Approving or denying building permits and other land-use applications is an important role of local governments but one that often draws criticism from developers and citizens alike. This volume identifies an array of proven practices for bringing greater fairness, thoroughness, and speed to the development review process. The authors and a team of planning and development review professionals benchmarked with three national leaders and discovered seventy-eight distinctive practices accounting for the leaders' success. In doing so, the benchmarking team not only produced helpful advice for improving development review processes but also demonstrated the value to local governments of a type of benchmarking fairly common in the private sector but rarely used in the public sector.
My memoirs are rather slanted. They include only the successes and none of the failures. Clinical vignettes that illustrate the healing process follow my career from a medical internship at Georgetown, through a fellowship in Psychiatry at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. The discovery of the warming point in schizophrenia at D.C. General was followed by the almost miraculous healing of several thousand acutely ill schizophrenics during two years as Chief Psychiatrist. There is a detailed case history of the full recovery of a chronic schizophrenic considered untreatable. Patients with drug-resistant suicidal depression were successfully treated through a unique form of psychosurgery. "Couldn't put it down, a page turner. The book is well written, interesting, and above all full of love. Publication is imperative so that what you did at D.C. General to help unravel the mystery of schizophrenia will not be forgotten, and also that new generations of psychiatrists will be inspired to follow where you have led." -Francis F. Barnes, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and former Chief Psychiatrist at Sibley Memorial Hospital. "Absolutely fascinated by your book. Did not put it down until I had read the entire book and highlighted so much of it. So thoughtful and so beautiful that it needs to be shared with as many people as possible." -Richard Miller, ESQ., Trial lawyer in Kansas City, MO. "Fascinated with your book. It's spell binding." -Mrs. Patricia Normile, Professor of Economics at Montgomery College in Maryland. "Very well written, flow easily and interestingly and is informative, uplifting and encouraging. A humane work." -Mr. Thomas Cormack, West Point grad and Federal Career Officer. "The book is compellingly written, with a fine blend of the personal and professional, and a healing message available to us all. It radiates the inner warmth it reports." -Phyllis Trible, Baldwin Professor of Sacred Literature, Union Theological Seminary, New York.

The Great American Turquoise Rush was the period of the largest concerted effort to mine, process and market turquoise in the history of the United States. It started when traditional markets for the clear sky blue Persian turquoise closed and the east coast jewelers, who controlled the jewelry trade in the United States, were forced from necessity to reappraise the quality of turquoise from the southwest. The efforts to control this new market were begun in New Mexico but would expand into other states. This is the true story of that time, largely forgotten or remembered only from oral tradition.
Axiom Business Book Awards 2020 Gold Medalist in Philanthropy / Nonprofit / Sustainability The Time to Impact the Future Is Now Impact Imperative author Pamela Ryan explores the likely realities facing our planet and humanity for the next few decades. We are, as she tells us, at a pivotal moment in history. Individuals, organizations, and investors are doing immense good, but extraordinary challenges are enveloping the planet, threatening life and humanity itself: escalating extreme weather events, shifting global population and power balances, widening socioeconomic disparities, and rising tensions among extremists and mainstream populations. Impact Imperative stems from consultations with over 130 professionals in the burgeoning impact innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment space. As Dr. Ryan shares insights from these impact innovators about how we can meet these challenges in the next few decades and beyond, she encourages readers to think about how our own consequential actions in the present can propel us—individually and collectively—toward more optimal futures. Or increasingly destructive futures.
Alternating between personal anecdote, hilarious insight, and smart analysis, Luke Skywalker Can't Read contends that Barbarella is good for you, that monster movies are just romantic comedies with commitment issues, that Dracula and Sherlock Holmes are total hipsters, and, most shocking, shows how virtually everyone in the Star Wars universe is functionally illiterate. Romp through time and space, from the circus sideshows of one hundred years ago to the Comic Cons of today, from the darkest corners of the galaxy to the comfort of your couch. For anyone who pretended their flashlight was a lightsaber, stood in line for a movie at midnight, or dreamed they were abducted by aliens, Luke Skywalker Can't Read is full of answers to questions you haven't thought to ask"--
