Analyzes audio recordings of interwar Hebrew plays, providing a new model for the use of sound in theater studies. Possessed Voices tells the intriguing story of a largely unknown collection of audio recordings, a valuable tool for understanding historical theater, which preserve performances of modernist interwar Hebrew plays. Seldom used in scholarship, Ruthie Abeliovich focuses on four recordings: a 1931 recording of The Eternal Jew (1919), a 1965 recording of The Dybbuk (1922), a 1961 radio play of The Golem (1925), and a 1952 radio play of Yaakov and Rachel (1928). Abeliovich traces the spoken language of modernist Hebrew theater as grounded in multiple modalities of expressive practices, including spoken Hebrew, Jewish liturgical sensibilities supplemented by Yiddish intonation and other vernacular accents, and in relation to prevalent theatrical forms. The book shows how these performances provided Jewish immigrants from Europe with a venue for lamenting the decline of their home communities and for connecting their memories to the present. Analyzing sonic material against the backdrop of its artistic, cultural, and ideological contexts, Abeliovich develops a critical framework for the study of sound as a discipline in its own right in theater scholarship. “The author’s focus on historicizing and analyzing sound recordings and radio plays as a means to tackle the pervasive ephemerality problem in theater studies is a novel and valuable approach that represents a significant intervention in the field. These types of sources have had scant attention in theater studies to date, but Abeliovich makes a compelling argument that they belong at the center.” — Debra Caplan, author of Yiddish Empire: The Vilna Troupe, Jewish Theater, and the Art of Itinerancy

This book introduces readers to redemptive service, benevolence, and the pursuit of justice. Bringing together expertise in Christian theology and sociology, Lisa Stephenson and Ruthie Wienk write from the conviction that service to others--especially those who are disenfranchised and impoverished--is central to our identity and mission as Christians. Redemptive Service articulates the biblical, theological, and sociological foundations of service and explains why it is an important part of true Christian identity. The authors use the parable of the good Samaritan to frame redemptive service as a twofold process. First, true Christian service must emerge from a genuine love of our neighbor, which can only come about when service emerges from a Christian worldview. Second, our vision must be accompanied by intentional and informed action. We must discern and respond to the cries for help that surround us through relief, development, and advocacy work. The authors highlight why we should engage in service while providing readers with a framework to use when deciding whom to serve and how to serve well.

