, though by no means all, scholarship on the organization of military systems in the Anglo-Saxon state has been undertaken by historians and scholars from related disciplines for whom warfare is not a primary concern. Many of the sources used will be familiar to students of early medieval England, but others are included because they are less often considered ... I have not attempted to use a chronological structure, nor have I retold any particular narrative history of the English Kingdom during the Viking Age, although for the reader's convenience a chronology of events is included as an appendix.
