This is a substantial expansion of the first edition. The last chapter on stochastic differential equations is entirely new, as is the longish section §9.4 on the Cameron-Martin-Girsanov formula. Illustrative examples in Chapter 10 include the warhorses attached to the names of L. S. Ornstein, Uhlenbeck and Bessel, but also a novelty named after Black and Scholes. The Feynman-Kac-Schrooinger development (§6.4) and the material on re flected Brownian motions (§8.5) have been updated. Needless to say, there are scattered over the text minor improvements and corrections to the first edition. A Russian translation of the latter, without changes, appeared in 1987. Stochastic integration has grown in both theoretical and applicable importance in the last decade, to the extent that this new tool is now sometimes employed without heed to its rigorous requirements. This is no more surprising than the way mathematical analysis was used historically. We hope this modest introduction to the theory and application of this new field may serve as a text at the beginning graduate level, much as certain standard texts in analysis do for the deterministic counterpart. No monograph is worthy of the name of a true textbook without exercises. We have compiled a collection of these, culled from our experiences in teaching such a course at Stanford University and the University of California at San Diego, respectively. We should like to hear from readers who can supply VI PREFACE more and better exercises.

As the story unravels, the team of crime reporters find themselves deeply involved in Aztec history, as a vengeful witch called Zyanya proves to be more than a match for them, leading to deadly consequences. Harrison is also in danger as he meets a descendant of Zyanya called Christina, who is a sadomasochist and performs strange sexual acts in order to prove her dominant personality.

Sylacauga—Alabama’s “Marble City”—is blessed with an abundant natural resource that nurtures both its economy and its cultural heritage. Thirty-five miles long, at least four hundred feet deep, and more than a mile wide, the Sylacauga Marble Belt yields crystalline white marble frequently compared to the Parian marble treasured by Greek sculptors and the Italian Carrara marble often chosen by Michelangelo. Artisans have quarried Sylacauga marble for tombstones since the early 1800s, and architects prized it for years as dimension stone for buildings like the United States Supreme Court. In the early 1900s, Giuseppe Moretti and Gutzon Borglum both chose this marble for magnificent sculptures. When granite, better able to withstand industrial pollution, overtook marble as the preferred architectural stone in the 1930s, Sylacauga’s quarry owners shifted their focus to the production of ground calcium carbonate (GCC), a fundamental ingredient in manufactured products from toothpaste, foodstuffs, and disposable diapers to paints, caulks, and sealants. Many cringe at the idea of blasting and grinding marble into fine powder, but GCC is a vital factor in the local economy. Thankfully, the Magic of Marble Festival, first held in 2009, has revitalized interest in the artistic value of Sylacauga marble, inspiring sculptors from across the United States and masters from Italy to apply their skills to cream-white blocks of this beautiful stone and share their creativity with thousands of residents and visitors each year. This is the story of quarry pioneers, investors, artists, and artisans. It's also the story of their families, who fondly remember their lives along the edge of “the hole” that provided for them.