She helps her readers understand the signs of anguish and to identify with great heroes of the Bible who also struggled with anguish. Upon delving deep into the effects of anguish, Ruthie then guides her readers in understanding Biblical principles to overcome their own feelings of emotional distress. Medical treatments aside, there are spiritual weapons that are available to those who struggle with anguish. Ruthie uncovers those and makes these tools readily available to all who struggle.
The inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States of America in 2009 marked a crucial turning point in African American history. It was the culmination of a chain of events that started nearly four hundred years ago when the evil of slavery cast its shadow on America. Tracing the history of black Americans, A Chain of Events documents how God gave them the freedom and will to rise from the ashes of slavery to become true Americans. Author Ruthie Green examines the harrowing life of slaves in early America, their emancipation by Abraham Lincoln, and their long struggle through the years for recognition as citizens of the United States. Green also discusses some of the African American community's most prominent and influential early members, including W. E. B. Du Bois, George Washington Carver, and Marcus Garvey Jr. She profiles leading African American entertainers and delves into the tumultuous years of the civil rights movement and the impact of Martin Luther King Jr. In addition, she talks about such important African Americans as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Jesse Owens, the Tuskegee Airmen, Ethel Waters, and many more. A Chain of Events offers an eye-opening glimpse into the remarkable history of African Americans.
I'm so different now, so different from the naive high school senior full of heart and dreams. Like a firefly whose very being lights up a summer night like a Fourth of July sparkler, my soul's light was at its brightest. Tammy and Charla have been friends since childhood, but lost touch when life took them separate directions. In their time apart, both women have found themselves in situations far beyond their control. Tammy Trovich had been full of dreams, but had sacrificed and forgotten them all. Truth collides with her head-on when she realizes she's been caught like a firefly in a proverbial jar, living a life of have-to and supposed-to, when all the while, freedom was only inches away. Despite many obstacles, Charla Calibrisi thinks she's living her dream as a news anchor, but when her husband's aggressive behavior mirrors her dark past, will she allow the truth she has buried to be excavated, or will she be buried with it? Trapped in a jar with their lights dimming, both women wrestle with their devotion to the sanctity of marriage. To what limit will Tammy and Charla let their lives grow fainter before their light is extinguished-unable to emanate even the faintest glow? Fireflies is Ruthie Lewis's debut novel, a glimpse into the twisted lives of marriage, what it means to be a woman, the lies they believe, and the choices they make.
This project began as a dissertation for a Doctorate Degree but as the work progressed it was presented to the California State Department of Education to be examined as a text in the Middle schools system. After the third meeting of the Board the votes were against the book due to the reference of the Bible. The work, as I quote There are too many religious quotes, remarks, and or reference. With that in mind the project was placed in storage until a publisher could be obtained. The work was accepted as fulfillment of studies required for the writers Doctorate Degree. At last looking forward to publishing of this work, the reader might consider the advance steps this nation as a people have made. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the Lord of the enemies. Psalm 107:2 Many questions have been asked concerning the redeemed or redemption, such as, What is the meaning of the word redeemed, who are the redeemed, or is there a process one must go through in order to obtain redemption? Ministers, soul winners, and missionaries alike are approached with these questions at some time or another. Most people asking these questions truly are seeking honest answers. Not often one will ask questions on redemption for sarcastic reasons. For some unknown reason, these questions create problems and misunderstanding for some and causes confusion for others. It is the author's determination to solve some of the problems and clear the minds of some who may be confused. The questions and problems in this presentation are of great significance because they present the arguments for this study. One most important factor as we enter this field of study is that we must use the absolute, correct approach in answering any questions, but especially questions where religion and Christianity are concerned. The second most important factor is that one must have some background and knowledge on the subject matter before attempting to answer any question and most importantly any question that is biblical. Third, one must be able to rightly divide the matter, the material, the evidence, and the proof of the issue that is being discussed or argued. To fulfill the prescribed course work, I am presenting this thesis of not less than forty thousand words in length. This entire work will culminate, if approved, in a degree of master of theology (ThM) with a deep interest in the field of Christian education as an instructor. It is also my sincere desire to continue my work in this field and to immediately start working on a doctorate degree in theology, again my main focus being Christian education. I have no doubt that teaching is my calling for the work in the Master's vineyard. Ruthie Johnson
Devils Salt by Ruthie Marlene, adapted from the play by Jovanka Bach In a forested glade in New England in the early seventeenth century, Governor Hooker Wainwright Mulwray spies on Hannah Mulwray and her husband making love. Marulla, an old crone, comes upon Hooker unexpectedly, and he threatens to kill her if she should ever relate to others what she has seen. In the chamber of the tribunal house, Wainwright launches into a vicious attack against Hannahs character, proclaiming her to be a witch to Henry Skiers and Samuel Webcott, two of the colony elders. At the same time, in the bedroom of John and Elizabeth Mears, Hannah helps deliver Elizabeths first child, stillborn and deformed. Looking upon it, the grieving parents proclaim it to be a devils child and that God has abandoned them. Hannah assures them that it is not and takes the infant to the Reverend Learned Shepherd for a full Christian burial. Meanwhile in the Wainwright parlor, Margaret watches as her husband, Hooker, peers out the window, spying on those gathered at the Mulwray house across the way. He writes their names down in his notebook. Finally, he spots Hannah as she hurries home carrying something in her arms. In the Mulwray home, Hannah explains to all that Elizabeth Mears baby was stillborn. Suddenly, Margaret Wainwright enters and warns them that her husband has taken down all their names; but to what purpose, she does not know. Reverend Learned Shepherd wants no part of her plan, believing that it would be a sacrilege. But Hannah calls upon the feelings that she and Shepherd had for each other long before she was married. Shepherd weakens and agrees to bury the child. In the church, Shepherd is conducting the funeral service in front of a small casket as John and Elizabeth Mears look on. Suddenly, Wainwright storms into the church, screaming sacrilege and demands that they open the casket. The casket is opened to reveal nothing more than a white silk cloth. Wainwright rants on about Hannah being a witch, beguiling everyone with her wanton carnality. Hannah is brought to trial and ultimately hung, and then sometime later, Wainwright is walking in the same forest where he first spied Hannah and her husband making love. He thinks he sees Hannah. Wainwright hurries forward and grabs her, but its only Marulla, who offers him a bit of henbane to calm his lovesick heart. To her surprise, he grabs a handful and shoves it into his mouth. After swallowing it, he kneels over, dead.

“Moving, heartfelt, and truly inspiring. A great book to read right now.” —Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things “Ruthie is a gifted storyteller with the unique ability to make you feel her emotions as if they're your own. Her book is somehow both bold and tender and utterly, truthfully, authentically her. She doesn't hide from heartbreak or fail to experience the fullness of all the beauty life can hold.” —Rachel Hollis, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing Brain on Fire meets Carry On, Warrior, There I Am is an arresting inspirational memoir about one woman’s journey from chronic pain and hopelessness to finding joy, redemption, and healing. At seventeen years old, Ruthie Lindsey is hit by an ambulance near her home in rural Louisiana. She’s given a five percent chance of survival and one percent chance of walking again. One month later after a spinal fusion surgery, Ruthie defies the odds, leaving the hospital on her own two feet. Just a few years later, newly married and living in Nashville, Ruthie begins to experience debilitating pain. Her case confounds doctors and after numerous rounds of testing, imaging, and treatment, they prescribe narcotic painkillers—lots of them. Ruthie has become bedridden, dependent on painkillers, and hopeless, when an X-ray reveals that the wire used to fuse her spine is piercing her brain stem. Without another staggeringly expensive experimental surgery, she could well become paralyzed, but in many ways, she already is. Ruthie goes into the hospital in chronic pain, dependent on prescription painkillers, and leaves that way. She can still walk, but has no idea where she’s going. As her life unravels, Ruthie returns home to Louisiana and sets out on a journey to learn joy again. She trades fentanyl for sunsets and morphine for wildflowers, weaning herself off of the drugs and beginning the process of healing—of coming home to her body. Raw and redemptive, There I Am is not just about the magic of optimism, but the work of it. Ruthie’s extraordinary memoir urges us to unlearn the stories of brokenness that we tell ourselves and embrace the wholeness, joy, and healing that lives inside all of us.
Today I begin to share my testimony, my truth, my story of how a season of my life I had to first love and live with a narcissist. Second, I had to know and understand the narcissist. Third, and more importantly, I had to learn to survive the narcissist. There were so many warning signs, and the longer I ignored what my gut, eyes, and ears were telling me, the more I began to talk myself into why I should stay in the relationship and why he needed me.
