This book appears on the 100-year celebration of the kibbutz movement, a century since the establishment of the first kibbutz, Deganya (Alef) in 1910. The kibbutz started as a farming community, and over the years has defined and developed its unique ideology of social and economic aspects of self-rule, equality, mutual responsibility, and common ownership of the means of production. The kibbutz, that some define as an utopian community, has gradually developed into a community with diverse means of production, including leading international industries. The book describes the development of the unique system of zoning, with landscape and gardens that strongly reflect the ideology. This uniqueness was developed while rooted in the Western international tradition of landscape architecture, with planners and designers educated mainly in central Europe. The book describes the different periods and styles in the development of the kibbutz landscape, as well as some of the main landscape issues and elements such as the dominant tree species and the circle. It also describes in detail some of the key people involved in the development of the kibbutz landscape and gardens - landscape gardeners, landscape architects, and kibbutz gardeners. The dramatic political and economic changes that occurred in Israel have not bypassed the kibbutz, for they caused changes in kibbutz ideology and the community's social and economic structures. These changes and the changes that they have caused and are still causing in the kibbutz landscape are carefully detailed in the last chapter. The dramatic changes in the kibbutz landscape have also led to a discussion of of the need for landscape conservation as well, and some examples are described.

Aquella memorable iniciativa de Eugenio Espejo de publicar el 5 de enero de 1792, en las postrimerías del régimen colonial, Primicias de la cultura de Quito, el inicio del periodismo en el Ecuador, fue replicada treinta y seis años después en Cuenca, cuando fray Vicente Solano puso a circular El Eco del Asuay (sic), el primer periódico que salió a la luz en nuestra, aún balbuciente, vida republicana. Era el domingo 13 de enero de 1828, días en los que bullían las ambiciones y tambaleaba la Gran Colombia. Se trataba de un impreso en folio de cuatro páginas a dos columnas de edición clara y limpia y en cuya primera página ostentaba un epígrafe tomado de una frase de Rousseau que decía: Ce n´est pas assez de dire aux citoyens: soyez bons; il faut leur apprendre à l´être. (No basta decir a los ciudadanos: sed buenos; es necesario enseñarles a serlo). Why has shame recently displaced guilt as a dominant emotional reference in the West? After the Holocaust, survivors often reported feeling guilty for living when so many others had died, and in the 1960s psychoanalysts and psychiatrists in the United States helped make survivor guilt a defining feature of the "survivor syndrome." Yet the idea of survivor guilt has always caused trouble, largely because it appears to imply that, by unconsciously identifying with the perpetrator, victims psychically collude with power. In From Guilt to Shame, Ruth Leys has written the first genealogical-critical study of the vicissitudes of the concept of survivor guilt and the momentous but largely unrecognized significance of guilt's replacement by shame. Ultimately, Leys challenges the theoretical and empirical validity of the shame theory proposed by figures such as Silvan Tomkins, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Giorgio Agamben, demonstrating that while the notion of survivor guilt has depended on an intentionalist framework, shame theorists share a problematic commitment to interpreting the emotions, including shame, in antiintentionalist and materialist terms.

This study of contemporary German poetry represents the first attempt to examine comprehensively and at some length the lyric response to the unification period. It sets out to investigate, by means of close textual analysis, whether the German ‘Wende’ was also a turning-point for poetry, exploring how GDR poets responded both to the revolutionary events of 1989 and subsequently to the new, united Germany. An introductory chapter considers what is distinct about poetry as a genre, especially under censorship or amid historic change, as well as outlining the post-unification ‘Literaturstreit’. The following chapter offers a survey of the poet’s role in the GDR from 1949 until 1989. Two central chapters then gather the poetry of the ‘Wende’ and unification as a corpus of work and characterize it, through the elucidation of recurring themes, motifs and techniques. The volume strikes a balance between giving a general overview of poetry written in 1989-1996 and focusing on individual poets whose work is particularly compelling. After identifying broad trends across a wide range of individual poems, collections and anthologies, single chapters therefore examine in greater depth the work of Volker Braun and Durs Grünbein. The concluding chapter addresses the issue of a separate GDR literature. Finally, an extensive, structured bibliography is provided, covering the poetry, literary criticism and cultural history of the period.
